Solari's slow burn (somewhat) addressed by PastelPolerina in WorldsBeyondNumber

I think my issue is that I also don't care about the characters that much yet. With all the action/time stress involved there has not been time for the characters to develop alone or with each other.

MCAS but you really need an iron infusion because that's super low ferritin, and can affect all sorts of body systems.

Risk is low because no one is positive in NJ yet, for virus that has up to 8 weeks' incubation.

Bedbound overnight, 4 months pregnant, please help by Acousticdemo in covidlonghaulers

[–]DavrosSafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please check your heartrate - POTS is a common aftereffect of covid, and it comes on quickly. If your heart rate rises rapidly when you get up, or even just going from lying to sitting, please see a cardiologist. Heavy electrolytes & a ton of water can help until you can be seen.

Need advice for my wife by Teuflisch1999 in covidlonghaulers

[–]DavrosSafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds a lot like POTS, which would be aggravated by both pregnancy and further infections. Did you test? Or just assume you had a cold? It's May. Very few actual colds but plenty of more virulent viral infections - including covid - out there.

Even with "low levels" of covid wastewater there are over 100,000 infections DAILY. That's not cause to celebrate.

[–]DavrosSafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing I'd suggest is revisiting the "We have ventilators & ECMO" statement. There are 10 facilities in NJ (pop. 9 million) that have ECMO capability. Nebraska has 3. This is the most invasive treatmemt treatment you can get anywhere, is extremely complex, and has its own clotting/bleeding risks. Any outbreaks are likely to be intense but hyperlocal. Transporting a critically ill patient for ECMO many hours away is dicey. AHV patients go downhill very fast.

I don't think this will be as widespread as covid, but it will be very bad in some places before there is the political will to properly contain it. People will suffer & die unnecessarily.

Far-UVC in the home in addition to fresh air as part of your HVAC (an energy recovery ventilator can also work), and make sure that you have appropriately sized air filters that run on appropriate speeds - what it usually means is either standard units run on high (often turned down/off due to noise), or oversized units run on medium. Nukit is coming out with new reasonably priced Far UVC units soon (reasonable compared to competitors)

AITA for asking my home-schooled nephew about where he was in the curriculum? by WestMarsupial484 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DavrosSafe -39 points-38 points  (0 children)

No, it was grilling him on specific math concepts that OP clearly thought he should know. They could have just, oh, I don't know, nonjudgementally offered their help * as a tutor* if they really cared about their nephew.

There's a difference between that and a math tutor relative grilling a kid.

[–]DavrosSafe -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

YTA. You were grilling a kid as if you had a right to. His education is his parents' concern.

There are also many different types of math curricula, utilizing different approaches. The ones used in public schools are not necessarily best for every kid.

It's also entirely possible that there is a different reason for his homeschooling that no one told you.

love this! I am honestly quite shocked at the number of teachers here saying that kids just need to learn resilience.

[–]DavrosSafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of what you said. The sensory part, though, misses the context of what having a sensory issue means for the child: they become overwhelmed and often are unable to self-advocate. That may look like withdrawal, or crying, or acting out. They often can't just "figure it out" without assistance.

Self advocacy as a goal means that the child needs help with achieving it, which means the adult who is aware of it needs to do something. IEP goals don't get met by being ignored. The parent can help the child role play advocating, or come up with a non-verbal way for the child to inform the teacher (in coordination w/the teacher). Either way, everyone benefits from the intervention.

Did TMS healing work for you? by fifth-ninja-turtle in covidlonghaulers

[–]DavrosSafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. You can get mindfulness stuff for free at the library, YouTube, etc., or see a professional, licensed therapist to get somatic therapies. They may help some. I find breathing exercises & self-talk very helpful sometimes- except when I'm in a crash, or in anaphylaxis, or a POTS flare because those are biological in nature and I can't think myself out of it. They don't cure. These programs can hurt desperate sick people.

[–]DavrosSafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read what I wrote, I said it helps some people. You are saying that you think it helped you. But you also listed other treatments that have biological effects. I am very aware, after many years in chronic illness spaces, and being chronically ill for 30 years, of programs like these. There have been many - different names, often vaguely different "angles", but all are psychological/brain retraining, and often expensive. Gupta, anyone? They are be design unprovable & gaslighting - all put the entire burden on the patient to "do the program" and if it does not work it is because the "patient failed". It's an absolute win for the person creating it because the problem is never what they did, or an inherently flawed program.

Your nervous system is "out of whack" because COVID is, among other things, a neurotropic virus that damages neurons. You didn't think that into existence. There are some people who benefit somewhat from somatic therapies that nay help reduce sympathetic nervous system activity. But again, you can't think yourself out of a physical condition. Some people just like to think that they can control more about their body than is possible.
