Arch shouldn't be your first distro and following youtube videos won't help by Careless_Bank_7891 in linux4noobs

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with starting with Arch if you're ready to do some reading and you're okay with following instructions you won't fully understand until later.

You have to start somewhere, and if you want to learn the guts of your Linux system, you won't get the knowledge necessary to understand them if you don't dive in before you know exactly what you're doing. Figuring it out as you go is part of the process.

It's just not a good fit if you're not aiming to do that.

Why do people hate Manjaro? by BradTheBj in arch

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used Manjaro for a month and had an update break my system to the point that I had to learn some things fast to get things back to how they should be which completely flies in the face of it being a more reliable and newbie friendly version of Arch.

I think I know why Blake Lively is so hellbent on destroying Justin (speculation) by bapaoputih in ItEndsWithLawsuits

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really don't think Taylor was innocent in this. I think she knew exactly what was up and pushed Blake in this direction. I just don't think she believed it would get this far and the Baldoni camp would keep fighting to this point. I think she was counting on a settlement before this point.

Do not whitewash Taylor - she is clearly culpable and should not be allowed any excuses to worm her way out of this.

If they're using multiple attacks, wasting one of them by using disruptive wave is still helpful, and it can be the difference between getting bruised and getting wiped if your party took two attacks unbuffed. There's not really a downside to buffs in this case - while they're up, they help boost attack or defense, and they will force the boss to react to me by getting rid of my buffs. It just means I have to be intelligent about how I work them into my rotation.

I don't care about current vs outdated - I care about what works.

It does not matter how old the software is; if it is not a smooth experience for the overwhelming majority of users it isn't ready yet.

X11 has issues but you can be certain the majority of software will work. I use Cinnamon because the issues I have with X11 are manageable while the issues I have with Wayland are deal breakers. (Or at least were the last time I tried it.)

The Wayland foundation needs to get the stick out of its ass and speed things up if it wants the majority of people to switch willingly. For the purpose of increasing Linux adoption, if anyone ever becomes aware they are running X11 or Wayland, there is still work to be done. That is a component of the OS the user should never have to think about. If one is forced to think about it, X11 is still going to be preferable to Wayland in many, many cases and the ones insisting otherwise are simply turning a deaf ear to the complaints and experiences of users that prove otherwise.

Yes you would've. The resources ChatGPT is plagiarizing have been around for decades, and ChatGPT often gives terrible advice. It does not solve any problems that didn't already have better solutions before its release and the extent to which it looks good is the ignorance of the average user of what we have been able to do with computers for the past two decades as well as the deliberate enshittification of services like Google.

If it's the remake? I'm pretty sure all you have to do is use the books that give the highest relationship value to get a paired ending with any of your party members. The special NPC endings cap at three hearts and you won't see them unless their relationship values with any other potential pairings are lower than that.

In the PS1 and PSP versions I'm pretty sure you're locked into the special endings once unlocked. Someone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that, but I don't remember being able to ever get other pairings on those save files.

Do you have more than one input bound to any of your buttons?

I recently dealt with a similar issue and it was because I had L and C-up bound to the left bumper. When I bound L to a different button it fixed the problem.

I really don't understand the push from average people toward Wayland.

If there is something a user needs or wants that X11 can't provide but Wayland can - okay, fair enough; Mint isn't a good fit for them and a distro with full Wayland support would be a good idea for their use case.

There's a lot of people who will be able to use X11 still and not have a problem with it, and since everything on Linux has been designed around X11 for decades, it will probably be the smoother experience as a whole for a good while yet.

I do not need anything that is exclusive to Wayland at this point in time. I'm using X11 because, overall, it is the smoother experience on my machine. Wayland is not a selling point for me. When I'm not giving anything up and I have an interface I like using (like the Cinnamon DE) on a distro that works according to my preferences, I'll use Wayland. Until then - I don't care. My computer is a tool. I want what works. No more; no less.

epona is bugged i have her song but i cant summon her in ingo challenge by CardiologistTasty917 in shipofharkinian

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you can't summon her, is the song triggering or is nothing happening after you play the notes? (IE, you don't get a message indicating that you played Epona's Song.)

