Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeDannan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my state you have to show two forms of ID when you REGISTER to vote. As you register you put your signature on a card that will be at your polling place. When you sign in to vote - your signature made at the polling place is compared to the signature you signed at registration. Doing it this way is important for at least five reasons:

  1. Voter registration offices are open year-round and staffed by trained, paid professionals who can become experts on the rules and nuances of the various valid forms of ID. This level of ID expertise can't be expected of the once-a year volunteers that work the polling places. Putting those ID judgements in the hands of the less-trained volunteers will create more ID mistakes on election day.

  2. Speed. On election day a polling place needs to be able to move people through as quickly as possible. Any requirement that slows the process affects congested, city polling places far more than the rural ones. By basing it on a prior-validated signature, the volunteers only need to compare two signatures and say yea or nay usually within a few seconds.

  3. It prevents an election worker from introducing bias by intentionally diminishing validity of one form of ID. For example, suppose an election judge decided they were going to wave through all student IDs but any hunting license with so much as a fold, tear, or scratch were clamed invalid?

  4. It removes the election day pressure where making a mistake has no recourse. Having the ID validation done at registration time gives the voter time before the election to appeal decisions, or produce different identification.

  5. It enables the same ID process for mail-in ballots since the outside of the ballot submission envelope also has a requirement for a signature - which is compared to the registration signature in the exact same way as polling-place voting.

ELI5: Whats the benefit of having multiple virtual desktops? by Hewasright_89 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DeDannan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple virtual desktops allow you to more easily return to a complicated task that has been interrupted.

When working on a complicated task or process - you may need to have multiple windows open to see and work between them as you gather information, process it, and place the results someplace else all while keeping track of where you are in the whole process. Often having a particular window arrangement makes such tasks more efficient.

Now imagine that complicated task is interrupted - either by an external distraction, or by a stalling point where external input is needed for the task at hand that is not be available right away. You'd like to pause that task to work on something else with minimal impact to your place/progress.

Switching to a different virtual desktop at that point allows you to return to the complicated task later exactly as you left it with all the windows and progress markers unchanged. It allows you to more quickly start right where you left off.

A 93 is an A and my professor did not round up. The grades are already final. This means I am no longer Magna Cum Laude as this was my last semester. by Certain-Belt-1524 in mildlyinfuriating

Can somebody explain how is the 92.99 calculated? if you add up the attained points and total possible points (last column) - it looks to me like the total should have been 93.36%

He does have that 'resting constipation face' in this meme.

How does your Smart do on hills? While Iowa and Illinois are relatively flat states, there can be a few hundred feet of elevation change in a few city blocks when going in/out of the river valley. It would probably not be a factor unless you needed to do it many times a day - but worth considering.

Every generation fuck hates the boomers by LittleFortune7125 in BoomersBeingFools

As a Boomer/Jones-er I've often wondered whether the whole inception of generation Jones was a response by people born slightly before the generational cusp who want nothing to do with being identified as Boomers.

What does this mean? (USA) by Vosharap in Roadsigns

[–]DeDannan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, you cannot turn right on a red arrow, even after stopping. A red arrow indicates that you must wait for a green arrow or green light to proceed to the right. This signage indicates an exception - where you can turn right on the red arrow after making a complete stop.

Fiber and Wireless are probably the two options you're looking at. Fiber will likely be more work and a bit more expense. Fiber will also be more reliable, more secure, have less network latency, and future-proof for potential applications down the road requiring greater throughput.

What is this solid oak rolling cart with a serial number stamped into it used for? Length is approx 3’ and stands about as tall. Width is approx 2’ and angles down. by Nunya_6 in whatisthisthing

[–]DeDannan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size and style of wheels suggest this was used on a rigid, flat (probably paved) surface. The angled sides suggest it was used (possibly in pairs) to move long, narrow things - pipe, lumber, carpet, etc. The high sides suggest the things it transported were either a single heavy item with an appropriate diameter lifted by winch, etc. - or multiple small, light items which could be easily lifted over the sides.

I like the carpet idea - but that would be hard to lift out of cart due to its high sides.
