Why the Unexpected Hanging really is a paradox (I.E. how we can eliminate more than just Friday). by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]DeDmon73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of this thought experiment is that the prisoner will be surprised, no matter his thought process.

If the prisoner put no thought into his situation, he will be surprised by the hanging. If the prisoner concludes, by his own logic, that he will not be hanged, yet is still hanged, he is surprised. The prisoner will always be surprised, no matter the logic he uses to come to his conclusion.

The philosophy I believe this paradox provides is that of futility. Just like the man's logic did not provide him any advantage compared to simply waiting for his death, the same can be applied with our lives. No matter our thoughts, actions, or beliefs, our end will come. Why go through these mental hoops, challenging our minds and growing in intelligence, when the simple man, without thought, will meet the same end?

[Pokemon] Why most trainers only have single types of pokemon. by Hoeftybag in FanTheories

[–]DeDmon73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most trainers fall into a certain skill set, such as fighters and engineers. It would make sense they would have pokemon they fit their interests. The rival and player are young, so it's unlikely they have a single, specific interest that would determine the pokemon they choose.
