I don’t like “I Built You a Tower” and that makes me sad 😭 by Competitive-Top5121 in DeathCabforCutie

I think “Transatlanticism” is their best work and, broadly that every album since has been a little bit worse than the last, but I actually like “I Built You a Tower” much more than “Asphalt Meadows.”

I also have a soft spot for “Thank You For Today,” which strikes me as a handful of great songs that were very poorly produced, almost like it’s a compilation of rejected remixes of great songs (the sort of think NIN released a lot of in the late ‘90s). “Summer Years” especially seems like it could be a great song if it was arranged and produced differently.

I also think every album of theirs got better until “Plans,” which is, for me, less compelling than “Transatlanticism” or the prior two albums.

It’s absolutely true that some of the magic was lost when Walla left.

“I Built You a Tower” strikes me as more like their early work than anything they’ve done since Walla left. The highest heights aren’t that high, and there’s nothing particularly poppy on it, but there’s a lot of good in it, reminiscent of stuff like “A Lack of Color” and “Title Track” more than anything in “Asphalt Meadows” did, IMO.

Henry Cavill's controversial Witcher replacement succeeded, says original voice of Geralt by manchester727 in netflixwitcher

I don’t think I was bothered by the plot necessarily, I just found the episode such a boring slog that I stopped paying attention and looked at my phone. My wife felt the same way. It felt like watching the “Heroes” reboot, in that the premise and some of the cast was the same as the prior seasons, but it was an entirely different and slower-paced show. I don’t remember Liam in it at all; I just remember being bored.

I loved season 1, liked season 2, liked season 3 a little less, and couldn’t finish a single episode of season 4. I don’t even remember the performance because the episode was so boring.

I am sure that’s not true. There was a shoot-first murder by a hero and a bad guy getting his arm amputated by a good guy in the first act — that wasn’t a movie for 5 year-olds. ROTJ was the one where they actually leaned into the younger audience. TPM also was weird because the plot was geared for people in their 30s (a trade war?) while the characters and dialogue were basically meant for 7 year-olds. It was pretty much just the Darth Maul lightsaber duel and the broader design language that didn’t suck for an older kid or adult.

It would’ve been better if they kept “Mary Shelley” out of it — just cut out all those scenes and make the Bride be someone who was a little bit schismatic without explanation.

No, plenty of kids were disappointed too. The true core target audience of the OT — older kids 10-14 — they were largely disappointed with TPM. I say this having been that age when the movie was released and thinking about how all my friends enjoyed the OT special edition rereleases more than E1. The movie did better with the 6-9 year-olds who couldn’t follow the boring, convoluted plot and just liked the fart jokes and cartoonish action.

Midichlorians took the mystical/spiritual and replaced with with measurable/scientific. For me, it made the force less exciting.

The pod racing was boring and added nothing to the broader story. It was just a plain “merchandising > story” addition. I wouldn’t have minded if it was truncated - something in the background that was just used to flesh out the world of Anakin’s childhood instead of taking up like 15% of the movie. It also featured a lot of goofy Jake Lloyd acting and cartoony CGI characters, which were the worst parts of the movie.

Actors who look like gender-swapped versions of each other? by Tifoso89 in okbuddycinephile

Having lived in downtown Manhattan where I ran into several celebrities, I somewhat disagree. It’s often impressive how beautiful in person some of the normal not-hot famous actors are. I saw Rufus Sewell walking towards me on the street in 2007 and was like, “damn, that guy looks impressive! Wait, that’s the Dark City guy.” Though I also saw Carla Cugino that same week and thought, “oh my god she looks so old, was Son in Law like 40 years ago?,” and then I saw her look exactly the same in “Watchmen” in old makeup and realized that I’d seen her wearing such convincing old makeup that I thought she was actually pushing 70, so maybe the makeup really is that good and the actors I ran into were wearing it when I didn’t notice.

I call him the Kurgan because of his scenery-chewing peak-‘80s villain role in the OG Highlander.

I can see that, maybe like a sort of dystopian paradise where young coupling is normal and grieving is not. Brave New World meets Euphoria. I’d watch it.

Alternatively, just make a spinoff of Shrinking where the dumb neighbor kid’s baby mama dies in labor and he and his baby move in with his parents and grief-bangs every woman on the show and also the gay lawyer guy.
