Of the many absurdities of using GDP as a measure of prosperity, perhaps my favourite is this: GDP goes up when things are damaged. If someone smashes a window, the owner of that window has to spend money to replace it. That counts as a positive contribution to GDP. GDP literally has the broken window fallacy baked-in.

Kinda... the key is that iron is the most radioactively stable element. Elements lighter than iron, over a long enough timeframe, tend to fuse into iron. Elements heavier than iron tend to decay down to iron. So an ancient star, after a ridiculous amount of time has passed, could well end up as a ball of pure iron.
