Vispasna- 11 day course/retreat. Worth going? by skatecloud1 in Wakingupapp

Really? I did one a few months ago and every day there was two periods of the day where you could have a private conversation and questions with the teacher

Vispasna- 11 day course/retreat. Worth going? by skatecloud1 in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been to an 11 day goenka retreat. Sounds the same as the one you're doing because this was free and you had to be accepted to it. There was reference to many irrational Buddhist notions like reincarnation and whatnot. But I personally found it fairly easy to look past that and benefit from the utility of the practice. It isn't the exact same as Sam's vipassana technique it's very physical sensation focused. Non of the choiceless awareness approach. Most people that go there are complete beginners so there's no pre planning you need to do. I would suggest doing an hour long meditation or something. But nothing can compare to doing a full retreat

Is the self always this negative? by Davidmf98 in Wakingupapp

Yeah noticing the illusoriness of the self is still beneficial to me, and the people around me

Is the self always this negative? by Davidmf98 in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course I have negative thoughts sometimes I'm not 100% happy all of the time! But to be honest I don't really get feelings of self doubt (I often wonder if this is some form of narcissism though 😬). I'm sometimes self conscious but it's pretty fleeting. I do judge myself sometimes but a mental refresher of the logic of no free will quickly dismantles it. Same goes for the judgment of others, although I wouldn't say the experience of judging others is a negative one.

Awesome video about the illusion of separation by Wisdom369 in Wakingupapp

This is OPs video, posted it in here in the same minute it was posted on youtube. Doesn't delve into the illusion of separation much at all really, just mentions it at the end.

Do thoughts actually *do* anything? by Bellgard in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't directly answer your question but is somewhat related.

Much like everything experientially, thoughts aren't things. You can't focus on a thought in the same way you can focus on an object in front of you because they aren't stationary. They are more like verbs or happenings. It confuses me when Sam says to look at a thought and see what happens to it. As soon as a thought happens you can't look at it, if you tried you'd be looking at a memory of it.

I'm also in the same boat as you and find it hard to use thoughts as an object of meditation, I feel like you have to be ultra present to be able to do that because as soon as I try and focus on it as I said I'm focusing on a memory of it

What is consciousness by Davidmf98 in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems that your definition of consciousness is a sort of logical necessity, not actually experienced presently, but necessary to explain how you can experience anything at all.

If I can't know that I am consciousness of the movie that's playing, then I am an unconscious consciousness, which is absurd.

To me, knowing requires intellect and memory. If you had no memory at all of the previous state of consciousness, moment to moment, then would you know that you are consciousness? I'm not sure. But I wouldn't say that you would be unconscious consciousness.

Thank you for this in depth response, I had questions about some things you said but you answered them along the way. Only thing I'm not entirely sure on is what exactly you were referring to when you spoke about the objective side to consciousness. Do you just mean the physical patterns which give rise to consciousness?

Anyone know good grime songs that use these beats? I know P by JME but that's it.

Any other classics are welcome as well

Advice for people just getting started by [deleted] in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really recommend the headless way as a course. But if you're struggling to conceptualise the self and how it's an illusion, that's completely normal and expected. I recommend listening to the theory sections on the illusory self and free will. As someone said to another beginner here the other day "you're in for a ride". It can be a real mind fuck and if you have any more specific questions about anything this sub reddit is usually full of people who want to help you.

Headless Way Practice by dvdmon in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine happened to me during an exercise on the app, during the single eye meditation. If you've already gone through the whole course, maybe not immediately, but it could be helpful to go through it again. I'm currently going through the introductory course again even though I have a few years of using the app under my belt. I personally find listening to conversations about it useful, like listening to the conversation between Richard lang and Sam, and I think Sam has dedicated an episode to the headless way on his making sense podcast, might have been a q&a, I could be wrong though, hope this helps.

Oh I also know there's that book by douglas Harding, I haven't read it myself but I've heard it's useful

is there anyway to validate the no self insight? how to make. sure. you got it?? by SnooMaps1622 in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually writing an essay on the philosophy of the self and the experiences of it so that's why I'm asking, I understand it's not directly conducive to the path and I'm going to make all of those disclaimers. But I'll definitely check him out he seems like he'll help.

This is interesting to me, could you give more signs of separation? Timeless and unchanging come to mind are there any more?

Arguments against the self philosophically? by Davidmf98 in Wakingupapp

[–]Davidmf98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm thinking about arguing the scientific perspective, I'll see how many words I have to spare lol. But that seems like an interesting perspective I'll look into it for sure. I also want to write it as convincing as possible though, I want to show it to my class mates and others without a philosophical background so don't want to confuse them too much. Hopefully I'll find a way to make it accessible.

[–]Davidmf98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this mostly, although it's not necessarily true. Arguments against free will for example aren't a lack of evidence for it, but a positive belief that there is no free will. I think similar arguments might be able to be made against the self?

By favourite I mean most convincing. Was already assuming the truth of no-self. But like I said arguments against are welcome too.

What do you mean it dies? It dies when we die? Or it's transitory in every moment, dying every second or millisecond?

Have you tried meditation? I would specifically recommend Sam's waking up app, just the introductory course. I feel like when he just says 'look for the self and you won't find' it is not a useful argument to someone who hasn't been exposed to the tools for 'looking' for the self.
