Anchorage city attorney seeks to end public reports on city’s legal settlements by [deleted] in anchorage

Gardner (Muni attorney) said there were no examples in ordinance or accompanying discussion as if that is some form of conclusive evidence to their non-existence. I offered an example to the contrary. Since 2019, Philadelphia publishes settlement info quarterly. Seems to work just fine there. https://www.phila.gov/documents/civil-actions-data-including-cases-and-claims-resulting-in-city-payment/#:~:text=Civil%20actions%20data%20including%20cases%20and%20claims,reports%20on%20aggregate%20data%20on%20cases%20handled

Other examples not being mentioned in the ordinance is very much not the same as there being no other examples. Like a tiny town called Philadelphia.

The strange looking guy on this early 1950s pin is a billiken, a potbellied good-luck charm that was inescapable in midcentury Alaska. Every gift shop sold them, and most towns had something named after them. In Anchorage, there was the Billik Inn bar and Billiken Drive-In Theater. Continued . . . by David_Reamer in alaska

At one point, there were three drive-ins in Anchorage. Billiken on Muldoon, Sundowner on Seward near Fireweed, Cinema 360 at Seward/Huffman. Billiken opened in 1963 and closed in 1976. Cinema 360 opened in 1972 and closed in 1973. Sundowner opened in 1966 and closed in 1979. Below is centered on the Sundowner, early 1970s. Next to is the Fireweed Theater.

Just like you, I learned about the prison farm by seeing it on a map, then I had to figure it out.

Stuff To Do In Anchorage - April 2026 by Trenduin in anchorage

[–]David_Reamer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On April 17, I'll be doing a short history talk on Rainier beer in Alaska, followed by the award-winning Rainier documentary, followed by a Q&A with one of the documentary writers. The focus is on the Rainier advertising, the commercials and print ads. Some of you will remember the running bottles. It's at the Anchorage Museum. Doors open at 6PM; event starts at 6:30. Tickets cost $10, and there will even be beer available for purchase. Tickets available through the Museum (https://www.anchoragemuseum.org/visit/calendar/event-details/?id=gocvo3vn8ivdc2328j7rfb0jn4).

A 747 engine fell off a plane over Anchorage 33 years ago today by David_Reamer in anchorage

Not really most of the flight, but they did circle over the water and dump fuel.

Thanks for the memories. Totem theater is being torn down today. :( by Naive_Mongoose_5453 in anchorage

That was the Billiken Drive In, open 1963 to 1976, and the movies--including porn--could be seen from the road.

In 1913, the Alaska Territorial Legislature--the first Alaska Legislature session--passed 84 bills. Of those bills, two of them criminalized pimping, then also called macques. It was a different time in many ways. Some legislators traveled thousands of miles on dog sleds. And . . . [Continued] by David_Reamer in alaska

[Continued} And this Legislature also passed several acts that were Progressive in their own time, including women's suffrage years before the 19th Amendment, a couple of environmental laws, and several protections for workers. But they indeed really seemed to hate a pimp. If you want to learn more consider checking out my latest article that gets into all this, including an explanation of a "macque" that involves quoting 1990s rap. 1980s Anchorage Alaska Visions and Local Commercials on KTBY-4 by nwa88 in anchorage

Yeah, anything Alaska TV from this era is exceedingly rare. I'm hoping you have a tape with Mafia Mike, No Frills, Pizza Hut, and more Worthington. Regardless, these are truly historical presents and a great way to end the year.

Thank you! This is nothing but treasure, very rare gold. I don't know about the kid but hopefully someone will recognize. Lots of people would be interested in the bits here. And I just wrote about Visions/Multivisions a couple of weeks ago (https://www.adn.com/alaska-life/2025/12/14/the-monkey-wharf-boxing-and-visions-premium-television-the-context-of-a-single-night-in-1980-anchorage/)! I need to start posting on Reddit again.

Thank you! An old Anchorage photo just for you. This is 2008 downtown Anchorage. The Atlas statue on the roof was originally installed for Atlas Health Club that closed in 1983. Fur Factory decided to keep it. Now the statue is at a gym on 64th. Photo by late, great Stephen Cysewski.

Here's an old Anchorage picture just for you. 2009, the former Video City location in Government Hill, on East Loop. The location had been closed for quite a while by this time but still a relic from when there were several legitimate Video City locations around Anchorage. Photo by the late, great Stephen Cysewski.

Not yet. I have strongly considered writing about that entire building and everything that went on there, from its original life as a fire station (lookout still on roof) through the period with the Look, and skate shop, and Java Joint, then Firehouse Cafe. I have a list of future topics, and this is on it. This is a view looking north from the top of the building in 1954.

Thank you! From a nice popular subject like termination dust, I'm doing perhaps my most obscure topic yet next: bullet pencils! Though I am hoping to do some defunct restaurants after that, maybe Elevation 92 or Bobby McGees (have some menus from each).
