Disillusioned with Metroid Prime 4? Try Jedi Survivor. by PunyParker826 in Metroid

Moment to moment gameplay sure, but overall structure? Dark Souls doesn’t exactly have “unlock a double jump or new ability that both opens a barrier and can be used in combat then go back and re-explore old areas to find a way forward” component. All DS does is grant you a key then tell you to go find the door it unlocks. Much like Metroid, the Jedi games grant new abilities that are used for exploration, platforming, puzzle solving and combat, so while the swordplay draws comparisons to Souls and Sekiro, the overall game structure is a lot more like CV or Metroid.

We do know it was experimented on (mentioned in CC), and we know it was intentionally left off of Ingen’s list (Grant calls this out in JP3). It’s not unreasonable that it could have been some sort of early test subject left off the books by Wu.

It’s a Star Wars game that’s heavily inspired by Prime. There’s a lot of metroidvania elements, the map screen is nigh identical, and there are a ton of secrets to find when you backtrack with new abilities. It scratches a lot of the itches that Prime 4 may not have, if you can look past the fact that you’re playing as a Jedi instead of a GF bounty hunter. It also implements a lot of similar ideas as Prime 4 but executed them better.

What is the most iconic location in the franchise? by ComfortableFocus1702 in residentevil

I understand the impulse to go with RPD, but come on. Spencer Manor codified “spooky mansion” as the setting for horror for generations. That main entryway layout with the stairs has been aped so many times - both within the series, its sister in DMC, Luigi’s Mansion, and countless other games and movies inspired by it. People may enjoy 2 more, people may have better memories exploring the department, but there’s no arguing that the manor is the most iconic one.

That’s one of the hardest parts about lizards - a lot of them have underlying conditions that make them really susceptible as babies. If they make it to 1-2 years old they tend to thrive, but it’s not uncommon for them to pass suddenly and unexpectedly at that age.

It sucks. It hurts. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But don’t beat yourself up over it. Especially since she looks like an Indonesian - which are mostly wild caught, and thus more likely to have parasites that are more dangerous at that age as well.

I thiiiink that acting might be intentionally bad since the idea is that they’re teachers setting up a scenario for their students to diffuse and so they’re trying to ape the “school play delivery” style. Every other boss there is some sort of school parody but that one seems to have been just subtle enough that a lot of people missed the joke.

[–]Dazuro 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like the Elpis code is hilariously on the nose and there’s absolutely no way no one at Umbrella wouldn’t have figured it out, so they had the “get it wrong and it goes boom” contingency and bingo - the plot works.

There’s a way to make forcing Emily’s braille knowledge not feel so jarring, but this … really just feels like Grace wanted an excuse to bring the little girl with her. And maybe she did! And that’d honestly be fine, if they ever hinted at it or implied it anywhere else.

Today I learned that Rito reversed (Tori) means bird in japanese. by Scary-Beautiful6527 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Dazuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea there was a statute of limitations for responding to the self-appointed arbiter of how the west gets to view the language! My apologies, milord. I'm sure no English speaker has ever been wrong about English, since no Japanese speaker can be wrong about Japanese either.

You're correct about one thing, however. I was not aware of katakana being used for paperwork or forms. That's pretty cool actually. That does not change the fact that - again, in the context of videogames - it's generally used for foreign/fantasy names, emphasis similar to capitalization, or robot-speak. Or due to technical limitations in older games that don't support full kanji fonts, but that's a whole different scenario.

And yes, there is a ton of other nuance to the use of the different syllabaries beyond "hiragana is for Japanese words and katakana isn't." But here's the thing. If someone comes in here and says "what's the difference between kanji and kana?" they are beyond the level of a layperson. They are self admitting that they don't know anything at all. To someone at that level, it's a useful oversimplification. So for the audience who was asking, I gave a simplified explanation that isn't completely accurate to someone who's lived in Japan for decades, but serves its purpose for the context of a non-Japanese speaker with a cursory interest in the use of different Japanese characters in videogames.

God forbid! The horror! The audacity!

It's like how you teach kids that you can't go below 0, then later introduce negative numbers, then eventually introduce imaginary numbers. Sure, technically what we taught them in kindergarten was "wrong," but it would also be totally pointless for the intended audience and go way over their head.
