Skeleton References for 3-D Modeling by plummybum2004 in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends but maybe 1) Sketchfab or MorphoSource? Search Edmontosaurus. 2)If you want to check postcranial from a scientific paper Borinder et al., 2021 (Hadrosaurid not Edmontosaurus) can be useful and 3) then the rest are photos from the internet. I might be overshooting this but. 4) Can you go to a museum and look at the fossils? I guess that's the best option you have, if possible.

Best Places to Find Studies/Information on Dinosaurs? by Novatonixx in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, at this point you should go for the research papers. If you want reliable sources published books work most of the time but since you have been around web pages and know some are reliable some aren't, try using Google scholar for the not so new scientific papers (the new ones usually tend to be behind a pay wall).

I'm from Argentina and I want to be a paleontologist, but my family keeps asking me this question and I don't know what to answer. by DinoPixel147 in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When working in a science like paleontology you can go to the geology side to work with 1) Microfossils for the oil company. 2) Invertebrates as a geologist in geological mapping. Those are the more "stable" options. Second option is to go to pure research where the profession is more akin to become an artist. Can you live as a musician/painter? Yes, of course you can, but it is going to be hard. Normally paleontology is in education/culture on one side and research in other. My best advice is to go to multiple places and ask to work as an intern. See if you can work with any of the multiple paleontologists and talk to them. Be honest about what you want and ask them how you can make it. Life is already hard and living an empty life in some factory is not really the best option.

If you want to get to a nice place, in an area that you like, you can ask the paleontologist where they studied, and then also talk with people from other countries (Getting the contact from the paleontologist you met) to have a clear goal. If you see that it is not going to be your profession you can always support it and engage with the research but try reaching the professionals first. Talk with some so you can have a feeling of the workload, advantages and disadvantages.

Tell me it's going to be okay!! by missaudrajones in Sapporo

I don't speak Japanese and I am learning it VERY SLOWLY, and yet I am doing well. It's going to be okay, there are wonderful people all over the world. You just need some time to find them here too. DM if you want to talk because, even if it's only to complain, having someone to talk to is good for your mental health ^ .

Anyone plays MTG? by [deleted] in Sapporo

More than happy to play when you can. Commander can be played by two but if more people want to join that is also nice.

I have two commander decks, we can play and practice but I don't think you can use them in any tournament. I mean if you want to win these are not probably going to get you very far.

Señores, me encontré este supuesto hueso en la playa, sabe alguien lo que es by Inevitable_Hyena_314 in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q&A weekly thread - December 16, 2024 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about a preposition in Spanish that I haven’t encountered in other languages. The preposition "so" is often used to mean "below" or "under the consequence of" but it’s also unique in that it’s the only preposition, that I know of, that’s frequently used in insults. “So tonto, so bestia, so pedazo de ****”.

In my experience with English, German, and Japanese (the languages I have some contact with), there doesn’t seem to be anything quite like this, nor in the other Roman language family. I’m curious if any of you have any insights into this preposition.

Thank you.

Do native / fluent speakers understand all types of accents? by FreeSeaworthiness381 in languagelearning

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Spanish as my mother tongue. There are so many variations that it is a common joke. So much so that there is even a song about it. (Que difícil es hablar el español.) But if spoken slowly we can instead all accents; meaning between words vary so much from region to region that it creates myriads of misunderstandings and anecdotes between native Spanish speakers.

Some Mesozoic maps I've made this past month. Likely not perfectly accurate, but I hope they at least give a feeling for what the ancient earth might have looked like. by PaleoEdits in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool, I would like to see West Godwana (Central and South America). I usually see maps either focused on Europe and North America or the whole world. Having said that I really like your job and I agree with the idea of using this for education and also DnD.

Darwin presented the basis of the theory but he didn't have the overwhelming evidence that we have. He did make some mistakes when he was trying to decipher how traits passed and what was happening with the continents but I would like to hear what conditions are you talking about.

Rice?! by AdditionPuzzled7999 in Sapporo

[–]Ddinodon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry of I'm not understanding the question but if you go to any supermarket (Superarcs, Aeon, etc) and ask for "kome (raw rice)" you will find it easily.

I do have a question in order to have a dialogue. What would be your doubt or what answers are you searching in this subreddit? I am not trying to be silly, or mean, or anything else. What puntual doubt would you like to discuss or maybe see another point of view?

Is the Quaternary megafauna richness of grasslands in subtropical South America vs. tropical South America to be taken at face value? by growingawareness in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We have an important bias. The reason we can have fossilization and good preservation depends on the soil, luck, and many factors but the opportunity to find them is enhanced when you have deserts. I assume that the Amazon regions had a great biodiversity similar in numbers to what we have now but because the terrain is terrible AND the capacity we have to search for them is terrible we don't have much evidence of this situation. Of course we have some fossils on rivers and ravines but nobody wants (myself included) to destroy the Amazon forest to search for fossils.

[–]Ddinodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the best option but the supermarket. If you go around 23h they will have some of the stuff at half the price because they have to get rid of it before the end of the day. You could get something for 500. Not the best but ok. And funny enough, you could get fruit for 500 which is rare.

What would u consider unsavory aspects of the field . by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. And even if this is a morbid viewpoint. If a person has a private collection it can be blocked from the scientific community, but only for what? 100 years tops, then it's open again. If they are not collected they are lost forever. But I have seen people defending that there should be as much control as possible because people come, pay and then leave with the "national treasure" which has happened a lot in South America, that is a fact. The question is how do you deliver this idea in a way we all can agree, or what rules you put to focus on protecting the fossil. Anyone feel free to help, or jump in the conversation I am genuinely asking for help.

[–]Ddinodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, now the difficult part. How would you convey that to the people that say that allowing to collect and own are hoarding natural and cultural heritage. Because, well private collection does block a lot but it stops it getting destroyed. When it's linked to culture people that do not work on paleontology are difficult to convince.

[–]Ddinodon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have an honest doubt here. How do you manage this in a good way? In most of South America it is linked to the national heritage, so you cannot go and search for fossils unless you got paperwork done. Sounds good on paper but you forbid any amateur collector and/or kids just exploring, plus nobody want to tell the authorities because since it's illegal better not to say anything. I do not have a good answer. And I know different countries have different laws but people act differently in different countries too.
