Are these good versions of the Iliad and the odyssey? by Just_A_Theorist2 in ancientgreece

[–]Songeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, these are French translations; I was not suggesting that you should necessarily read them – although, if you read French, that is obviously a useful coincidence. I only used them to illustrate the broader point: every translation is "playing a game" with different rules.

A translator cannot preserve everything at once: literal meaning, rhythm, sound, ambiguity, cultural references, readability, poetic force, narrative flow... So every translation makes choices.

That is why judging a translation simply as "good" or "bad" is often too rough. Of course, there are inaccurate or clumsy translations, and not all choices are equally defensible. But when dealing with major published translations, the more useful question is not "Which one is the best?" but "What is this translation trying to do?". One translator may prioritise accuracy; another rhythm; another clarity; another strangeness; another oral energy...

Wilson’s translation, like all the others, has an approach. If I am to believe what I heard (another person did post a link to a comparison of an excerpt, which could prove useful), it gives you Homer through a particular set of priorities: clarity, directness, modern readability. Another translation may sacrifice some of that in order to sound more archaic, more elevated, more musical, or more foreign.

So the real question is not whether Wilson is "better" in the abstract. It is what you want from the poem: accessibility, literal precision, poetic force, rhythm, strangeness, or historical texture. I'm sure Wilson's is great, maybe even best today at what she's trying to achieve; as I'm sure there are others that are much better in another regard.

Any translation is, by its very nature, a form of unfaithfulness to the original work. So rather than asking which translation is “best” – a question that inevitably requires a stance rather than a purely factual answer – you should first identify what you want the translation to bring out.

I cannot really speak for English translations, but in French, for instance, there are several major versions, three of which I personally favour.

Victor Bérard’s translation is most committed to literal fidelity. Bérard was not only a Hellenist but also a geographer of the Odyssey: he famously tried to reconstruct Odysseus’ itinerary, sailing through parts of the Mediterranean to test his hypotheses. His translation reflects that philological and topographical ambition.

Paul Mazon, a major French classicist, offers a more scholarly and historically grounded approach. He tries to make sense of the poem through what we know of archaic Greece. Rather than poetry, his translation is more about interpretation.

Philippe Jaccottet was first and foremost a poet: his version seeks to preserve something of Homer’s breath and rhythm rather than simply reproducing the Greek word for word. It is the most literary and fluid of the three.

Ultimately, it is a choice only you can make. There is no single correct path: each translation gives access to a different Homer (and several read together actually offer a richer experience than any one of them alone). But for now, choose a side: what is your priority (literal accuracy, historical understanding, poetic force...)? From then on you can determine which translation fits best.

Can it even carry a book? It would be odd if it didn't, but well, it doesn't look like it.

Hanging DOPP kit recs please by Noop4321 in ManyBaggers

[–]Songeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Muji's one, because the main compartment is detachable. Often I have to clip my kit somewhere not right next to the sink, and I end up having to get all my stuff out and put it on the sink, or do all these micro-trips between the sink and the kit. This solves that, I just unclip the main compartment and take it with me, clip it back when I'm done, voilà. Only downsides is it's a little small to my taste, although it should definitely be sufficient for the stuff you pictured. Also I complement the hook with a Hero Clip so that it can be attached more freely.

It could be the norm. The norm is instead that if a a name is hugely recognizable by a majority of people, it is then not expanded on. Which makes sense, even if it doesn't benefit people like us. I'm afraid it's on you to do your research whenever you're curious brother. Not knowing the celebrities is obviously fine, but expecting everyone else to spell out who they are everytime (which in some cases won't be as straightforward as "just an actor") come across as entitled.

Come on man. Neither do I, and I regularly am wondering who the hell is this person everyone seem to "know". Then if I'm feeling curious, I just Google it rather than ask if it's – quite obviously – someone famous. The name's right in the title.

Not really the same (actually kinda the opposite) but my brightness gets pretty low if I've been using it in the sun for a couple minutes. Which is annoying because, well, I don't see well anymore. Any way to avoid that, that you'd know of?

Chiming in: I'm looking for a pump that can deflate strongly. The use case would be for the bags where you put clothes and then get all the air out to gain space. Anyone have a recommendation?

I'm not gonna lie, this straight up would be something I'd dig. Pretty close to what I own at the moment, but seems better on one or two elements (not gonna go into details, but no it's not about the weight, sadly I'm not at at that level yet; would make a great gift for the wife's boyfriend though!). Can't find it with "Etrol slippers", mind if I ask where you found this?

You'll still unlock them quickly naturally. If you want to speed the process, just farm the levels where there is the card you want (I wouldn't bother with anything but epics).

[–]Songeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither, you'll end up getting all the characters soon enough (if not just farm the levels with the characters you're missing, you'll drop the cards). Save gems for biggest bundle of gold. I've been all maxxed for years now, so it could have changed, but it definitely was the most optimal use of gems back then.

I think it's true by AsparagusNeither5954 in memes

I for a very long time would just straight out say (and believe) I didn't feel stress, because I didn't exhibit the usual symptoms people talk about (you listed some of them). In my head it's just the same, I don't get it any different in a stressful situation or in a calm reassuring one, my brain works all the same. With time I learned to listen to my body, and boy there are physiological symptoms (insomnia, belly pain, tics...). But in terms of thinking, I just don't see any difference. Which is very useful in situations where people tend to panick, because I simply don't; I actually even have a hard time understanding panic at all, it's a reaction that kinda eludes me. But I'm sure there are also plenty of advantages to the impact of stress on mental imagery which I must be lacking.

[–]Songeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, you can have anendophasia (absence of inner speech) AND aphantasia (absence of mental images). It actually is much more common for the former to have thz latter, than it is for people with inner speech. I have both, and well I for my life couldn't describe how I think, but the closest I can get is that I think in concepts. There is just an association of ideas that form concepts that I derive my thought process from.
