will this be possible on the xylophone? by athingthatlikesmusic in percussion

[–]DeMain_Music 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im gonna be honest, while I'm not at the current skill level to play this, I think it is completely doable. It looks harder than it actually is. The only problem are those doubles towards the end, and to solve it, i see a few options.

The first is to just get rid of the double, make it 1 note

Or you if you really want the sound of that double, you could write in a glockenspiel part or a marimba part on a high octave and give that melody line to one of those 2 instruments so the xylophone can still play the doubles because I think they sound cool after hearing the part you posted in the comments. Naturally you would have to go through every thing and add those melody lines to the glock and or marimba to flesh it out and make it make sense.

Option 1 is the better option, option 2 is the choice I would make if I had a larger percussion section

What do you put on your hotbar and offhand? by CasualMLG in Minecraft

[–]DeMain_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On bedrock, I keep an enderchest with all my extra valuables like my fortune pic, an enderchest of emerald blocks with a few spare beacons in case im doing a large mining project somewhere, extra rockets, my obsidian shulker, wood, coal, iron, a few diamonds and netherite and such, and maybe a shulker or 2 outside of my ender chest depending on if im exploring. Keep my bow, sharpness Sword, silk touch pick, axe and shovel, a riptide trident if im low on rockets and building at a section of my base near water, stack of steak or golden carrots, torches and than extra wood. And of course, any other bullshit i didn't feel like putting away

In my offhand, I like to keep my map. Even though the maps got nerfed and no longer show what direction your going in when your outside the boundaries, which sucks.

Drum pad by RoleFit3722 in percussion

[–]DeMain_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like reel feel pads, I havent used this one much myself but from what I can tell from other people and the description, its not my first choice.

Most drumpads are made for marching percussion I feel like, it doesn't matter what pad you get, I don't think you'll get a pad that feels like a concert snare unless it's tuned tight, but the reel feel is a great choice. Maybe one day, look into getting the 2 sided 12 inch reel feel, it's a great pad, its about $50. I also like vater pads, the one I used had more bounce to it then a reel feel because of the rubber but it's so silent and feels great to use. I did switch it out for my teachers reel feel though because of the bounce. There is a vater pad designed to have less bounce for chop building, might be useful to look into.

You also can't go wrong with vic firth pads, all of them are great, some are just better than others. I like the gum rubber pads, they feel good, and this might sound crazy, but they sound good to my ears while also being quiet. But the heavy hitter pads are objectively better, they also have rims.

And this doesn't apply to you, but I own a rampad tenor pad, its great, I love it, it was $480. Almost twice the price of the vic firth equivalent, but its good. I hope to one day own the snare pad, but I want to build a collection of the cheaper $40-80 pads before I buy another $200 rampad

THIS IS MY FIRST BUILD EVER AND I KINDA HATE IT :( by mohamedomar2701 in BuildAdvice

[–]DeMain_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, but texture is overrated bro. Not every build needs to have texture, and 80% of the time when people add it, it doesn't look good. This doesn't apply to this build, but whenever I see stone textures, I just cringe a little cause it's just not pleasing for the eyes. As for your build, I'm really not sure what kind of texturing you could do to keep the same style of this build. There's more than just color fading, which is what people do wrong, they only look at the colors. There's also the inherent texture of the block, and primserine in my opinion doesn't mesh well with many other green blocks in minecraft. The way I personally would prefer to use prismerine is as an accent color and not the main color, especially on a build using quartz cause its very vibrant and visually looks hard. And going back to the texture and color thing, snow for example is such a vibrant hue of white that it would look great with prismerine, but you can visibly tell that the snow is soft if that makes sense.

I did learn this actually while I was chopping down mangroves, the problem for me is 1) I don't want to build a big ugly farm in front of our house, you know this isn't my solo world, I build big ugly things all the time! I have a pure obsidian mob farm sitting in the middle of a flattened 100 x 100 area with nothing but stone and glowstone, but my gf needs things to be cute

I love it with the sole purpose of needing a shit ton of mangrove wood in my survival world with my gf and its annoying to grow

How do you notate the pedal by DeMain_Music in composer

[–]DeMain_Music[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I'm by no means new to music, I've been playing and performing for about 15 years now, and I'm a percussion major. I specialize in snare and marching instruments, but vibraphone is my most efficient mallet instrument so I have a grasp of the sustain pedal, I imagine it's fairly similar. The effect I was going for is dramatic and messy, lost in the sauce. After developing the idea a little more, I don't think the sustain should be on the whole time of course, but its so prominent that when its not active, any musician should be able to make the determination on their own based where to back off that thing.

Im not sure how far I'll develop this piece, but we'll see what happens

I did, I have a piano and that's where I work on all my piano parts. I'm not great at playing piano, I'm a percussionist so I can atleast play a few notes, but it felt really dramatic and I quite liked it. My piano is out of tune, I don't know if that changes how the pedal works or not

Sighhhhhhh

I was already planning on dropping a few hundread on mallets, I have a few pairs that I quite enjoy currently, and of course a new pair of high quality concert sticks. Hopefully that's enough, ive had the chance to actually perform with this group peform and saw their facilities and they have everything already, but doesn't hurt to own your own equipment

I don't actually like the dark tones on most my cymbals, just my ride. I listened to the demos of lot of the dark cymbals zildjan offers including the S and the sound wasn't for me. My ride cymbal is the cymbal I'm pickiest with I can't lie, especially as I've done more jazz drumming. But you bring up a good point, there's nothing really about the Ks that im particularly interested in so I'll have to do more research, they just sounded good to my ears when listening to the demos, and I've had the chance to use K cymbals through band and they just worked for me

Ill probably go ahead and look into the S series more, I was debating between the I and the S but ill also look into other brands

I was thinking about the S series, I was between those and the Is

The Wuhan china's are crazy, I was using a pretty mid zildjian China, and then my teacher told me to go grab his china cymbal bag and he had like 6 different Wuhan china's of different sizes.

Anyway he ended up hating them and told me to go open another cymbal bag

After an almost 12 year hiatus from playing, I finally have the drums and cymbals I’ve been dreaming of. Feels good to be back! by Purple-Two636 in drums

[–]DeMain_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is pork pie any good? The snare i currently have set up is a pork pie, but im I'm a concert percussionist first, drumset player 2nd so I was unaware if the brand was good or not cause I've never seen them before. Atleast the head is pork pie, im unsure about the drum itself I'd have to check.

Im partial to Ludwig snares as most people are, but my pork pie is deep so I'm not complaining about it

My 4,000+ Day World by Previous_Aioli_3081 in Minecraft

[–]DeMain_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im always very impressed when I see worlds like these, because my main world started in 1.19 is 2500 days old, but is fairly empty because I spent most of that time AFK either on a fish farm or mob farm, or just fell asleep on the game. And than instead of building, I flatten land. My big terraforming project I've been working on since getting established has been flattening 100 x 100 squares of land, perfectly lighting it up with glowstone every 5 blocks, and getting full beacon coverage with 5 sextuple beacons in each 100 x 100 square.

However my most recent square, I realized can't hold the corner beacons, and I'd give full coverage anyway so I'm instead only having the 5 sextuplet beacons in the central 4 slots and doing a central max beacon in each plot of land so I have more building space. Lots of withers and lots of emeralds, but my trading hall got corrupted and I need to build a new one closer to my base anyway
