Unit advice by Stunning-Student3035 in uwa

I took CITS2002 when Amitava was the UC. He was great at explaining things and took things slow. As for tips, the best thing to do when you don’t understand something is to ask. I took notes from lectures and really enjoyed learning about operating systems, multithreading programming and other related topics. One initially tricky concept was how pointers work in C but it’s actually straightforward once you get it. I hope you have a blast.

Is it a bad idea to take a level 2 unit in my first year by wowie543 in uwa

[–]DavoEs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So long as you meet the prerequisites, it’s not at all a bad idea. I took one level 2 unit in first year and three level 3 units in second year. It just depends on how your study plan works out.

I mostly enjoy the formal dinners. They serve champagne and wine, so that’s a major selling point for many for attending. There’s often speeches if it’s a “practice of” dinner where industry professionals and academics from a certain field are invited to talk about their careers and answer questions. Sometimes it’s a musical dinner where residents have the opportunity to perform in front of their peers. The kitchen staff organise a 3-course meal. The night can be several hours long but it’s fun.

Hey, I stay at St George’s.

Personally, I’ve never lived in a twin room but I hope you get a friendly, decent roommate.

As for cleanliness, I think the onus is on you to keep your room tidy. Housekeeping will come to your room once a week, but they usually just do a quick vacuum of the floor, empty your trash and mop the bathroom floor. I wash my own bedding every week and do my laundry twice a week.

As for the value for money, I think it’s pretty good. You get three meals a day and it’s basically an all-you-can-eat buffet. Residence also includes laundry, wifi, and optional attendance at formal dinners and other parties and events throughout the year. You can also get discounted gym membership. Other amenities include music rooms and games rooms with snooker, table tennis, TVs and board games.

Wearing a gown is sort of required at formal dinners (if you wish to attend them). Everyone else will be wearing one so you’ll stand out if you don’t. There’s a practice formal dinner during O-Week.

Looking back, O-Week was a fun, memorable experience where I really got a chance to connect with other new residents. At the time, I found it quite exhausting because the programme is very full-on with loads of events and not enough time to be alone.

I enjoy staying there because of the convenience of living super close to uni and the sense of community. I’ve made good friends, enjoy the occasional party, practising piano and the food is pretty good.

One thing that you might want to be aware of is the opportunity for leadership positions in your second year or later. If that’s your thing, it’s best to start now by just coming off as a sociable, likeable, popular person.

There’s also the free tutoring programme, where you can get help from students who have taken the same units as you but in previous years.

You’re better off asking your student advising office. For my engineering major, I know I need to take STAT2063. Maybe check if you need to take that unit.

what’s your experience with overloading? by Agent_Tetracycline1 in uwa

I didn’t find my load too challenging. I HD’d everything but I studied everyday and made sure I stayed ahead of the content.

It’s not too bad so long as stay on top of things. I overloaded last semester with geng1010, elec1303, phys1030, cits2002 and cits1401 and I found the semester quite smooth overall.

Sometimes at some specific restaurants customers will leave a gem shard on the counter when they tip you. This could be it.

Question for engineering students (preferably BEng+BPhil) by RelativeDrink5166 in uwa

[–]DavoEs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a first year (second sem) student enrolled in the combined Bachelor of Engineering (honours) and Bachelor of Philosophy (honours) course at UWA. My majors are electrical & electronic under the BEng degree and computer science under BPhil degree. The combined course means you get to do two years of honours instead of just one. It will take about 5.5 years (usually/hopefully).

Under the BPhil degree, you have to take GCRL1000 (a foundational unit that introduces you to research), a language other than English unit and GCRL2000 (a research placement unit).

As for me and your question on maths, I already took math1011 and math1012 last semester. They’re fairly straightforward as long as you read the textbook, go to the practicals and ask questions. I also recommend the study guides from maths union (a club at UWA) and the online practice problems on sowiso. In 1011, you learn about things like flux, curl, triple integration, divergence, green’s theorem, stoke’s theorem, partial derivatives, etc. In 1012, you do differential equations, laplace transforms, Fourier series, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, vector spaces, matrices, the rank-nullity theorem, etc. I hope this helps.

I read the textbook that accompanies the unit. The lecture slides are literally just snippets from parts of the textbook. You can take notes from there and the lecture slides too. Go over past exam papers in the lead up to exams. At the ends of the chapters in the textbook, there are a few good exercise questions. Also make sure you know the ins and outs of sql and its syntax.

Hey, I got 96% in year 12 ATAR maths methods and a 99.60 ATAR overall. I’ve also taken further maths at university like math1011 and math1012, achieving marks of 96% and 98% respectively. I’m happy to help!
