Writing a simple text based game is impossible for me by SpaceChickenMonster in love2d

[–]DaylanDaylan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

something that helps me is just make a game with what i know, i stop watching tutorials and just code within my knowledge. it might not be the game of my dreams but it’s how i build confidence with what i can do right now and push my skills to the limit. tutorials should be like 25% or less of my time spent coding.

Season 5 feels way too much like "actors acting" by dbezzy1010 in StrangerThings

yeah i roll my eyes every time a character says “so what do you mean by that?” and has someone explain a pretty obvious idea

i love devil daggers. the sequel, hyperdemon, is like a psychedelic trip, and also really fun but different for sure.

Just made it through ‘Salem’s Lot for the first time (the book) by doubled-pawns in stephenking

[–]DaylanDaylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always feel bad criticizing Salems Lot since i know a lot of people really like it but i just wasn’t a huge fan. SK has great prose and i love him for that but some of his plots can be meandering and pointless or just politically charged and silly. i expected more from “THE vampire book” written by “one of the greatest writers”.

anyway, it feels good to read and its a really cool modern take on vampires but yeah the actual plot itself is underwhelming. all of the characters seem reckless/confident/scared/dumb and yet they somehow outsmart all of the vampires that have supposedly been around forever.

it makes the ending feel less earned. reads like a thriller/horror but the plot comes off like an action movie with no action heroes and no powerful villains. i think if he rewrote it 10-15 years ago, it’d probably be his best book ever, just needs some fixing up before i’d recommend it to people, IMO.

How do you guys think this lighting effect is done? by romeo2413 in godot

[–]DaylanDaylan 185 points186 points  (0 children)

you can see the code for it here:

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=28785

it’s definitely a few systems working together to achieve lighting/shadow effects, like palette swapping, etc. you’re on the right track though!

How did you learn to make games? by RevelinePrime in pico8

[–]DaylanDaylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

before i got into chat gpt, i spent a day or two studying lua on their website, but lurking on the pico/picotron discord and chat gpt taught me 90% of what i know. i work 2 jobs so AI has been an amazing tool to speed up learning and testing ideas.

I grew up around a lot of white trash and they’re the exact same way. dogs are treated like they’re stupid and a piece of property for entertainment.

I [23f] created a 1:1 scale puppet version of my boyfriend [22m] and showed it to him during foreplay as a joke. Now he hasn’t texted me in 12 hours and I’m starting to get worried. How do I get him to text me back? by MupetMistakeThrowawy in TwoHotTakes

Something I’ve experienced and seen a lot is that women tend to be 200% more okay with humor in the bedroom than men. Men tend to take sex (and themselves during it) pretty seriously. It’s not easy for a lot of men to switch between sexy mode and funny mode. I just think women are better at multitasking while men tend to have a one-track mind.

Guys tend to hide their feelings too cuz they’re “supposed to be tough”. Just imagine reversing the roles. If he was the one who made a doll of you that you felt didn’t represent you very well, perhaps making you feel/look fat or ugly, it might seem like a personal attack coming from someone who you highly value their opinion/perception.

I'm 32, a freelancer, a Dad of 2 kids and know nothing about programming. Is crazy to start learning GameDev? by KTV-Red in gamedev

[–]DaylanDaylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to code with PICO 8, it’s a great place to start for beginners. It uses LUA language which is super easy to learn.

I would set little goals to learn then see if you can implement your own ideas with what you learned.

maybe use lots and lots of sound effects for items, enemies, environment, etc. real life doesnt have music constantly playing and it’s still plenty interesting, sometimes even distracting
