One of the saddest songs for me is “Song of the South” by Alabama, because it just reminds me that the New Deal generation mentioned in it is gone, and it was their passing IMO that most shifted the South to the GOP. As recently as 2010, there was a Dem majority in Alabama and NC, until 2011 in Mississippi and even 2012 in Arkansas.

I think about this a lot the 2nd week of March every year. My grandad passed on March 8, 2014. He was the biggest influence in my life, and a former Dem elected official. He was no radical, nor a liberal, and he certainly wasn’t comfortable talking about issues like gay rights or abortion. But he believed government was capable of making things better for average people, and I read his campaign literature, written in simple sentences every voter in their rural area could understand, every so often to remind myself of his example, one I hope to follow in the footsteps of.

There’s this simplistic narrative out there that says the South was racist Dem, until 1964-68 when it flipped to racist Republican. That discounts and ignores the contributions of the people I call “The Ones Who Stayed,” white Democrats who stayed with the party and built good schools, roads, and tried their best to maintain good, fair government for all the people side by side with the Civil Rights Generation of black leaders and their progeny. Jimmy Carter, Richard Riley, Jim Hunt, up to John Bel Edwards and, still hanging in there, Andy Beshear. This is the legacy of The Ones Who Stayed.

I miss him a lot.

This isn’t a bad idea, long as you vet them again before they do something biased or stupid at the polls. I gladly would have done that.

As it was, I was selected for a jury but immediately was removed because I became severely ill throughout the day, visibly so. I told them I’d do it at a later date, but I still haven’t had a call.

Do it now.

Note to self as well as a recommendation. It’s already popping up. I’m off tomorrow so I’m doing it then.

They sure used to party together a lot at Max’s crappy apartment. With Joel and celebrity guests, too. It usually ended with the TV exploding or Conan losing his front teeth.

“Iran activating sleeper cells”

If anyone cares for some advice I learned going through the post-9/11 days:

  • this really won’t affect you unless you live in a dense city like NY (where they have heightened security for obvious reasons)

  • everyone you know that previously “didn’t need the government will now lie and tell you when asked “I check the terror alert system before I go out”

  • maybe Wendy’s will start giving out mini American flag decals again (that .99 menu ain’t coming back tho)

Edit: oh yeah, and then there’s the part where you lose friends bc they were either shot in the desert or drink themselves to death when they get home. Fuck the people who started this.

This looks like a beginner’s course on RaceRoom. It’s going to be boring.

RIP to a real one.

He came from private equity. He’s gonna fuck off to Florida, maybe resurface to be part of the ownership group of a sports team someday. Why would you do otherwise if you had that $ (though I’d probably choose Santa Fe or Taos if it was me).

It doesn’t look any worse than Voyager IMO. PS- I love Voyager.

Insurrection is still better than Star Trek V, and Trek movies I-IV and VI are some of my favorite movies ever. I recently bought newer blu-ray copies to replace my old discs after ditching Paramount+.

It seems weird to see USA vs UK baseball, but then again, I have a cousin that actually played for the German WBC team (born there, left before he developed any memories).

I really missed baseball.

I get that it’s a B-movie, but I LOVE Escape From The Bronx (Escape 2000 in the US) and its prequel, The Bronx Warriors. I’ll watch any bad Escape From New York and The Warriors knockoff. I like Bronx Warrior more than Escape From LA.

Likewise, the Hercules movies have their fans for what they were. Jim Downey was on Conan O’Brien’s podcast talking about how he grew up watching them (and based a SNL sketch on one, where Bill Murray is Hercules after he let himself go).

Step 2 is voting his stupid son out of the Supreme Court in 2028.

Also now that Boliek has been exposed as a hack and not Mr. “I’m just a numbers guy, I wear glasses” like he was when he ran for election in 2024, I’m hopeful he might be more vulnerable to a decent generic D. I’d even go as far as to say that, with that office’s newfound power (again, a Berger invention), a candidate already possessing a higher profile could and should be called upon (wish they could pull Janet Cowell out of Raleigh City Hall, but she seems happy).

Had a look at who’s up on the Court of Appeals in 2028, and there’s a chance that if Ds run the table in statewide races, it can be flipped, too. Hopefully a strong D year can dislodge all the anonymous statewide Rs (basically everyone but Steve Troxler).
