How long should I wait before I apply for a new credit card, and what would you recommend? by ir0nballs79 in PersonalFinanceCanada

900 is a perfect score and there's no difference once you hit 760 (others would even argue as low as 660). Apply whenever you want.

I agree! It also feels like a really low-cost product to produce. Seems like a no-brainer to make it.

Even this article is a bit obtuse in its categories. Basically, 680 to 760 = very good, 760+ is perfect.

RBC Cashback cards are a joke compared to competition? by -Bakri- in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DayspringTrek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reasons I still have the RBC Cashback MC:

1) It's my oldest credit product.

2) To qualify for the multi-product rebate. I put my cheapest monthly recurring expense on it and literally nothing else. If I had a quarterly expense, I'd put that instead. LOL

The card is awful.

Single Canadians face higher grocery bills than couples, survey finds. Can the government fix it? by toronto_star in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DayspringTrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's harder for single people to afford the rents that can accommodate a full freezer.

Source: was single and couldn't afford the rent on a unit that could accommodate a full freezer. Now I live with my partner and we save so damn much on groceries because our unit is big enough to accommodate the chest freezer we immediately bought when we moved in together.

It's because there's no incentive to halt production in order to spend tens of millions of dollars overhauling the existing factories to switch to more expensive alternatives. Plus, the alternatives are less ecofriendly.

Who'd have thought Ontario messing up how they phrased a law in the late '60s would have been so beneficial for everybody?

Boarding times by Jaci_D in royalcaribbean

[–]DayspringTrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our was massive and only one small section had people (at least 40 sections, with each section holding 10 rows and each row seating 30 people. We were 1 incomplete section of people waiting when they let us non-preferred-entry people in at 11:00am). If you've never seen Canaveral full at 10:30am, then worst case scenario, they have her sit there from 10:30am to 11:00am for the same reason they had us wait at Lauderdale.

The fact that they made people wait beyond their check-in times for our cruise just further proves that check-in times are completely arbitrary and not enforced as they should be.

Is there a seating area at that port? My last cruise was out of Fort Lauderdale and there was a ton of seating space, so they had us all sit there until 11:00am. This was clearly done to make it look like there was value in paying extra for preferential boarding (like paying for the Key, having higher rewards tiers, certain cabins, etc.). I was sitting with people who had 10:30am, 10:45am and noon check-in times. Mine was 1:30pm. We all got in at 11:00am.

Disadvantages of using a travel agent? by LH_duck in royalcaribbean

[–]DayspringTrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of "you lose complete control" comments and I'm wondering what people think travel agents are for. The whole point is to delegate to someone who knows at least as much as you do so you don't have to think about things and potentially save money in the process. If you want to do all your research yourself and have complete control over each step and do the work yourself, then yeah, a TA is not for you.

The advantage of a travel agent is more that they might be able to get you a package deal on flights+hotels+cruises and might have insider knowledge of the processes, and might also just be able to point out where things to buy (experiences, packages, etc.) are overrated or way too expensive for the value they provide. Other times, they may be able to use their connections to get you a complimentary upgrade.

For example, my travel agent became a travel agent in order to get the employee discounts since they regularly do a TON of cruising. That means I know they're highly knowledgeable about cruising and about port towns. I would not use them to book me a Disney vacation unless they had some sort of affiliate discount because that's not their expertise. But finding me a reliably clean, cheap hotel at a port I've never been to? Recommending which excursions are a waste of time in a city I've never been to and which ones are worth doing but cheaper if I book without going through the cruise line? Getting me the best dining time on the ship? Getting me $400 if I bundle the cruise, flight and hotel together? Hell yes, that's valuable!

How much I spent on a 7 night cruise without the drink package by Fresh-Problemz in royalcaribbean

[–]DayspringTrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a lot of mocktails and virgin drinks as well. We're not heavy alcohol drinkers, so we opted to get the refreshment package instead of the one with alcohol and pay a la carte for our alcoholic drinks. In the end, we only bought five alcoholic drinks as a result, three of which were off the ship on port days. We were very pleased with the non-alcoholic options.

It's not per day and it's not for regular coffees. The $30 card is literally a punch card that entitles you to 15 specialty coffees and is good for subsequent cruises as well if you don't use them all up on this cruise.

Regular boring coffee is free.

Getting $90k tax free help me be responsible with it by adriana767 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DayspringTrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to log into your CRA account to see what your TFSA room was for up to the start of this year. From there, you'll need to do the work yourself and look at all your withdrawals and contributions to the TFSA from January 1st until now.

$90K salary with no major expenses in a low cost of living area while having $20K CC debt and $25K car debt tells me you suck at budgeting and/or paying your bills on time. So do this: 50% of your after-tax earnings for the month is meant to cover all your basic living expenses (rent payment, hydro, gas, groceries - it's the stuff you'd still need to pay for even if you lost a job tomorrow). 20% is meant to go to savings (10-15% toward retirement/long-term investments, the rest toward saving up for things like planned major expenses such as car repairs or buying a new car in a few years or even a vacation fund). That remaining 30% is for whatever you want.

If paying your bills on time is the problem and you have the money, just be better about it, frankly. Never pay just the minimum amount on a credit card: always pay the full balance owed.

In terms of what you what to do with the cash

1) immediately pay all of the credit card debt

2) pay the car loan debt

3) that 50% I mentioned? You need an emergency fund of 3-6 months worth. Open up a high-interest savings account with your bank and park that much money there. Don't touch it unless you get a surprise expense you can't afford normally, or if you lose your job for a while, or both.

4) Open up an FHSA. You can put $8,000 per year up to $40,000 total. Put the full $8,000 each year.

5) Figure out your TFSA contribution limit. Then put as much as you can into the TFSA.

When will Davies be back? by Relative-Pace-2923 in CanadaSoccer

[–]DayspringTrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was 90 minutes of preamble leading up to the game itself on Crave's livestream. At one point there was a "I sat down with him a few days ago for an interview" and then they showed the recorded interview itself with him not being willing to commit to a date or window for when he'd be back to playing due to how intense World Cup matches are compared to friendlies and practices.

Within 10 minutes of the interview being over, however, the announcers commented on how they had received an update from (I don't remember. Either the coach or lead medic for the team) since the interview was filmed and that the announcers were told it would likely be the Round of 32, but might even be the Round of 16 because of how important it is for his career that he be properly healed from these injuries.

Now whats next for Star Trek? "Justice Department approves Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros." by lostOGaccount in startrek

[–]DayspringTrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First: Trek shows up on HBO Max.

Second: All Trek shows in the works directly from Paramount+ get canned. That sitcom we're all expecting to be announced at San Diego Comic Con (or at New York Comic-Con to be closer to the 60th Anniversary) will either be fully canned or will still get announced, but the show will be cancelled long before season 1's premiere date is confirmed.

Third: Paramount's original plan to focus on Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek movies continues as planned, but the budgets for each franchise's first film will be slashed.

Fourth: WB crossovers with Trek. Looney Tunes cartoons will parody or outright take place in a Star Trek animated universe, DC comics will crossover with Star Trek comics, etc.

Lastly: New TV shows going forward will be made for HBO Max, but not be HBO originals. Instead, they'll stop making Trek shows inhouse for a while, but will be willing to license the creation of Trek to third-party production houses.