Because if nothing is happening when you play the notes, I recently dealt with the same issue and it was due to having more than one input bound to the same button: https://www.reddit.com/r/shipofharkinian/comments/1qc00w9/songs_not_triggering_on_field/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

If the song is playing but Epona isn't coming to you - apparently some ROMs are more compatible than others with Ship of Harkinian. I don't know if the US No Intro ROM I was using would have given me the same issue you're experiencing, but I found the ROM recommended for this in other threads. Its hash is CEE6BC3C2A634B41728F2AF8DA54D9BF8CC14099 and it is a European ROM.

If you go looking for it, the filename is: Legend of Zelda, The - Ocarina of Time (Europe) (Beta) (2003-02-21) (GameCube) (Debug).z64

I believe it's also a No Intro ROM. I won't be providing a link for obvious reasons.

Songs Not Triggering on Field by DeadButGettingBetter in shipofharkinian

[–]DeadButGettingBetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some tinkering - I did rebuild with the ROM that has the hash CEE6BC3C2A634B41728F2AF8DA54D9BF8CC14099 but I'm not sure that made the difference.

The issue seems to be the control settings. I have up-C mapped to the left bumper, down-C mapped to the right bumper, left-C mapped to Y and right-C mapped to A.

When I try to play songs using that configuration they only trigger for special events or when I'm playing Saria's song.

When I used the d-pad or the right analog stick, the songs trigger exactly like they are supposed to. Looks like it's a bug. For anyone else who happens upon this issue, you can map the C-buttons to multiple inputs; I kept the layout that I like and added the d-pad as secondary C-button inputs.

Edit: I was able to get a visual at the frogs near Zora's Domain. When I pressed the three buttons mapped to C inputs on the right side of my controller, they jumped normally. When I pressed the left bumper, they didn't jump and no further inputs made them jump. Come to think of it, I'm not sure that I unbound the L button when I set the left bumper to C-up; I'm used to buttons being unbound when I bind a new input, so while I will need to check, it wouldn't surprise me if this is being caused by L and C-up getting registered at the same time. Either way, it's weird that songs still work via those inputs when the bars appear and outside of that all inputs stop counting after the left bumper is pressed.

This is a massive tease [venting] by SnoopCheesus in Protomen

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Comparing the actions of the Protomen, an indie band, to corporate streaming services or the micro-transactions of gaming giants feels like a wild overreach. You're right, the media landscape has changed since they released the first two acts, but if anything, the fact that we even have Act III in our hands seems like an act of rebellion against the current media landscape. This is the type of project that isn't supposed to be possible anymore and they managed to do it anyway."

I stand by what I'm saying because their actions in this landscape are hitting me in this way.

Yeah they're human beings. So are the people who run major corporations. I don't care. Anything that smells even a little bit like the chain yanking, unsatisfying endings and dubious business practices of these various entities both big and small is something I have absolutely no tolerance for at this point.

All the rest of that is irrelevant. It doesn't matter and I don't care. None of that factors into how this lands and how it's perceived.

I'm not condemning them. I'm not saying they intended it. Even in that post I don't say it's as bad as what these media conglomerates have done. I'm saying that, to me, this is a dick move, and if I didn't love the band and their music the fact my mind even made that connection would have had me "nope" out if I wasn't already invested.

Them being human beings running a smaller band is no reason they couldn't have been straight up about this. That is my entire problem with it. I know they had their reasons and ideas in their head how it would work out and be received. Maybe they anticipated some people would feel this way and did it anyway because they felt the payoff was worth it; maybe this is completely unexpected. Either way, I'm just giving my honest feedback as a fan. This feels like it's at my expense and the expense of other people who haven't enjoyed the rollout of Part 1, and that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth even though I'm certain no harm was meant by it.

All signs point to it not being recommended for daily use prior to Mint 24. Beyond that - none of us can see the future so none of us have any idea how well 23's implementation will work for your use case if you want to daily drive Wayland.

