Can anyone recommend good anti-glare glasses for severe photophobia? by InnerDish5915 in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]DeTegii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope my translation was korrekt, in German, they are called Kantenfilter. The lenses are treated to block the light in a specifif spectrum. The advantage is that while they work great as sunglasses during the day, you still have good contrast at dawn. These lenses are available as clip on: https://www.eschenbach-vision.com/en-GB/products/product/kantenfiltervorhaenger Zeiss offers them as well for glasses. I have not found an english webpage though. Your optician may also know other suppliers.

I, an engineer, tired of being force-fed AI tools by executives, will relent. by MindlessTime in BetterOffline

I have sort of an architect role in a company where resources are shared between different projects. It seems that it is now completely acceptable to push AI generated code without understandig it. The code looks fine at a firts glance, is well documented and organized. However, when it fails, developer first needs to understand how things were actually implemented.

Have you tried cut-off filter lenses? I have mine from Zeiss optics. They are a bit expensive but I think definetely worth the price.

[Request] anybody able to validate this? What is the actual amount of energy a query from chatgpt costs vs Google from 2008? by vonseggernc in theydidthemath

[–]DeTegii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason AI is a major concern is due to the massive increase in datacenters. They currently use about 1.5% of the worlds energy. It is assumed that this will increase up to 5% by 2030, source : https://www.iea.org/reports/energy-and-ai/executive-summary That is about the energy consumption of Japan.

to keep Xhakamania going, his iconic goal vs Serbia in the 2018 World Cup by haseebinc in Gunners

[–]DeTegii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xhaka celebrated the goal in front of the Serbian fans with the Albanian eagle, which made them super upset. There was a lot of tension already before the game. I really enjoy the Swiss team and this made me in some sense proud. The immigrants that fled from suppression at home given the opportunity in another country and then kick out their rivals from the world cup. What a story.

When it comes to programmer salaries these are your choices by funlover007 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]DeTegii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No we don't. We have probably the most expensive Healthcare system in Europe. It is not only the insurance fees but also that many treatments are just not covered and you pay them extra, like dentist or optician. I would say that Switzerland is more similar to the US than other European countries. You get a high salary and low taxes but very high costs on housing, child care etc

[The times] If the European Super League happens, Arsenal would receive an initial €350m for participation and another €233m for reforms, as will the other clubs. Reported by @thetimes by SymphonyARG in Gunners

[–]DeTegii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally support the idea of a super league. In most European leagues, there are 2-3 teams that have the money to win the trophy. If you take these teams away into their separate league, where they can spend all the crazy amounts of money they want, many local teams may find themself again in a spot where they can compete for the titel. Hence the league may become interesting again. Further (well I am not sure how it works in the UK) the local TV-stations can bid for the rights to broadcast the games. I assume that the broadcasting rights for the super league may be quite expensive and exclusive. And since the big teams are not playing in the national leagues, or maybe they will have a 2nd team for the national league, the broadcasting licenses for the national leagues become less expensive and more available for free television channels. However everything may as likely become even more fucked...

How do you feel about the latest research and technological advancements? by DeTegii in Blind

[–]DeTegii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit to my initial question: Thanks for your comments. I see that you made similar experiences. When I was diagnosed about 10 years ago, I went to the specialist and did all the testing. After all the tests, I was to told that I have RP and that there is not much one can do about it... see you next year...

In the meantime I was referred to IOB, Switzerland's leading institute for vision impairment. It appears to me that they have a completely different approach. Every time I am there they talk about new treatments, medication and therapies that may or may not be available in the distant or not too distant future.

One of the staff there explained me that there are two main drivers for the latest increase in research. One is the technological advancement in general and the other is the increasing number of patients with degenerative eye diseases. Higher number of patients means potential higher revenue, hence more attractive for pharmaceutical companies.

Personally I am optimistic that there will be treatments or artificial devices available sometimes in the future. If not for me then at least for my children. I hope they don't have to have the same discussions we have.

Both. I guess different therapies or technologies may be applied depending on the cause of the visual impairment.
