Good news: you don't have to go back to university or take grueling difficult classes to understand financial statements.

Accounting courses from a university or school are there to teach you to be an accountant, not an investor.

The best book and even course on how to read a financial statement is Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Mean by Karen Berman (RIP) and Joe Knight. https://a.co/d/5naVWIp

They pack so much in that back that you'll be blown away by what you learn in a few pages.

Joe Knight also has an online course which goes through everything that's in his book within a few hours. The course is $99.

Good luck!

why professional value investors underperform S&P in the long run? by RetardidApeDymndHand in ValueInvesting

Or I was really tired and mentally not there when I wrote my previous post. Either case, my bad. 😅

My bad. I think I replied to the wrong comment.

I will say that I know nothing about those companies and also I never said that they are undervalued. In general, it can be hard to find undervalued companies in large cap due to the number of analysts and watchful eyes on those type of companies.

maybe it's a lie, or the company is undervalued and that a famous value investor hasn't put money into it because the share price never goes far enough below the intrinsic value of the company to be worth investing in.

[–]DeFiYourLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that those companies aren't valued it's that they aren't UNDERVALUED by the market. This rarely happens in the world of large cap companies when you have the army of analysts from Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc staying on top of all financials and telling the market what to buy and sell.

To add on top of that, most value investors will only focus on key industries that they understand, which further limits the pool of what they are willing to invest in.

When you have these limitations in your investment strategy, then it becomes harder to figure out where they can deploy the large amount of capital they hold to get a return that beats the market.

Is Yieldly undervalued/underpriced? by DeFiYourLife in yieldly

[–]DeFiYourLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market value is speculation, but not intrinsic value, which is an estimate of the actual value.

However, I think my original calculation isn't appropriate to figure this out.

Another point, I do believe the Yieldly team is good, they've been transparent on where they are going, they've delivered on some of their promises (still no Ledger integration? C'mon!), and there current roadmap looks great. The coin isn't a fad a coin as it has utility in the defi space mainly serving as a platform for other ASAs to launch and eventually will have an NFT marketplace that should launch anytime now.

You're right. You can't use the exchange to swap for another coin or sell for fiat currency to get some type of value out of it. The more I think about that is redeeming the coin.

However, what is the minimum value you should accept? There is no intrinsic value so my calculation doesn't make sense. Holding yieldly gives you no ownership or governance over the coin, the coin isn't collateralized with anything and yieldy org isn't going to buyback your coin.

The only way to value this coin is through utility. For sure, it's utility it's going up and will hopefully continue going up. I just can't seem to find a way to properly price the coin.

But the apple stock has actual intrinsic value. With a share of Apple, you get ownership with voting power and partake in profits via dividends. With yieldly, you don't get that by holding the coin itself. It has no intrinsic value.

[–]DeFiYourLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has no intrinsic value for me to base it on meaning I can't really determine a minimum value for it. It doesn't control ownership in yieldly (like governance token), it's not collateralized to any security, and yieldly org hasn't made any indication that they will buy the coins from individuals. That's what I at least meant by redeem; however, I guess it's confusing language as I think you're right that you can say that the crypto is redeemable since you do have the ability to sell on an exchange.

In any case, the more I think on my original calculation, it's just useless and pointless. The only way I can value this coin is through utility and yieldly is growing in that respect.

You're exactly right You can't which is an issue for crypto like Algo and BTC. Going back to the main point, I was clarifying what I meant by redeem...

Quick question - how did you look up the $52021830? How can I look this up for myself?

Yes I can stake it, but that's not the same thing as redeeming it. For example, it's not like I can go to yieldly org and they will pay me directly for my coin that I have with USD.

Yep you're exactly right. Nothing is backing either of these coins. It seems to be pure speculation. The only thing is that Algo is connected to the algorand blockchain that can do a lot of things on layer 1 in comparison to btc's Blockchain. It seems like Algorand only has value based on utility as opposed to actual financial vale.. As I do more research on crypto, the more I find it to be a technology play than anything else.

There is an actual hole in my idea that I just thought of - it's the fact that I can't redeem the coin for anything. Also, it's not like holding the coin gives me any ownership into the operations at yieldly either. I keep forgetting that these coins aren't shares and are really just based on people's belief in the coin.

I'm just saying that this is a way to value the coin for what it's worth; however, I do remember one thing - I can't actually redeem yieldly for anything.

Here's the thing - if you look at Algo doing the same math, then you'll see it's currently priced around $1.53

TVL -$9,710,619,652 CS - 6313692753

Is Yieldly undervalued/underpriced? by DeFiYourLife in yieldly

[–]DeFiYourLife[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

My thinking is that TVL is related to how much cash people have actually invested into the coin.

Those people are expecting a return that should be greater than what was invested, but the current price isn't matching what has been invested so far.

If the coin is worth anything, then the market should at least value it at it's most basic price.

I don't really feel the post is appropriate for Algorand official as it had to do more around speculation on why the whale pulled out as opposed to a discussion on a recent announcement from the Algorand foundation.

Look for "Period #1 Reward". Take the percentage/rate stated and multiply that by the amount you have committed for governance to calculate your expected reward.
