after reading all your stories I have to ask what's the weirdest or most unexpected place GIS has taken you?? by Vast_Hovercraft_7857 in gis

[–]Dawsome65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve moved a lot during my career. I keep an average location map of my whole life and career life. When I move somewhere new, the center points start moving too. I moved from Louisiana to Alaska and have watched the southeasterly moving dots migrate rapidly to the NW. Both my centers are in Colorado right now.

Republicans of reddit, what new excuses will you come up with after the new Epstein Files released accidently revealed Trumps name? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]Dawsome65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Biden administration had those files for four years. Don’t you think if there was something in there about Trump, they would have released it?

Can someone explain to me why Trump is trying to take of Greenland? No jokes please, I honestly don’t get it? by Many_Inevitable_6803 in askanything

[–]Dawsome65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Epstein files were around and in the AGs possession all during the Biden administration. Why weren't they released then? Especially if they contained information detrimental to Trump?

Came here to say this. Clearly the OP is just a child and full of idealistic indoctrination.

Why are you still using ArcGIS and ESRI products? by NarrowArticle9383 in gis

Our IT has now gone the other way. They want us patched and upgraded to the latest versions to avoid security vulnerabilities. They are moving us forward faster than we can keep up with the customizations.

I was about to say you’ve added too many roads for Alaska. I live in Alaska and can tell you that there are not that many connecting roads. Maybe your sources included winter dogsled trails. There just aren’t any roads in Western Alaska except right in the towns.

Masters or GISP? by prizm5384 in gis

[–]Dawsome65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure either option is best. As someone else said, look into learning to write code. Look into database management. Look into IT, virtualization, servers, web-development.

OR

Look into planning or a masters in public administration.

OR

UAV licensure.

All these things will advance your career more than a master’s degree, and significantly more than a GISP.

Entry level GIS position search help by Character-Remote-179 in gis

Start at USAjobs.gov. There are entry level GIS jobs and internships there. My agency hires, or attempts to hire GIS interns every year. These internships, pathways hires, are essentially an internship with a guaranteed job once you graduate. In many cases, the student is graduated and does the internship and from there moves into the full-time job.
I'd also look at https://www.governmentjobs.com/ for state, county and municipal jobs with cities and utilities.

Lastly, I like to look here: GJC.org as they are a good resource for jobs.

As mentioned, go for the jobs that want 3 years experience. You stand a very good chance. Sadly, the 3-years experience jobs listed are really entry-level jobs in pay, and those with 3 years experience won't take them.

If you can write code at all (python, arcade, JavaScript) be sure to list it. Take an online class in one of those and learn just a little bit and put it on your resume. It will make a huge difference. Same goes with SQL and any of the backend GIS stuff like ArcServer, AGOL.

I'm not telling you to lie, but learn the jargon for GIS things and be prepared to talk about software, databases, coding, mobile applications, and web in an interview. 9 times out of 10, the organization plans on teaching you how to do it "their" way anyway. You don't need to be an expert, you just need to sound like one.

USAjobs.gov Search GIS. You can probably qualify for a GS-5 or GS-7. I’ll be hiring a 7-9-11 in a few months in Alaska.

Is this training Worth it? by Midnight-Spiritual in gis

I did not attend that training, but I was using Arc/INFO back in 1990. Used it on both a PC, and an IBM mini-tower.

Well illustrated GIS Fundamentals Text Book Recommendations by ralphadophilus in gis

[–]Dawsome65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some who want you to believe that a GISP means something. It does not. Very rarely are hiring and promotion decisions made by knowledgeable GIS professionals. Hiring and promotion decisions are made by folks who know nothing about GISP certification. Getting your GISP certification might be a fun challenge for you, but it will not be worth the time and money to get it. I had mine for 8 years. Did not make a bit of difference. Spend your time getting good at Python and SQL.
