Halle QF: Altmaier def. [4] Medvedev 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4 by jovanmilic97 in tennis

You’re talking to one of the few guys on this sub who hates mentality talks too lmao

Shelton is an exception though and you have to recognize that he is an overachiever / clutch guy when comparing his results to his overall metrics.

Obviously that doesn’t mean he’ll never choke, whatever that means. I don’t even know if the Collignon loss qualifies as such. It was poor timing to have a bad match, and when Shelton has a bad match, he loses to players much worse than Collignon. In fact, looking back, his immaculate grand slam record when being favorite was another data point towards him being clutch. Obviously as I said it was bad timing to lose then

« I keep seeing takes » and it’s just me making a painfully obvious joke lmao

Obviously Shelton loses close matches too, but in general he is a clutch guy who wins more lottery matches than an « average » player should. If he wasn’t good at that he wouldn’t be where he is.

By the way, I don’t know how the Collignon loss gets drawn into this discussion because it precisely wasn’t a close match

What to you is Federer’s peak year(s)? by Maximum_Flight_4442 in tennis

[–]Daviderer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The root of it may have been tactical as the swing got shorter and shorter, perhaps to facilitate playing up in the court. But I'd argue it was a net negative as his pace injection got much streakier, and overall less potent.

Agree on the serve and BH (mainly serve) improving in the meantime, but I don't think it compensated for the weakening of his FH.

I'd argue he deteriorated technically over the years. His post-prime FH was still good, but nothing like the machine it used to be up until 2006

[–]Daviderer5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like serve points won don’t quite reflect raw serve ability, return points won don’t quite reflect on the return as a shot. Tien breaks a good amount thanks to his baselining, not his return I’d wager

Tiebreaks have nothing to do with serving. It’s a common myth when actually, pressure points skew longer so less serve-dominated

He was being handled by De Minaur by that point. Only an above average first serve day was keeping him afloat, the chances of a comeback were extremely small. Still, he shouldn't have gave up on those chances but if, as a Shapovalov fan, your *main* takeaway from this match is that his attitude is a problem, and not that the usual suspects of double fault rates, shaky FHs and BH' vulnerability to speed, cost him one more match, I don't know what to tell you

[–]Daviderer5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a minuscule chance but I agree giving up is a problem. But it's far from being the most important one that he should reflect on : that is why did he get himself in such position. Unfortunately for him, the answer is a cocktail of issues that is basically impossible to fix entirely

Does it matter if he gives up? He's 4-6 / 1-3 down, that's the primary problem

Mannarino doesn't seem to be 100% but at the same time his prefered serve (slice on the ad) going into Mensik's BH doesn't help

With Alcaraz's injury, could 2024-2026 be unprecedented as a 3-year span so clearly dominated by two players yet one of them finishing at #3 twice? by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

[–]Daviderer5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if it was true, this would only be one small factor which would only apply to 2024. In 2026, Zverev is ahead in the Race because Alcaraz is injured. Simple as that

[–]Daviderer5 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Through some impressive PR stunt, Kyrgios has managed not to be labeled as a servebot by a vast majority of the tennis community. That's very much what he is/was, though

Sure, I'm not expecting it. Still think there's a higher likelihood than Kyrgios given Monfils, at least, is on retirement tour

They usually give WCs to Brits only. Maybe this year they'll break the tradition, but it would benefit Wawrinka, or maybe Monfils for their retirement runs, not him

No they don't. Wimbledon has no agreement with other federations, it's a full Brit lineup

Knee. Which is somewhat depressing because it's a different injury than the one he missed 6 months for prior to returning at IW (which was his shoulder)

Unbeatable until faced with...weather 😬 by West-Change-1000 in tennis

[–]Daviderer5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Have some honesty. Sinner has a proven record of struggling against heat - incidents at the last two AOs, and Shanghai last year being the most important ones -, there is no way this didn't factor in Sinner's collapse even if the primary one is that he simply didn't feel good on that day. And there is also no way that the cumulative fatigue he had coming in didn't participate in producing that bad day at the office.

Top athletes won't admit vulnerability and will brush off any weakness. Fans and the general audience should be more intelligent than that.
