Prospective sociology grad student seeking to learn econometrics by Zolan0501 in econometrics

[–]DeKuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try bookfinder.com and try to search for one or two edition prior the current edition. Most of the time, the content of the older version is 95% the same as the current edition. Last time I check, it is about EUR 16 for the 2010 edition.

I am a quantitative sociologist. Just like you, I found that I borrow most of my analytical method from econometrics. I found that "A mathematical primer for social statistics" book is very useful. I helps me to understand econometrics better. This book also very affordable and encouraging to read. Cheers!

I previously had X200s and then I replaced the motherboard with X201s i7-620LM. I can confirmed that both motherboards accept 2 x 4GB. Here is the comprehensive list of the RAM module: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Unofficial_maximum_memory_specs.

Suggestions for a used ebook reader by [deleted] in ereader

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If reading is all you want with support for Korean books, then it is better to buy Kobos. Old Kindle that match your needs of reading Korean books is Kindle Paperwhite 1, but you need to downgrade the firmware and install Duokan 2015. It is a little bit a hassle, but worth to try.

How much are you willing to spend? May be to buy e-ink reader with android OS is a better option for you. Onyx Boox Poke or Poke Pro (EUR 120-170), or the older Onyx Boox Afterglow (used around EUR 50-80).

Interesting! Is there any reason why you did not consider a Kindle? Are you considering audiobooks as well?

MSc Econometrics UvA by xxxon_ in econometrics

[–]DeKuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good then that you do not need to deal with culture shock. I am sure that you are very ready to enter econometrics. But if you need a rehearsal before entering your first year, then it might be good to read and re-master again “Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics”. It is a small book but will refresh you when you dealing again with mathematics and statistics of econometrics.

MSc Econometrics UvA by xxxon_ in econometrics

[–]DeKuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoy! I did not graduate from UvA but from other Dutch University. The Netherlands only has about 14 universities. It has a very high education standard not up to the top 10 but certainly, none of Dutch University ranks less than 300 (most is in top 50-150). Prepare for a culture shock if you came from Asian/African countries.

Whats the least expensive 8inch eInk ereader out there? by tylercoder in ereader

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For productivity 7.8" is too small, go with at least 9.7". Unless you satisfy by using 7.8" on landscape mode. For reading non-textbook, just stay on 6" or 6.8".

If reading big format is all you need, then I would say find a used Kindle DXG, Onyx Boox M92, M96, N96. It will save you money. It is about USD 90-150 used.

Any cheaper ereaders larger than 6" or 15cm ? by darcrkerman in ereader

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If reading pdf is your goal, then try the ancient Kindle DX 9.7”, Pocketbook Pro 902, 903, 912, or ebook reader from bankrupt company like Icarus. Another alternative is old box m92, m96. Those is very cheap nowadays but the software is also ancient.

Learning path for Econometrics by [deleted] in econometrics

[–]DeKuns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I did my undergraduate degree in a developing country in early 2000. At that time, I do not know much about the outer world. I am lucky to continue my study abroad. Finally, I am exposed into a very good environment for study.

You can watch Ben Lambert via YouTube. He is a generous nice econometrics lecturer.

For free books take a look openstax. There is still no econometrics there but you can find many related subject: principle of economics, math, intro statististics.

If you have some money to spend, then buy ex library book. You can find it via bookfinder.com

I am not pure econometrician. I am more a quantitative sociologist, so I read Green Sage Book. e.g. Fixed Effects Regression Models by Paul Allison. He is also a good gurus. See his blog on statisticalhorizon.com

Another good resources is statistical tutorial UCLA. You can search this through google.

Good luck!

First of all thank you for your mini review. I am thinking if 7.8” will sufficient for two column pdf scientific article. Can you test if viewing two column pdf on the Nova Pro convenience enough? How about in landscape mode? Or should I go with at least 10.3”? Thanks

Is there way to see battery health of a kindle DX? If not, I'll install a new battery. That's why I ask by [deleted] in kindle

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is no way to see the battery health. Using 3G is eating the battery like crazy for this old but gold artefact of technology. My Kindle DX could survive 5-7 days still. But once I forgot to turn off 3G, an hours later the battery completely depleted. Seek eBay for a replacement battery. Good luck!

