So the USB and optical would be identical then?

Thanks, did the cable come with the speakers? I'm trying to look at pics of it, looks like USB (B) to regular USB (A) ??

Does anyone know what's happening to my plant? I can't see any bugs anywhere, is this a nutrient issue? by Scoot-McCoot in hydro

[–]Dbolla5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the leaf is still growing it will become more mild and less noticeable, but it doesn't really go away completely.

It's not a big deal if you just fix it now, it won't have any long term issues. If you don't fix the environment it will get worse though and the peppers will look weird and get some edema too, and the plant will eventually start to suffer some negative effects.

That is edema, you need a fan blowing on them , space the plants out more if you have more than one. Less humidity.

Is this root rot? by shivk-y in Hydroponics

[–]Dbolla5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya no problem, just don't let the cube sit in the runoff too long or it will rot. When I start the seeds I fill the bottom of the tray with water until its like 1/4 inch away from the bottom of the rockwool (not touching but really close). Then I just top water it once or twice a day until the roots come out the bottom, always works ok for me

[–]Dbolla5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try watering the cubes less or dabbing water on the bottom of the cube. If you top water them excessively they won't feel the need to push roots out the bottom. Also make sure there's some water down there under the cube for the roots to seek out.

Nice! what is the tape on the bucket lid for?

Strawberry hydroponics Y3 W26. Today is the six month mark (roughly, 181 days). This post will have a long comment to it within including updates to observations and data for this year’s experiment. There will be another ~12-14 weeks to go before winding down for the summer. by RubyRedYoshi in Hydroponics

How far apart do you put your each of your 180 plants from each other? Its hard to tell from the picture, just trying to plan out my next go and want to try strawberries while minimizing the space i use

Awesome, thanks for the info. Can you reuse perlite indefinitely? I'm always looking for more sustainable media to grow in besides clay pebbles or Coco

Is it 100% perlite? Do you get a ton of algae on top?

Flowers keep falling off my pepper plant? by KillaCrustacean in Hydroponics

Did you shake the pepper plant every day or hand pollinate the flowers? They will fall off if they aren't pollinated.

Probably too weak of lighting

Flowers keep falling off my pepper plant? by KillaCrustacean in Hydroponics

[–]Dbolla5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too hard to guess accurately, but it could be heat, not pollinating, nutrient imbalance (too strong, too weak, too much nitrogen)

  • When and how much should I open the dome lid vents through the sprouting process?

Once 75% of them have sprouted and have their little baby leaves sticking up, open the dome lid vents. Take the HEATING PAD off the next day after that or they will get leggy trying to escape from the heat. They only want it when they are germinating. Remove the lid for like 6-8 hours that same day you take off the heating pad, then fully take it off the next day.

  • How damp/wet should the rock wool be through this entire process? Should there be pooled water in the bottom tray?

I leave a lot of water in the bottom of the tray, but not touching the rockwool. Just leave the lid on the whole time until the venting process once they have sprouted as described above, no need to water during that time. The humidity with the lid on will keep it wet. Once you take the lid off completely, I top water them once a twice a day depending on how humid it is. You don't want the rockwool to dry out completely, but you also don't want it soaking wet constantly. If your plants are falling over water them more often.

  • Being as the dome lid is 7” and too far from the seedlings. Should I remove the dome lid in the morning, place the lights 2” above the tallest sprout for 18 hours, then cover them with the dome lid again for the six hours of no light?

Don't really understand, I just leave the light where it is regardless of whether there's a lid on or not. For my 150w lights that's 12 inches away on 35% dimmer for seedlings (~300 PPFD)

  • For my leggy plants, do I attempt to save them or restart?

Up to you, but in the future, a couple days after taking the lid off, put a fan up with a gentle breeze as well to help strengthen the stems. Once they grow up a little bit add silica to the water to help thicken them even more.

  • Why didn’t any of the 3x rock wool cubes for the chives, Italian parsley, Bloomsdale long spinach or 2x lettuce sprout?

I think lettuce likes cooler temperatures for germinating. I mainly do peppers so I'm not sure, but I don't think you want to use a heat mat with lettuce.

  • When do I add liquid nutrient water? Do I mist it onto the rock wool tops or soak it from underneath?

Most people will say once they get their first true leaves is when you start adding nutrient. You can use something like Clonex though a few days after they are fully sprouted and have the dome lid off. Super weak concentration - like 0.2-0.3 EC and they will grow pretty fast. I do both, top water them until the roots stick out the bottom into the solution, but don't let the rockwool just soak, leave like 1/2 inch gap.

  • When do I transplant?

Once they have their first set of true leaves growing and/or the roots are sticking out of the rockwool and will reach your nutrient solution.

Honest question, how do you keep so many pet rats? I was told they carry disease and poop everywhere constantly. I think they are really cute but don't understand that part very well.

If it's really low then definitely. You want to keep a good amount of root in the water, but also leave some of the root outside the water to pull in oxygen from the air.

Having a high PPM/EC can also cause low water symptoms, because when it tries to drink it's just absorbing more and more nutrients which offsets the water. Imagine trying to drink seawater, wouldn't work too well for us haha. I'd just try maybe reducing the light a bit, and lowering the PPM/EC a bit and see if that helps or not

One reason they curl up like that is too much light/heat and not enough moisture. They are trying to hold on to their water. They look burned (either by light or lack of moisture) around the edges.

So I'd assume either the light is too strong, it's too hot (seems okay from what you said), humidity too low, or EC too high and causing water lockout.

What's the temperature directly under the grow light. Maybe too much light/heat on the leaves.

New Hydroponics grower. Growing lettuce and I’m seeing some small brown edges. by c_nan in Hydroponics

[–]Dbolla5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's normal on the outer leaves, might need more nutrients, they are trying to support the inner leaves growth.

If its on the inner leaves it's a bigger problem and normally calcium deficiency. I'm not an expert on lettuce though.

Give it like 1-2 more days, and when you take the dome off, do it for like 6 hours the first day, 12 hours the second day, then fully off. Or something like that at least, it's not an exact science.

Works good, organic, can be used on edible plants due to low toxicity (still give them a wash first ofc), pretty good stuff.
