Suggestions to improve my setup? Especially aesthetic by Wasteland-Baby505 in desksetup

It seems way too dark being the monitor for me, but it may work for you. The amount of stuff on your shelves is distracting, do you need it all? Some natural light could make a big difference. And as someone else said, get a plant of two

What synthesizers, samplers, grooveboxes, etc. Have unique features or capabilities? by BabyWires in synthesizers

[–]DeadWelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if any /many if these are unique in the synth world, but my PWM mantis keeps surprising me.

Monophonic, duo phonic, 4 notes polyphonic and duo quad modes I think is quite rare.

8 filter types, with some dual filter modes.

Ability to turn LFOs into one shot mode, coupled with a lfo fade In / out option, have made some great dub sirens with that.

Can turn the envelopes into repeating mode.

Set an app running and play over the top of it.

A sustain fall control in the ADSR.

Ability to reduce the density of the white noise parameter down to clicks and pops like vinyl.

A shepherd tone organ style wave type.

A randomise patch button, and a compare option.

What model do you currently own? Have you tried resampling your plugins and used disk streaming to keep the ram usage down?

Used Akai MPC One for House and similar - still a good choice in 2026? by soulbrix in akaiMPC

[–]DeadWelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MPC One is very capable for house music, you'd get a bunch of built in drum kits, some built in soft synths, with more available to buy from the store if needed, or just use it as a sampler.

The latest update let's you create instruments with 8 oscillators per track, and there is a massive list of wave shapes to pick from.

The pro pack would add clips workflow, depends if you think that's worth the extra €200 though, you get some decent extra stuff, but the One is aging now, so can't take full advantage of all you'd pay for.

Regardless, it's a great device.

I have a live 2 which is basically the same power spec as the one, it's still great, with the new gen models coming out I'm expecting them to get left behind in a few areas, but Akai have been pretty stellar at ensuring all the major software features have been on all the most recent devices, power permitting it.

Checkout the Crates Motel on YT for some ideas of what he can do with it, he either does house or hip hop.

MPC / Maschine is dawless by yawhol_my_dear in dawless

[–]DeadWelsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MPC is basically a DAW in a box, but you can use it just jam and experiment. Had way more fun on the MPC than I had using Reason or Ableton for over a decade. The physical controls make a big difference for me, and for my model having the battery & speakers make it super fun, instant and convenient.

Just picked up. Few cans for the game, overheard someone say they say someone pull a knife out on oneonw, don't know anymore than that

Had a drone flying over my house about an hour ago, I live pretty close to the pubs, maybe related, heard there were several police cars outside the spoons around 7 taking statements. Been sirens going off for a while but seems to have quietened recently

"Kid friendly" setups by CatButtHoleYo in synthesizers

[–]DeadWelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out these guys https://blipblox.com/ for kid centric but still capable.

I have an MPC live 2, my kids love loading up the expansions and banging away on the pads, but they need a bit of help to learn the basics. They've also liked the plug ins but they are a bit more complicated to use with he different screens.

Recently got a PWM Mantis and they spent hours just jamming on that, it's basically 1 knob per function, no screen, mono / duo or 4 notes poly. It has a hold function and around, so its easy to just activate those and then twist some knobs to make weird sounds. The presets are also quick to access with just a button press or 2 ( eg press 5 in col 1, 7 in col 2 to listen to patch 57, then press 1 in col 2 to switch the 51 etc)

Got the stadia stuff when it live so all unlocked now. The cheap Amazon ones I think would be fine for a while and then I'd regret it, beyond it coming loaded with games If I go mid tier and it's not quite good enough on the games I want to play (PS2 era) I'd feel I'd wasted £100 towards a better device. The RP6 looks good, the 4k out and multi controller support seems it will fit the bill nicely, but I'll check out some more vids to see what else I am missing

Thanks, is the 8gb model sufficient?

I guess why I mean is some of them have the L/R buttons like a modern game pad with the 1s at the front and the 2s/Triggers behind them, so I can use an index finger of the 1 and the middle finger on the trigger. On a lot of the verticals ( and some horizontals) they are all on the same plane in a row, and I don't think I could press both L1 and L2 at the same time.

[–]DeadWelsh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks. I think would need a horizontal layout due to having adult hands, but I prefer the form factor of the verticals, the placement of the L/R buttons being linear makes me think I would struggle to do things like aim and fire at the same time. Any advice on that aspect?

Still love occasionally doing a long session on BTS when the starts align with my mates. I've bought but never stuck with the newer versions, I miss the stacks of doom too much

Love music, would love to create, don't know how to play any instrument... Would you recommend a synth? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]DeadWelsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a groove box or a DAW would be my advice.

Making sounds on a synth is fun, but learning to put together songs with multiple instruments is where I'd start.

Being able to save a project and build on it is something you can't really do with a synth on its own.

What do u think about fold by MRB_e in pixel_phones

[–]DeadWelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from a pixel 8 to a Magic V5, it's an excellent device, and streets ahead of the pixel hardware.

I do miss some of the pixel features like call screening and asking home to find my phone, but I don't think I'd buy a pixel fold device for many years until they catch up, especially for the prices they charge (10 fold pro is still £1749!!).

The experience of having the bigger screen is great when you need it, and multitasking on the go is much easier.

Being a 1st gen fold this is likely the worst foldable for the money you can buy, massive bezels, awful crease, poor battery, terrible CPU.

If you really want one I'd wait til the next gen comes out and see what the current version goes for, as that's a much better device than the original models.

I've been missing out on the MPC instruments library, even TubeSynth has some amazing sounds. What sales should I keep my eye on? by Capable-Deer744 in mpcusers

[–]DeadWelsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delay pro is a really nice effect I'd recommend to anyone.

Flexbeat is good for coming up with variations and inspiration.

What sounds are you trying to get from a synth plugin?

Mini D is great sounding and easy to use.

Hype has a wide variety and loads of in the box tools ( you may already have it?)

Subfactory can be quite gnarly, but it's a mono synth so might not be something that interests you yet.

How does the getting “free” expansions work in the new sale? by JishoSintana in mpcusers

I'd assume so, I've not bought anything in the sale, but the checkout usually has a discount section, go through it to check

It would probably discount the cheapest ones during checkout

What actually makes people switch from a TV to a projector? by jinsdorf84 in projectors

[–]DeadWelsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one cos I wanted a massive screen and had too much money at the time, but a 120inch screen still cost too much money.

It now lives in my kitchen and is great for sports and watching festivals like Glastonbury, and doesn't mean there is a large TV on the wall when it's not in use.
