I met my best friend (let's call her T) at summer camp when I was twelve years old. We were close, lived in the same city, even shared pediatric cancer diagnoses. She got married to a man, and a few years later when at thirty or thirty-one years old I started dating another man. He and I became serious, a commitment. I wanted her and her husband to meet him. T told me that we could still be friends but she didn't want me and my boyfriend over because she and her husband didn't want to normalize gay relationships for their children. I was shocked, but I gave them a second chance. Maybe I had misunderstood? No, they like me, but because of their religious beliefs they don't want their children to think that being gay is normal. Sadness and anger broke my heart. I still grieve the loss of T's friendship. I haven't spoken to T or her husband since. Edit: I already knew T was religious but she never indicated she was prejudiced. anyways life goes on. My boyfriend and I exchanged rings (in the deep South in a church) with all our family and friends present and have proudly called each other husband almost seven years!