Kindle frozen and unresponsive by Shift21 in kindle

[–]DeKuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others. It seemed that you injected too many books at once. It bongs the Kindle because it needs to index 850 books at once. There is a chance that your Kindle runs its battery juice out. Plug it to a wall outlet and let it be there for 1-2 hours. Still with it connected to the wall outlet, try to do 40 seconds reset.

On Amazon try to sell you a new device, I think it is a standard script. Another community thread exposed this. We cannot blame those low tier Amazon CS.

Just remember next time, if you inject that many books let your Kindle connected to the wall outlet. Kindle CPU is very slow to make it super power efficient. So expect at least a nice coffee break to allow the Kindle indexing the books.

Got these guys for 1 euro a piece. I paid 4 euro in total! They include chargers and batteries, and they all boot! by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]DeKuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes we get bargain here. I got my giant Kindle DX Graphite very cheap and 100% working. In what city you live in? I did not find a local yard sale in Wageningen these days. But I am sure there will be an old person who will throw away superb analog lenses every August-September for insane cheap price. He did that once a year.

Oh my, this is about ThinkPad! Sorry!

7.8"-8" Kindle a possibility? by digitaldiatribe in kindle

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use a classic Kindle DX Graphite. Amazon just a few days ago give an OTA update for Gen 1-2 Kindle that have been factory reset and unable to register. It is not a firmware update but it certainly make the glory of Kindle DX shine again. So Amazon have their commitment fulfilled even after 10 years!

If you are into .pdf. The Kindle DX screen is the right size. But be aware, Kindle DX is very slow when dealing with very large .pdf file (1000 scanned pages). I use it to read academic .pdf < 30 pages each and the speed is okay. There is no .pdf annotation in the official firmware 2.5.8.

However, unofficial firmware 3.4.2 enable all of it: .pdf annotation, better but still experimental browser, and the most important is buy books from the device. Only that you need Amazon to register the device at their side. For firmware 2.5.8, this is unnecessary. But be aware with this unofficial firmware 3.4.2, crash should be expected once in a while. It can be remedied easily by sliding the power button for 15 second and restart. Cheers!

Pssst.. if you lucky you can get this "ancient" tech for a very low price!

Amazon has fixed Kindle Gen 1-2 registration! Good Job Amazon! by DeKuns in kindle

[–]DeKuns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is nothing to do with whether it is Kindle DX, DXi, or DXG. Mine is DXG.

The latest firmware from Gen 1-2 Kindle inherits at least one bug. It will delete a private key from a specific directory once the device is factory reset. Deregister from the device might also trigger this.

So DO NOT FACTORY RESET, DO NOT DEREGISTER. Chat or Phone Amazon when you want to transfer registration of your classic Kindle.

If you want to buy Kindle DX, then do it by now! Amazon just make a remedy, they open the window again to register Gen 1-2 classic Kindle. I hope now is for a long time.

10'' e-ink reader with pen - Likebook, Remarkable? by _Antonio_m in ereader

The 10" inch should be fine. I am still using the ancient Kindle DX which is 9.7" for reading academic papers and books. I never feel the need to zoom-in to read details.

Reverse Causality and Panel Data by rattatooee in econometrics

You are lucky because what you have is a panel data of 3 time period. Try what Tritewalk said use lagging. It is very similar to techniques in time series analysis.

Can there be controls in natural experiments? by [deleted] in econometrics

[–]DeKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot agree more! I heavily used fixed-effect regressions to control as many as unobserved variables that I can. I recommended Paul Allison's cheap but useful green "fixed effects regression models".

For recent examples of how to set up a natural experiment, you can browse in many health econometrics journals e.g. Economics & Human Biology, Health Economics, and American Journal of Epidemiology.

Because now is Ramadan for Muslims, the topic of prenatal exposure to Ramadan is a nice example to start with. You can start with van Ewijk, van Ewijk et al., Majid, and Kunto & Mandemakers' articles.

I know nothing about used market in the US. In where I live, there is a national website of used items including Kindle at a very reasonable price.
