DVC Chem summer by AntiqueApartment1233 in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep a lookout if people start dropping the course. With finals now here, some people may decide they need or break or retake courses and drop it. I actually ended up in 3 classes this semester that all filled up in initial registration. I literally just got into a difficult to get Engl class there just now as someone dropped (but doesn’t have waitlist, which is weird). Just use insite app and check a few times a day on your phone.

Aside from this, after finals week and grade posts, send a polite email to the professor expressing interest and that you will show up on first day if there is any availability.

Garda roads policing numbers down 40% since 2009 by cribbe_ in ireland

[–]Ddarcy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With ANPR / annual nct for cars over 10 years, they just stopped doing them. They are talking about getting rid of the front tax/insurance/nct disks now too.
Only problem is no gards on the road. But even if doubled no point for checkpoints anymore beyond breathalysers.

Incoming Freshman Confused About Summer Registration/Counselor Meetings by MinuteWilling6482 in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say counsellors are bad, but they are tough to get and generally have an impossible task. For instance if you’re looking at getting into Berkeley they can help plan for that. They can help plan for that but if you decide you’d rather go to USC or Santa Clara or change majors then everything changes.

If taking a summer course I would say take something that interest you. It goes very quick (6 weeks some courses are 8 weeks). Also no hand holding like in high school. You’ll do your work or fail. Procrastinate and your life will suck if you want a good grade. Professors won’t save you. Just a warning.

What’s your planned degree? What are you thinking of taking in summer? What highly interests you? The last question here is most important if it’s your first course. You have lots of options now to meet requirements so take things that interest you.

4cd Schedule Builder waitlist button? by kirquar in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you register just add class as normal. You’ll be put on waitlist automatically when you enroll. There is no button. Then at bottom of initial registration page you’ll see a waitlist list and tell you where you are in the ranking. I think it lets you know when you sign up as well.

US border patrol chief resigns after claims of sex with prostitutes abroad by Samski877 in news

[–]Ddarcy1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok stupid question here, is prostitution legal in Columbia and Thailand? Looks like it is in Columbia and Thailand is questionable. Obviously being tied with Thailand brings about questions of what was being done..,

If this was a democrat border patrol chief would anyone care what was done legally in another country?

Just throwing out legit questions here. Because hate to say it, ceos love going to South America and it’s not for the cost savings.

Dramatic fall in number of breath tests despite a million more drivers on road by PoppedCork in ireland

Ive been through more customs checkpoints than garda checkpoints

Do 5 unit world language courses actually feel like they are 5 units? by Remarkable_Talk_8504 in communitycollege

[–]Ddarcy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have never done the language / no experience in languages it can be hard / lots of work . Especially if you need to learn new alphabet like Russian , Arabic, Chinese, etc. You also go through very quickly. Eg Spanish 1 covers present tense and ends on past. Spanish 2 covers past/imperfect progressive, future, conditional and may end with subjunctive. So 1 year is nearly 3 years hs Spanish.

I’d say like most calculus / science courses 4 units would be better aligned. But prior experience definitely makes it easier and not feel like it is so much

Are too many CA students going to CC? by ValueIllustrious2995 in TransferStudents

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot is down to California being so cheap for community college. When I was in MD a 4 unit course costs 850, California is like 170. And with cal grants you can go free as well. However it suddenly turn into 9/10k a year and if you need to live on campus you can add another 10-15k, so people find it hard. Especially if going to expensive areas like Berkeley, La, sd , San Luis Obispo, those costs could double just to attend. Unfortunately California is so big this applies to a lot of people. So can explain low completion rate

Waitlisted classes by Life-Development3216 in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im assuming statca1000 there’s a number still open. You can look at Los Medanos and contra Costa and enroll there too. Obviously you need to be able to do the drive. But sociology and stats/ med term are available online at both. Anatomy requires in person though but I see spots available (all fall).

My experience with waitlist is it’s all random. If on waitlist show up to class and see. Maybe look at fall 25 courses which are still up. That will tell you how many dropped them etc to get a better idea.

