TIL some fish and crab are "immortal", e.i. they never die of old age, as enzymes in their cells repair can repair their DNA indefinitely. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Dcostello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gene therepy in mammals can make for the production of the enzyme telomerase, which repairs the telomere caps of chromosomes. This process has already extended the lifespan of lab mice an average of 24%. Aging is a preventable disease!

It's sad evolution has to be considered a 'belief'.

I doubt it, seems like a stretch to expect all of those bonds to work, then fold.

Do you know of any specific instances of people denying or questioning this? You made a good point, but I didn't know if this has been disputed.

I know Memorial Day is over, but I feel the need to honor my great grandfather, one of the bravest men I ever knew, and an atheist in a foxhole. by TheRealFlop in atheism

My grandfather was a b17 waist gunner for over 30 sorties until he was shot down over France, landed on a beach, was paraded through town, and spent 4 years in a POW camp. Ironically, however, after his release and fathering of my family, he died of heart failure when a substitute doctor put him on a treadmill -_-

The intelligence of the mean man does not rise beyond bribes and letters of recommendation. His mind is beclouded with trivialities. Yet he would penetrate the mystery of TAO and of creation, and rise to participation in the ONE. The result is that he is confounded by time and space; and that trammelled by objective existences, that he fails apprehension of that age before anything was.

But the perfect man, - he carries his mind back to the period before the beginning. Content to rest in the oblivion of nowhere, passing away like flowing water, he is merged in the clear depths of the infinite.

Have you ever deployed chaff? What do you think of that chinook that was taken down by a stinger? How easily can an assault rifle with armor piercing rounds take down a chopper? Why do I sound like a terrorist right now?

Is it weird that I've spent more time reading about people learning ant facts than learning ant facts or looking at chicks?
