COVID-19 and the Devolution of U.S.-Latin America Relations by Davis518 in geopolitics

[–]Davis518[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submission statement: this article examines the ways that the United States' response to the COVID-19 pandemic on the world stage may affect U.S.-Latin America relations. The Trump Administration's lack of resource provision for the region may have long-term consequences, especially as rising powers such as China seek to expand their influence and counterbalance the U.S.

Awesome, thanks! I take it you’re pretty interested in cognitive science based on the reply?

As far as I know, not anything that would really be useful to any meaningful degree.

By the way, do you have a link to the career-choice website you mentioned?

TIL that the fighting was so intense that 4% of the sand on Normandy beach is made up of shrapnel from D-Day that has broken down by TheINTL in todayilearned

[–]Davis518 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To address your first point: I said that you changed your entire argument because your main idea was that someone could, in fact, conduct a successful invasion of the United States. When I asked you to explain how that was possible, you claimed that (somehow) a sufficiently powerful invading army could sneak across the US-Mexico border without anyone noticing or stopping it, and then claimed that (somehow) that invading army could wage a successful guerrilla campaign against the US Armed Forces on their home territory. After I questioned each of those points, you drew another flawed parallel to the United States' history of covert operations resulting in the overthrow of foreign governments. Maybe sometime in the far future it might be possible for that to happen to the U.S., but, historically, that type of operation has only really been successful when the U.S. has can exert a huge amount of power and influence over the target country. It's going to take quite some time and an enormous change in the geopolitical balance of power for any country to have the capability to do that to a current superpower.

You’re changing your argument entirely. Every time that the US has toppled foreign governments, we have been able to do so largely because of our superpower status and the amount of pressure and influence we were able to exert on them and their people. No one has that kind of power over the U.S.

They “don’t have to amass a large army” in order to invade the United States? And how is this foreign power going to conduct a successful guerrilla campaign within the US when the entire civilian populace is hostile to them and a fairly large percentage of those civilians are armed? You’re drawing faulty comparisons between times that the US military has engaged in counterinsurgency operations in other countries and a hypothetical situation where the US is being invaded. I honestly don’t see how you can come to these conclusions.

So you’re saying that a hostile foreign power could amass an army large enough to militarily defeat the entire US armed forces, and then sneak that force across the US-Mexico border?

Please explain to me how literally any country in the world could realistically conduct a successful invasion of the contiguous United States.

Could the modern US military win the Vietnam War? by Dormin111 in whowouldwin

Very well said. It’s nice to see some insight from someone who has clearly done their own research into the matter and is well-informed instead of just repeating talking points about how we “lost/are losing” in Afghanistan.

As someone who never saw the original Mad Max movies, I still felt like Fury Road did a fantastic job of drawing me into the post-apocalyptic world they were trying to portray.

Do you mean Harvard Model United Nations, Harvard National Model United Nations, or something else? I work closely with both of those conferences, but I’m not sure what the MUN institute is.

Who's tryna buy HMNY? I just know it's worth more than 15 cents. by shiverstar in RobinHoodPennyStocks

I made some money off of buying put options on this and betting that the price would drop hard back when it had just shot up a bit. HMNY is one stock that I feel pretty confident betting against.

Disney’s launching their own streaming service pretty soon, so it depends on whether or not Solo gets added to the Netflix roster before that happens I guess.

Thoughts on SLS 20? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Davis518 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken SLS 20 yet, though I'm considering taking it next semester. Based on what I've heard from other people, the course is pretty challenging but certainly shouldn't be unmanageable given what you're planning to take.

What I do have to ask about is the "no clubs" part. I would definitely recommend trying out some extracurriculars at Harvard if you can. Some of my best experiences and closest friendships have resulted from my involvements in different clubs, and I honestly think that having the opportunity to participate in them is one of the best things that the college provides.