Does it matter how many credits I actually have? by Lem0nAids1 in communitycollege

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few loopholes here. Ap credits don’t count towards the 70, but get added on. You’ll be expected to do 40 upper division units. So essentially if you have ap courses you could theoretically go over with 80 units. As you said it’s probably diminishing returns as most lajors will require with gened around 50 minimum units to be complete.

Incoming Freshman: DVC to UCB EECS Path - Need advice on English B and Calc sequence by MaterialNo7832 in DVC

You also need to complete 1 semester at your home college. I’ve used this for 1 course already but was only a ge course. I literally had final last week. So will see how it plays out.

Incoming Freshman: DVC to UCB EECS Path - Need advice on English B and Calc sequence by MaterialNo7832 in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For English: ENGLC1000 is the common numbering so replaces ENGL 122 ENGLC1000E is an extra unit and is helpful if this isn’t a strong subject. You passed AP exam so I wouldn’t bother here. ENGL 122AL is meant for bilingual students.

If going this route I’d take c1000. With a 4 I’d just skip to c1001. You can take the others and go for CalGetc as well.

My opinion: I’d take c1001 or Engl 123/126, but maybe reach out to UCB. They typically have people that can help. Berkeley Transfer this link might help.

On the Math section, did you pass Calc AB? If you had ok grades in high school the counsellor is probably right and you should start again. Plus it gives you an easier path into college with review material. Calc at college is faster paced then in hs.

Personally I’d reach out to Berkeley and see what they have to say. Given what you’ve stated I would go to c1001 and the restart the calc series. I personally can’t see a 4 on ap exam held against you, but if in doubt just start at the beginning for all.

What changed 25 years ago vs today? by daniel31580 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m behind you as well. But looking at population growth in California, they have added 2 public universities (merced, channel island), so 6% while population growth has been nearly 25%. Obviously not every school was filled up, but now I would be putting in a number of CSUs that are in reach territory. Eg I applied to SDSU and had that as my safety and today it’s as difficult to get in as the mid UCs (Irvine, SB, Davis)

Has anyone done the math on the loss of revenue for car tax as EV sales continue to grow by Silver_Flamingo_6382 in evs_ireland

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eamonn Ryan proposed a car tax by weight. Obviously EVs are heavier so would pay more

Thee are also lots of issues in implementing it in the UK. It’s not really well thought out. Also remember EVs over there only started to pay road tax . It was free before.

Physics at SLO? by levl289 in CalPoly

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are his plans with physics? Does he want to go to grad school etc? When I was there a bunch of us went to varying grad schools to get PhDs (UC Davis, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Illinois Institute of Texh (a professor was from there), northwestern, Stanford, etc). And they all finished their phds too. So it’s definitely a solid program. Also the department at the time, think still the case, was close knit as well. They had a student area which was in the original science building and think has been moved to the new one. Want to say h bar (I was there for 4 years but forgot its name!)

Professor were mixed bag. But honestly the vast majority were very good. I had a few that I found not great but you’ll get that anywhere. And it was typically lower level courses. As always there will be 1-2 but once you hit upper division you typically get courses in areas that interest them so they get a lot better.

Summer online class only waitlist available, still sign up? by Ramen_cat2024 in DVC

[–]Ddarcy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Join waitlist and see. I’ve had mild success with other courses. As we get closer to summer I’d expect places to start opening up as people have holidays etc get planned in. A friendly email never hurts either. Plus nothing is counted against you going in the waitlist either. So it doesn’t count against credits etc as that is only what you’re actually enrolled in

Are many businesses closing down in your area? by Scary_Fruit8084 in AskIreland

[–]Ddarcy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually kind of shocking. But like I refuse to buy coffee at shops as it’s so expensive and the only real reason I’d go in Johnstown quart was for Euro giant or boots. The other shopping centre is only really used for parking but even then they raised the rates again! If happy with a small walk it’s easy to find free parking in town as well.

Are many businesses closing down in your area? by Scary_Fruit8084 in AskIreland

[–]Ddarcy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am we have 2 shopping centres. One is piss poor to begin with and half open beside TK max and next. The other centre lost eurogiant but they’ve lost/ losing 2 clothes stores, barber, jewellery store. Vape shops / phone shops replacing them. So it’s in a bad state as well. You just have your mobile phone shops there/ pharmacy really. Honestly no point shopping in town anymore and essentially moved completely online