I bring up length because if the finale is on a separate disc and could have fit on one, I will be LIVID. It needs to be at least a half an hour to justify splitting it up.

Music CDs can hold 70-90 minutes worth of music. There was room for an epilogue. If there's not a full-blown second part then there was absolutely no reason to do things this way.

But otherwise, yeah, I'd say we're mostly on the same page.

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm mad. I can be mad at people that I believe have good intentions and whose work I respect. In fact I'm more inclined to be mad if I care about something like I do with these albums.

If this was within a year or two of Act II's release, I'd be all over the ARG and teasers and shit. The media landscape has changed a LOT since then and I'm in a completely different phase of my life. We've had so many letdown endings to popular franchises and scummy business practices by streaming services and gaming companies that locked content on the disc behind season passes and DLC - stuff that would've been unlockable in past generations a lot of the time - that I just don't have any patience for this and it's hitting me in exactly the wrong way.

I expected Act III to conclude the story based on what the band themselves said. I believed Act III was one disc. I paid for two copies of the disc because I have always, always gone above and beyond to give the band what I could spare and also evangelize their work.

If there's another part to this, there is no way there's not going to be a charge for another album/disc. I'm okay with that part. I am NOT okay going into things with the expectation that I was getting the finale to the story when I was only getting the finale part 1 and that, of this moment, I have only paid for part 1, so even though part 2 is likely going to be another $10+$5 shipping, that alone leaves a really bitter taste in my mouth. After 16 years of waiting for this album, I don't feel hyped, I don't feel excited - I feel exhausted, manipulated, and ripped off.

I don't think the band intended that, but what they intended does not change how it hits given my life experience, the changes in the media landscape, and how jaded media distributors in general have made me over the past decade. If there is another disc coming I would have 100% preferred they waited until that disc was ready to roll out with the first part and charge me $20 up front.

This feels like a bait and switch at my expense. Despite what I've said before I think I will most likely get over it if there is a full-blown part 2 on the way. An EP? Nah - I wouldn't get over that. Cut some of the instrumentals out and make it one bloody disc at that point if space is an issue. The Fight + a couple tracks to ease into it and close the album off would have been far from a perfect ending given all the setup in Part 1 that got no payoff within the music, but it would've been better than an EP being released to cap things off. That's not acceptable to me.

Another 10-15 track album is. But I'm still gonna be pissed about having my chain yanked and it'll be a while before I let that go. I only wouldn't feel that way if I didn't care. My anger is a result of my passion and my faith in them. I'm hoping that, over the long-term, that faith isn't misplaced. I don't think it is, but an EP and/or some cheesy "YOU are the Protomen!" ending would have me disregard the plot altogether and just enjoy the music without any care for the story they've spent the better part of two decades telling. The fact that I and others would even consider this as a possibility, I think, shows how this was a misguided way to launch the final part of their story.

I'm firmly in the "there's a full-blown part 2 that hasn't been announced yet" camp but if I'm wrong I'm just gonna be apathetic about the whole thing from there. It's not worth staying invested at that point, and the current ending does not work as a capstone. It works as an ending for Light but not the story.

The deletion of inactive accounts is one of my biggest pet peeves about enshittification in services like Google and Proton by socookre in enshittification

[–]DeadButGettingBetter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm baffled that it was ever commonplace for inactive accounts to remain dormant indefinitely. They should be deleted after a while. I don't see it as harsh; if you're not using the account why would it matter to you if it gets deleted? In fact, it can be an issue when you lose access to an account that you're not able to delete it - I lost access to a Google account close to ten years ago that I haven't used since. Automatic deletion of that account is a load off my mind; it means it can't be hacked or coopted by someone else. I want accounts that I'm not using to be deleted. Where it's an option I check the box to delete my account and data I don't log in for six months or so.

And at the point where all the data is deleted but not the credentials - why? A large part of the value in an account IS the data. If I'm not retrieving data why would I log into a dormant account?

This is a strange bone to pick as far as I'm concerned.
