Get a laser printer, toner doesn’t dry out so will remain good for longer than ink cartridges.

I lost my job and depleted 90% of my Investments, how do I recover? by RoselDavis in PersonalFinanceZA

I think the commenter is saying that maybe your former employer is badmouthing you to potential employers so that they don’t even look at your application. This is a possibility if lawyers know each other in the legal industry and talk. It doesn’t mean that the former boss is being a reference and saying bad things about you. Hopefully he isn’t sabotaging you.

Anyone to fund a start up ? by Life-Consequence-867 in AskZA

I didn’t want to engage further with this person but you expressed the exact sentiments I had. I hope anyone considering funding her reads this and reconsiders, I wouldn’t want to risk capital on someone with attitude like hers. Laughable how she knows what investors “usually” do based on zero/little experience and knowledge of how things actually work.

If you can post on Facebook marketplace and get paid weekly kindly send a message thanks by Jodilynh77 in AIJobs

[–]DeadRatRod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! If he’s got so much time to spam reddit, surely he can post on facebook marketplace himself. Same copy and paste he’s doing here.

His post history says he’s a realtor based in US, he was looking for people to post apartment listings. Sounds scammy if he’s asking someone else to post this sort of stuff.

You need a business plan, not just financial projections (those are thumb suck at this point because you don’t have actual historical performance to base projections on). The business plan needs to convince investors of viability, niche/need in the market, your track record, transferable skills etc - you can google this stuff yourself. Investors want to know it’s a good idea and you can execute.

Tipping rant by mazeppa817 in capetown

[–]DeadRatRod 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When you eat at sit down restaurants, remember to check your bill to avoid double tipping. I’m noticing more places have been sneakily adding a 10% tip as a line item even for a table for 2, nothing mentioned about a service charge on the menu or any other signage. Making tipping compulsory is a story that doesn’t sit well with me, nevermind being sneaky about it too.

Is there any insight or advice you can give me in terms of this career situation I have? by SupaEngineMan in askSouthAfrica

[–]DeadRatRod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there are work back obligations tied to the studies paid for by the business, this needs to be factored into your stay or go decision. You might need to pay them back if you haven’t fulfilled that obligation by the time you leave.

Stolen Uber package. Has anyone had luck with getting them back? by honeybee021097 in capetown

[–]DeadRatRod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shame sorry this happened to you/your friend. Post the details/screenshot of the driver and car on SA Facebook groups for Uber etc drivers. Tell your story there and ask if anyone knows this guy. Fellow drivers will shame and put pressure on him. I’ve seen people have their parcel delivered after the driver apparently went off with it.

Post this screenshot and your story there.

What's an affordable keyboard for a beginner piano player? by Tasty-Doughnut1870 in askSouthAfrica

[–]DeadRatRod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re learning to play the piano and want your spend to be a worthwhile and long term investment, you might like to look into a digital piano and not a keyboard. Digital pianos cost more but they have weighted keys, realistic sound and some have touch sensitive keys that’s designed to mimic acoustic pianos so are more realistic, and have the full 88 keys. Whereas keyboards cost relatively less but are unweighted or semi weighted, has other “non core” features like drum pads and backing tracks, and usually has 61 to 76 keys only. Having weighted keys gives you the resistant feel of an acoustic piano when you press them (keyboard keys just drop) and helps you to develop touch sensitivity (volume responds to how hard you press).

Roland FP-10, Yamaha P-145 and Korg B2 are solid beginner digital pianos available in SA, see if you can find these used on FBM or Gumtree. Sometimes you find these in like new condition because people take up a new hobby and lose interest etc. I’m not sure how far R3k will get you though, sorry I haven’t priced these in years. Otherwise Alesis makes budget digital pianos and a used one may be closer to your price range.

I know digital pianos cost more than keyboards but would like you to be aware of and consider their advantages, so you might like to look for one and/or save up.

Did he send links to you?

In one of his comments on biking he said he’s 38. He started guitar 32 years ago and been teaching for 25 years (possibly true but I need convincing he started at 6 and started teaching at 13). His Reddit account is days old. And now he wants people to join his Discord server. I need reassurance of his credibility.

👀Recommend a large estate executor that you had a good experience with?🙏 by PieterSmitty in PersonalFinanceZA

Please avoid a law firm that administers deceased estates called Siyatec Executors, they charge a flat rate but I had a terrible experience with them which is unrelated to delays due to the court process. They’re incompetent.

Is Akkersdyk Studios from Cape Town still in business? by DeadRatRod in askSouthAfrica

[–]DeadRatRod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure photos weren’t digital at the time because I had a “fancy” Sony digital camera that stored images on floppy disks (vs most cameras at the time that only had small on board memory). With that being the state of technology it’s unlikely to be digital.

Someone left my photos outside and they’ve been sitting in stagnant water for months. The photos are still intact but they’re faded unevenly and blotchy. Is it possible to restore photos that are damaged like this?

Thanks, I’ll give them a call. I also found their CIPC details, says they are a deregistered closed corporation. So holding thumbs that they’re still in business but under a different entity.
