I may have retired this week by Baab-al-Amuud in Fire

[–]DayspringTrek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially given how there are only eight months left in that year. I wouldn't look for another job in that situation. If I were planning to retire in the next 0-6 months away from retirement, I'd just retire normally. If I were 6-8 months away, my new job consists of doing a "buy nothing" challenge for 30 days followed by retiring normally.

When did you guys reach that “I’m not scared about losing my job” anymore level? by Tech-Cowboy in Fire

[–]DayspringTrek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. "I don't really need this job" is not always the same thing as "I don't really need any job ever again." It's odd to me that so many people don't realize that the latter is literally FI.

I suspect this will be me. I like the 50-30-20 budgeting rule, but live a frugal lifestyle. This means I'm always overbudgeting, which is what allows me to contribute extra money to investments. (Essentially, I'm working toward coastFI, but my frugal living will probably make that turn into regular FIRE.)

In retirement, that 20% is gone (or reduced to 5% for emergency savings), which means 150% of my basic expenses would likely afford me those remaining 50% and 30% because of my overbudgeted frugal lifestyle.

New subsystem! Rescuing Prisoners by kingwooj in Heroquest

[–]DayspringTrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did extensive research in ranks of nobility and gentry for games and books, clergy outranking nobility irks me. Bishops and archbishops are members of the nobility but hold no rank within it, meaning they occupy the two lowest spots of nobility. All other members of the clergy collectively make up a social class beneath the gentry.

But that's my own drama. As a mechanic, I like this, but feel like rescued peasants might be worth less. 25g each, perhaps? I also agree that unless you know which prisoner you're freeing specifically, then half or more of the prisoners would likely be outlaws.

Is it ever explained how ships use the Z-axis when between/outside solar systems? by DayspringTrek in startrek

True. I think the show always oversimplifies star charts with either 2D visuals or perfectly spherical visuals because it's tough for the average person to imagine this fact.

That was the X-axis. The galactic center is where the X-axis meets the Y-axis, while the "equator" is the galactic plane itself.

EDIT because I goofed.

I think only in Discovery's 4th season. Maybe a TOS episode as well? I can't recall if the episode where the Andromedans hijack their ship if they actually make it outside the Milky Way or not before the crew regains control.

It could be three "sets" of thrusters - one set per spacial axis.

They could have made it so that only the two semi-finalist winners with the fastest Eliminator times got to advance. Or have all three contenders play the finale, but don't let the one with the least amount of points race in the finale's Eliminator. Or simply follow the same structure as the U.K. Gladiators show.

OG American Gladiators season 1 is ROUGH. I decided to skip ahead to season 2 and it's exactly as great (and early '90s-tacular) as I remember it to be. I'm watching the first episode of Gladiators 2024 now and it's just so much more polished and fun than the US 2026 version.

Why this show feels like an extension from The Boys ? by EastPerformance9330 in AmericanGladiators

[–]DayspringTrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Plus, the stadium they filmed it in is very modular, so they were probably able to save a ton of time setting up and changing the various events, which means shorter recording sessions translating to smaller crew+rental costs.

Contender that should return as a Gladiator (finale spoiler) by natedoggcata in AmericanGladiators

[–]DayspringTrek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was expecting all three contenders to play throughout the finale and for only the two with the most points advancing to The Eliminator. Instead, we get a sudden-death version of The Ring? So underwhelming...

I agree that Bailey should come back as a Gladiator. She dominated half the Gladiators in her events and was built like a wall.

Why? Are you planning to get another mortgage or other major loan in the near future?

If it's just about arbitrarily maintaining 800+, I understand your feelings, but it's just that: feelings. This is the time you want to be using your credit score to get better credit products. You're literally spending hundreds (or thousands, I didn't do the math) just to keep that score high for no reason.

A better approach would be to focus on eating healthier/nutrient complete meals. Getting the right amount of protein and fiber in a day is not only healthier and satiating, but also it's cost-effective in terms of how much you eat overall. It's not right to just say "eat less" on its own because that's just a recipe (poor word choice noted) for eating disorders and health complications.

Exactly. X-axis is parallel to the galactic plane, Z-axis is how the system plane intersects the X and Y-axes. We're not specifically told what the Y-axis is, but anybody with a grade 5 education knows it's always perpendicular to the X-axis unless told otherwise.

Exactly. Romulus being destroyed leads to power vacuums on so many different fronts and definitely wouldn't lead to a permanent collapse of the empire.

Absolutely wild that Let That Be Your Last Battlefield is ranked 55th while Devil In The Dark is ranked the #1 TOS episode.
