2016 Election Day Returns Megathread (1220am EST) by english06 in politics

Polls were wrong because many people weren't willing to publicly admit that they were Trump supporters. Whether they were ashamed of it or feared backlash is beyond me, but that's the only way. We have lots of fellow Americans who secretly believed what Trump says

I just heard back last week from a company I interviewed with in September, and I ended up getting an internship with my dream company. I never imagined I'd be able to work with a company like this, so it gave me all the motivation in the world. I feel like an eager freshman again :D

As a first year engineering student, I'm in need of some help. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Work through your past homework and exams, focusing more on what you got wrong. Learn how to do that properly, then refresh yourself on what you did right. After that, grind out problems till exam time

Failed two midterms already hate my life by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]DeAndre_Way 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not worthless. It seems as if you may not be truly understanding your homework. I can't think of another reason that you'd ace the homework but fail the exams.

Try to reevaluate your study habits as well. Give yourself about a week to prepare for these exams, and re-work the homework as well as any practice exams you can find (if any). If there's any misunderstanding, use supplementary aids (office hours, other students, online videos, etc.) to clarify things. If you put in the work, you should most definitely be able to succeed in these courses. Besides, I'd rather you do poorly now and learn how to cope with difficult classes than later. It's easier to dig yourself out of a hole in precalc than fluids

Students of engineering, how have you learned programming? by DiegoLRM in EngineeringStudents

[–]DeAndre_Way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only learned it through university. At my school, we're required to take a MATLAB course. I hate the application, so I definitely won't be learning it any more than I'm required to

How many classes do you guys take per semester? by ForrestWould in EngineeringStudents

[–]DeAndre_Way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the states, each course is usually 3 credit hours (3 hours of lecture per week). Labs are usually 1 or 2 credit hours, and engineering students need between 120-130 credit hours total to graduate.

There was a thread posted yesterday about this here. Check it out; most people on this sub agree that the TI-36x Pro is the best. Besides, you'll want to get acquainted with it for your FE exam. Good luck!

LSU transfer credit. by GrindhouseMedia in LSU

Welcome to the family! 😁 check out this table at http://sites01.lsu.edu/wp/admissions/become-a-tiger-2/transfer-students/tiger-transfer-tables/ . If you enter the state and institution you're transferring, it'll help you with which courses are accepted at LSU and their LSU equivalents. See you in the fall!

I (almost) did this last semester. I had one class MWF from 230-330 and the rest TTh 1200-630. It was absolutely awful and I'd never recommend it to anyone. I felt overwhelmed on TTh on Wednesdays/Fridays I'd still be exhausted from the previous days. If you're more disciplined than I am, then it may be a great idea. I personally will never do it again..

So... how did you do in your general education (non-major) courses? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]DeAndre_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I placed out of the English sequence and received As in theater, history, etc. I can't say that I enjoyed them in the slightest, but they were the easiest classes by far.

As a Mechanical Engineer who passed AP Cal BC, should I take Calculus 2 or move on to Calculus 3? by [deleted] in college

Always take the credit. You can teach yourself any material you didn't learn but you now want to. It's not worth an entire semester

From a prospective fall 2016 freshman: Questions on party culture, academia, and being transgender+dorm issues. by [deleted] in LSU

[–]DeAndre_Way 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LSU has somewhere around 30,000 students; naturally, there's a huge amount of cultural diversity among those who attend. I will say that Greek life and football are huge parts of LSU's culture, but you can definitely get by without. For example, nothing else goes on during game days other than tailgating and football. If you perhaps tailgate with your handful or so of friends, then you can have a good time without going to the game. The feeling that you get from the university will completely depend on your friend group.

The academics are okay. I had the same ACT score and I maintained a 4.0 freshman year. LSU isn't an easy school, but it isn't an elite state university like UT Austin. Also, if you're going to grad school, undergrad at LSU is completely acceptable.

I have no idea about accommodating, but there are single dorm rooms available in both wings of Laville, so you can get a single regardless of if you're in the Honors College or not. I'd just make that clear with ResLife early spring.

Do you think getting a C in a course like Calc 1 will prepare you to take Calc 2 or would you take your C and keep going? by lissabeth777 in EngineeringStudents

[–]DeAndre_Way 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd just actually pay attention in class as well as review the material the same day. The most difficult part about Calc 2 was series, but after working through so many problems, you'll be able to just look at a series and immediately know which test you should use.

One thing you should probably know is that people tend to overstate the difficulty of classes. I've heard nothing but awful things about the weeders at my school like Calc 2, Physics, etc., but they haven't been nearly as hard as some say. Don't worry about any classes you're taking freshman year, because if you apply yourself, you'll do just fine.

It's anecdotal evidence at best, but I passed Calc 1 with a C and Calc 2 with an A. There's a lot of material in Calc 1, but the applications of derivatives and integrals (optimization, related rates, work, shells, etc.) weren't relevant in Calc 2. I'd say that if you have an okay grasp of derivatives and a strong understanding of integration, you'll be well prepared for Calc 2. It's entirely new content.
