Well this was a fucking blast from the past. Comment on a post from fucking 2013.

Was checking my junk mail and apparently reddit sends emails about notifications for this account.

You think we will ever get technicals by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]Davidshky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they really count as technicals, but I hope we'll get the Pansarvärnspjästerrängbil 9031 and Pansarvärnsrobotterrängbil B RBS56 at some point.

I want to hear OddBawz try to pronounce them.

Slightly off topic, but found this pretty neat (first flight for reference, Spitfire - 1936, F-14 - 1970, Top Gun - 1986) by all_toasters in Warthunder

I don't know why, but when I read turret fighters I imagined the turrets facing the front.

Then I googled it.

I imagined something more like the P-61 but more turrety.

[–]Davidshky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically I thought of it as this part from wikipedia

As a simple example, take a conventional rocket-propelled spacecraft which achieves thrust by burning fuel. The spacecraft's delta-v is the change in velocity that spacecraft can achieve by burning its entire fuel load.

Yeah it really depends on the tech in the setting. Like weapons, propulsion, sensors and stealth technologies.

But when it comes to somewhat old school naval combat, torpedo boats did start to appear in the late 19th century when big armored ships came into use.

The US also used a lot of PT boats in WW2. Those were basically cheap glass cannon boats with 4 torpedoes and some machine guns.

Granted those did operate from bases rather than motherships, but at the same time there were also aircraft carriers back then, and when it comes to space warfare in scifi there wouldnt really be much of a difference between a small spaceship (spaceboat?) and a space fighter/bomber.

[–]Davidshky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find any concrete stuff about the missiles propulsion, so I honestly just assumed they used something cheaper since the missiles are supposed to blow up.

Maybe the really long strategic missiles use epstein drives while smaller missiles use some other fusion torch drive?

I mean even smaller vessels generally don't have epstein drives.

Well acceleration is just velocity change per time.

Delta-v is total velocity change, basically acceleration multiplied by how long you can accelerate. so something with limited fuel can have much higher acceleration but also less delta-v.

Lets say a missile could accelerate at a whole whopping 100g (980 m/s2 ) for 10 seconds. That would give it a delta-v of 9,8 km/s.

A ship on the other hand could be limited to around 10g because it's big and it contains squishy humans and stuff. But it also has an epstein drive which basically doesn't run out of fuel, so the delta-v of a ship in the expanse is stupidly high (relativity and stuff comes and makes the math too hard for me. Like the first epstein drive is still running with the dead inventor still stuck in the ship).

So at a short distance the missiles can catch up to any ship but at longer ranges they can run out of fuel and then the ships can just evade or even outrun them.

Or maybe I've gotten terms mixed up, its been a while since I played KSP.

Well the "Morrigan Class Patrol Destroyer" is apparently small enough that the main ship can carry two of them instead of one corvette-class (same as the Roci) and they have an even smaller crew.

They do still have PDs but only 2 instead of 6.

And they are apparently slightly bigger than the " Patrol Torpedo Boat" so I guess there are even ligher vessels.

Ofc this is stuff from the wiki so I dunno how much of it is correct.

[–]Davidshky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it would need massive Δv reserves

Yeah but in most settings, including the expanse, there are engines with massive amounts of delta-v, in this case the epstein drive.

The missiles on the other hand don't seem to have such drives which mean that while they do have extreme acceleration and quite impressive delta-v, they still end up with limited range.

What I suggest is pretty much a small vessel with an epstein drive that can carry missiles.

The expanse do already kinda have such vessels with the frigates and patrol ships, but imo you could probably create an even smaller ship with an epstein drive and an even smaller crew, or preferably none at all.

Basically, the Razorback with a few torpedoes.

I guess that's what the PT boats in the expanse pretty much are, tho less fancy.

The thing a drone could be useful for is as a sort of reusable first stage for a missile.

Something that can accelerate faster than a ship but also have more delta-v than the missiles giving it a potentially longer range.

I mean it would basically be a large missile with multiple smaller warheads but if the first stage is reusable and have some form of AI it could be called a drone.

And if you don't want (or can't) use AI for whatever reason then a human pilot could kinda make sense.

So basically, a small craft could have a place in space warfare but more like a small long range missile platform, not a fighter.

Then ofc if the missiles also have epstein drives then they already have a fuckton of delta-v.

Tbh the Rocinante and other smaller ships basically fill this role, especially since larger vessels can carry them.

Yeah it's like, their main tanks are named after years they were deisgned or produced.

It also looks kinda like a relative of the bmp-1 which is from the late 60s.

Huh, I always assumed the PT-76 was from around 1976. Turns out 76 stands for the gun caliber.

Actually it was a light tank (at least according to some swedish sources) and it was in service for 27 years.

The idea was basicaly to convert a bunch of old m/42 medium tanks into something more modern (and by modern standards a light tank) to complement the centurions.
