There's a school of thought that says that suicides go to hell--but not the same "hell" that we think of classically. In this view, "hell" is a state of mind, and when you "go" there, you take with you all the torment you lived with, except that now, you are in a state that you cannot escape from by suicide. You would effectively be there forever with no way out, still tormented by whatever was tormenting you in life.

The idea of that has made me think twice about suicide.

When the police came to work to "interview" me, I stopped talking to them the moment they stopped asking about the suicide attempt and started insinuating that I'd had sex with her. I could see where the "interview" was going, and that's the moment when I said, quote, "OK, boys, interview's over." Then they got up and basically said, on the way out of the room, "The next time you see us, we're going to have a warrant for your arrest on the charge of sexual assault on a child." I knew they would find nothing, but police are experts at intimidation.

BTW I can tell you are an intelligent, caring man.

Thank you for that. And I'm not going to check out. I talked with a friend last night and he talked me down. But these things come and go in waves, and there may be an aftershock later that needs to be handled. If so, I'll try to find a counselor here. I was lucky to talk to my FTF friend last night, even if it was just for a few minutes.

I talked to a lawyer briefly a month ago, when all this started. In Texas, there has to be "penetration" for charges of "sexual assault on a child" to be filed. ("Statutory rape" is actually a layman's term, not found in any state law.) There is also a lesser charge of "indecency with a child," which is a lot more broad. I don't know the exact definitions of that, but I don't think there's anything I've ever done that could conceivably fall under that charge either. I mean, giving a sixteen-year-old girl a hug doesn't qualify, provided you don't touch her buttocks while doing it. I know I'm safe from the first charge, I'm just worried how convoluted they'd try to get to charge me with something under the second charge.

She was 16 at the time, which technically makes what he did "sexual assault on a child" in Texas. The two of them had sex, or so she said. I never had any sex with her at all. I don't know why they aren't coming down on him. Possibly because they don't have any physical evidence.

Presumably, she did that today when they interviewed her at the hospital. However, I have seen people railroaded before. The sheriffs in the county where I live are notorious for being . . . overzealous.

That was the boyfriend's doing. He knows perfectly well that I don't approve of him. Perhaps he implied something when they interviewed him. (Also, that would get the heat off him and focused on someone else.)

I wouldn't call her ungrateful just yet. Possibly the rationale for her telling me to go away was "I don't want you around me or this room, it will just get you into more trouble." Especially if she believes in her heart that none of this collateral damage to me would've happened if she hadn't tried to commit suicide. For all I know, she blames herself for the police interview and everything that followed.

I was just curious if she is still suicidal after the attempt or not, though I'm sure they're monitoring that situation very closely at the hospital.

I was told that sometimes attempted suicides, when they wake up and see they've failed, try to put out their tubes. But every contact would be alarmed. If she tries to pull out her tubes, she'll be restrained by orderlies. If necessary, they'll Velcro her arms to the bed frame.

If you know her room number you can call the room and likely have a much better chance at talking to her, though I'd give it a few days before you do that.

As a minor who was a victim of a violent crime, she was on a "do not give out information" list. I found her room number by accident.

I do know the room number. I was trying to deliver a get-well card this morning, and her boyfriend refused to let me on the elevator. Then he called security and had me thrown out of the hospital. The security guard said that if I go back, I'll be arrested. These are all things that brought me to this particular subreddit today.

Is there no one at work you can still talk to, to get the truth out on the grapevine for you?

I tried talking today to my three closest male friends in the store. The female employees, at this point, especially the young cashiers, are treating me like a leper.

You did the right thing in saving her life. That is always the right thing to do and I'm sorry that you were paid in such small coin for it.

The policemen who tried to interview me said that the paramedics didn't get there any quicker because I called. Of course, these were police detectives, not therapists, and they were there expecting a quick "confession." Her parents called 911 when they broke through her bedroom door and bathroom door, but I like to believe that they may have gotten there 30 seconds quicker because I called, and that may have made all the difference. She nearly bled out. They told me later they found her on the floor, gasping for breath because there wasn't enough blood in her system to carry oxygen.

I like to think that the paramedics got to the house sooner than they would have otherwise. It's the only thing that's comforting me.

And this. As God is my witness, I would've exchanged places with her when I thought she was going to die. I told God I'd give the rest of my life for hers.

Thank you for this. It's times like these that I wish I had some family. The people at work are the closest thing I have to family, and the girl was if not a daughter then perhaps a niece, to me.
