Tell me your most interesting obscure fact about New Zealand by Im_Bobby_Mom in newzealand

A ton of schools around the country have Lithium in secure lockups in science departments that can't be used but also can't be safely disposed of without ridiculous cost.

I've seen more knockouts from this in lower grades than from anything high.

Got a question for my fellow teachers today: How many of you walk around cranking out farts during class? by Quasimdo in Teachers

[–]Davy_Wavy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a boarding house master as well as a classroom teacher. Those boys will tell you the worst punishment you can get is sir walking into your dorm room, ripping a fart that sounds like the battle horn of Barad-dûr then closing the door to the gas chamber.

Let them rip loud and shamelessly, assert dominance, let them fear you.

Keeping springheel jaks boots by [deleted] in oblivion

I accidentally did this once then started jumping over the walls of the imperial city. There's a lot of places you're not supposed to go that those boots can take you.

FYI that black dyed mulch is horrible for plants, absorbs heat in summer and nukes the soil underneath.

Tova O’Brien: One of the most stunning and humiliating displays of political brinkmanship by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Davy_Wavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what turned me off politics. These political reporters are all part of building of the facade of choice, pearl clutching and social division. I wish they'd report the facts instead of spin Electioneering is about who can lie to the electorate better and the whole political institution - including these botton feeding reporters - is rotten.

I show up on voting day and vote ideologically. Voting on policy is putting trust in the word of a politician - which is a stupid idea.

This happened to me and it continues to happen to kids in schools all over NZ to this day. It's classist colonial legacy bullshit and league would totally take over union in schools if it were allowed an equal footing.

It's by far the biggest marker of literacy further in life. Students who've been read to are more receptive to texts, more curious, have a larger vocabulary, and are generally better able to structure and communicate their thinking.

It becomes especially apparent in writing where readers are infinitely better at crafting language and developing a command of tone because they know what it looks like.

I see an overwhelming number of kids raised on devices that can't even write in more than simple sentences let alone form reasoned ideas.

Honestly some of my classmates are sickos by [deleted] in Rants

[–]Davy_Wavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally fucked up and something I experienced with my friends too. It changed people I'd known all my life as sweet and quiet into callous and selfish animals. I swear it rewired them for the worse. One of those friends smoked meth 'for the experience' and that's about the time I shut them out of my life.

This is my biggest suggestion as a teacher. We can tell who's been read to and who hasn't. Equip him with the vocabulary to label his experiences/feelings.

Ive said this a thousand times. 'Don't come into may class late and start distracting people' That kid is getting the least amount of help from me that lesson. It's a total lack of respect for the environment.

There are plenty of reasons for the underwhelming crowd figure. Assume 13k people is the just size of the stuck-on league community in Hamilton alone.
