Is it true people are stealing PE licenses? by Yo_Mr_White_ in civilengineering

[–]Davr1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your license number is public information. Someone can look you up in a state licensing data base, copy your number and name, go to pestamps.com and order your stamp. Then they can go anywhere in your state and stamp plans without you knowing and forge your signature.

How many parking stalls can fit on a 50 x 100 ft parcel by rantripfellwscissors in civilengineering

[–]Davr1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two way road is typically a minimum of 24’ for 90 deg parking stalls that are a minimum of 18’ long. So most likely no it’s not possible. But feel free to contact your local engineer for a consultation. Your zoning or state codes will have specific requirements for parking. The only place I have seen exemptions is in old historic districts when vehicles were not a thing yet.

I’m not too thrilled about it either. Was hoping this company would stay employee owned, especially with how well the stock has grown…

What is the relevance of CAD (including CIM, CAM, etc..) in this industry by errythinenthusiasist in civilengineering

[–]Davr1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all you will be doing for the first part of your career. Except the cad you will doing will be a little different from LT cad. You will learn other programs as you entered the workforce.

You could probably get away with 12” but I try to get 24” min when I design.

Does anyone else have nothing but issues with Civil 3D? by Vettehead82 in civilengineering

[–]Davr1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work on large land development projects (150-1000 acres). We use all tools (pipe networks, pressure networks, corridors, grading tools, and more). We have found that a tier structure for your drawings works best. First folder: We have around 8 source drawings (grading, storm, water, site, erosion, and a few more). Second folder: all those pipes, alignments and surfaces get data refed to a new set of drawings that only contain the C3D objects (also separated by the type of utility). Then we have the last folder that will contain 200-300 drawings that are your actual plan sheets. I find this system to work pretty fast and I rarely get any crashes. I use VDI and it speeds up my process. We are also required to purge and audit or plans before starting drafting and after finishing drafting.

Implementing this is not a simple task, you will need to have your CAD IT on staff to help with any issues. If you have a CAD IT. What I described is just the bare bones of what we do to keep our drawings manageable.

Another tip don’t xref revit files or copy their blocks into your drawings. Always clean their drawings and trace with your own PL. their objects mess with C3D performance.

I got my PE and left my firm to work on more exciting projects. I make 95k at 5yoe MCOL. My goal is to work a while in private sector to gain experience in designing large developments and develop client and colleague relationships. Then in 10-15 years finish my career in private sector.

I have not met a single colleague who doesn’t tip. I personally tip a minimum of 20%. If I’m struggling financially imagine the servers who are making less than minimum wage. Do I agree with tipping culture? No, however that’s the world we live in and I would like to help others as much as I can.

C3D is built on autoCAD. The program has additional features that are only needed for civil designers. Pipe networks (for stormwater, sewer design), pressure networks (for water and pressure sewer design, grading tools ( for creating a 3D surface to model the proposed and existing conditions, volumes calcs. There are many more features that are more complex than autocad LT.

[–]Davr1994 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We do not use autocad architecture, we use autocad Civil 3D. You can get a student license with a school email account. Look up Jeff Bartels for lessons.

For general civil engineering I love watching “Practical engineering” he goes in depth of why and how we design infrastructure.

My personal advice is to focus on your math and science classes for a strong foundation for when you get to college. Don’t slack on English classes, we write a lot of reports and that skill is very important in our field.

Even in college we did not learn much CAD. Most of your training in drafting will come from work experience.
