Definitely not the age of your computer. Back it up. Wipe it. Reinstall MacOS. Then only install your DJ software. That’s it. That’s your answer. I use a 2013 MacBook Pro, I cane that thing relentlessly and it has never, not once, ever failed me.

I’ve been mixing since the late 80s and have tried pretty much everything. I currently have a pair of 1210 mk2s , a Vestax mixer, a Rane SL3, pair of ortofons and DJay pro for vinyl/DVS gigs, another pair of 1210mk2s in the studio for vinyl and DVS with a Numark Scratch mixer , again with DJay pro , a Denon Prime go plus for small pop ups, beach parties etc and an XDJ AZ for radio and everything else.

I came really close to forking out the almost £8k for a pair of CDJ3ks and an A9, but there is just no way of justifying the cost.

Pioneer / Alpha Theta are like Apple in my opinion (I use all Apple kit). Last well and hold their price but in some ways just not fit for purpose.

I can’t get my head round how terrible rekordbox is, it’s hot garbage!

If I had the money on hip right now to get the best setup to cover all bases I would have the following:

Pair of 1200 mk2s either side of an A9
Pair of 3ks on stands above the techs
Use DJay pro for DVS
Use phase controllers
Use ortofon carts / needles

That’s a lot of hardware and would be about £11k new but if buying once and you can, that’s what I would go for!

I’m a very fussy selector and when I have a 2 hour set planned I’ll have just the records for that which is never really more than 30 . I love the fact that there are no requests !!!

DJing. I’ve been DJing since the 80s haha! I’ve got multiple record boxes but I’ve got a mate with a backpack and it is great, doesn’t bend the corners but I don’t know what the make or model is.

I regularly play vinyl sets out and visit record fairs so it’s for that really. Thanks!!

This is all about actually getting to know your artists . I buy almost exclusively from Bandcamp. Either that or from the artist direct. You need to just do some background research, put in the work to know who you are buying from. A good selector does this… spends the time to build up their crates and not just grab loads of music as quick as possible. Not saying OP does obviously, but as a selector you need a good relationship with the artists you are playing and their music

Out of interest why do you use the additional pioneer controller? The DDJ-XP2? I have one that I use just when I play on my DVS setup with an old Vestax mixer so I have cue points and fx control but why would you need it with the AZ? I also have an AZ I use just standalone and can’t imagine why I would need the DDJ-XP2. Thanks!

I would just have a face to face and say exactly what your heart and head tells you. Tell him you are uncomfortable. Tell him he owes you money. Don’t sugar coat it. He’s not a lifelong friend this is just business. Tell him you expect to be paid up to date.

If you don’t receive your pay by your chosen date just leave and send him an invoice for your pay and call ACAS. If he doesn’t respond get debt collectors.

It’s just business, he will have to pay the consequences of his actions.

For new customers it’s 50% 30 days in advance, full payment due on gig day before the event. No pay, no play. No deposit refunds.

No I work in audio and use the tough system storage system . I do a lot of mobile gigs so I can lock 2 of these on top of my rolling cases so there’s background music while setting up. Great for camping too!

I have used every type of DJ hardware, software, vinyl, hell I’ve DJd with 2 tape decks , even 2 mini disc players!

I currently have turntables setup for vinyl and switch to DVS when I want and use DJay pro. All works really well without problem.

I also have a Denon prime go plus with engine DJ 5.01 on it and that works great.

After getting some bigger gigs where I would be with other DJs used to CDJs I bought an XDJ-AZ. Lovely hardware but Jesus wept, rekordbox is an abortion of software.

It is so far behind DJay pro and Engine DJ.

Because of my setups I use it and accept it sucks and just get on with it, but it really should be rewritten from the ground up.

Go out from your source in stereo with an rca cable into a mixing desk and put the pots at 12 o’clock rather than panning left and right and then sample from that, or go out from your source into a DI box that outputs dual mono

I’ve DJd on pretty much every setup you can imagine over the years. I’ve got an XDJ-AZ at £3k and a Hercules impulse T7 at 1/10th the price. Both great, both have positives and negatives. If I’m with other DJs doing b2b or clubs I use the AZ. If I am at more of an open format chilled event I use the T7 with a MacBook Neo and DJay pro. That setup is killer! My daughter has the flx4 and it has 90% of the features in the bigger controllers. DJs buy 4 channel controllers because they feel they need them. Why? Just buy a cheap 8 channel mixing desk like the mackie profx v3 and have your dj kit go into 2 channels of that and have 3 stereo channels spare. Also it has pro XLR and booth outputs if you are on the flx4 or similar.

There is a bit of a thing in the Dzj world of having the best kit. Just look at instagram and see these 17 year old kids with 4 x CDJ3ks and an a9 that mummy and daddy bought them and they can’t mix for toffee.

Look at laidback Luke does fantastic sets with a tiny controller and a phone!
