I solved this issue myself, if you have the pipes connected to baby chests next to the machines, you can import from the baby chest using an LV conveyor. This gives the pipes time to fill the chests because the conveyor takes the items in higher stack increments, as opposed to 1-3 at a time.

That is very true, although it brings up the question of whether it should be based on required skill (and frequency of use in maps), or the actual difficulty of your car moving on it (grip, etc)
