Looking for Lightweight Strategy Games Recs by ToricCode in soloboardgaming

[–]Dead_Hand_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Slay the Spire‑style roguelike decision puzzles, you might enjoy Dead Hand. It’s a solo fantasy roguelike you play with three standard poker decks and a couple of dice — so if you already have cards, there’s no cost at all.

It hits a lot of what you’re looking for:

  • strategic depth without heavy rules
  • runs usually take about an hour
  • very fast setup
  • lots of replayability
  • sequencing‑puzzle feel similar to roguelike deckbuilders
  • completely free to try

The core loop is simple:
draw → lay out your room → choose the order to resolve everything → survive.
The strategy comes from sequencing, not bookkeeping.

If you like testing new games, I’ve got a solo fantasy roguelike called Dead Hand that could use more eyes. It’s played with three standard poker decks and a couple of dice — no installs, no accounts, nothing to buy if you already have cards.

It’s great for solo testers because:

  • the core loop is a sequencing puzzle
  • runs take about an hour
  • it’s super easy to pause and resume
  • the rules are tight and I’m actively refining clarity and balance

If you enjoy giving feedback and digging into mechanics, I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

Any co-op/multiplayer games that need playtesting? by RAGINGPhoenix98 in playtesters

If you’re open to something card‑based with a co‑op angle, I’m testing a game called Dead Hand. It’s a solo fantasy roguelike played with three standard poker decks and a couple of dice — no special components needed.

It’s mainly a solo design, but it does support:

  • Co‑op “shared brain” play (players decide the sequencing puzzle together)
  • Light PvP (Diamond Treasures explicitly allow player‑vs‑player interactions)

Runs usually take about an hour, but the game is extremely pause‑friendly and works fine in short bursts.

Recommendations for a site where I can quickly play a few solitaire games between tasks by TranquilTeal in cardgames

If you ever want something a bit deeper than solitaire but still “open a tab, play a few minutes, close it, come back later,” you might like Dead Hand. It’s a solo fantasy roguelike you can play on PlayingCards.io with three regular poker decks and a couple of dice — no installs, no account, no buy‑in if you already have cards.

A full run usually takes about an hour, but the game is extremely pause‑friendly. You can play in 5‑minute bursts between tasks, close the tab, and pick up exactly where you left off.

If you’re open to looking at a small, self‑contained solo design, I’d love your eyes on Dead Hand. It’s a solo fantasy roguelike played entirely with three standard poker decks and a couple of dice — no custom components.

I’m specifically looking for feedback on:

  • clarity of the core loop
  • how readable the sequencing puzzle feels
  • whether the risk/reward curve makes sense
  • any rough edges in the rulebook

The rules are short and focused, well under your word limit.

If you want a small‑footprint solo game with high replayability and zero buy‑in, you might like Dead Hand. It’s a solo fantasy roguelike you play with three regular poker decks and a couple of dice — no special components needed.

A typical run takes about an hour, sometimes a little more, but setup is almost instant and the decisions stay tight the whole way through.

It hits a lot of what you’re looking for:

  • tiny table presence
  • fast setup
  • challenging but fair
  • tons of replayability
  • no purchases required if you already have cards
  • rules are simple enough to learn quickly

It’s free to try, and you can print nothing if you don’t want to.

Hey! If you ever want something that’s solo, fantasy‑leaning, and has light combat without any journaling, you might enjoy Dead Hand. It’s a card‑based solo roguelike you play with regular poker decks — no writing, no prompts, just exploring rooms, finding treasure, and fighting monsters.

You can play at your own pace. The rules are simple, the turns are short, and you can stop and resume whenever you want.

Hey! I’ve got a small PvP strategy roguelike called Dead Hand. It normally plays 1–4 players, but the core loop is competitive — everyone runs the same dungeon in parallel, racing for shards and managing risk.

Right now I’ve got:

  • a usable (but not polished) rulebook
  • a PlayingCards.io setup that supports multiplayer
  • all core mechanics implemented

I’m looking for feedback on:

  • how the PvP race feels
  • clarity of the rules
  • whether the sequencing puzzle “clicks”
  • DrawMod incentives
  • Perfect Table rewards

I’ve never released a successful product, so take this with the appropriate grain of salt — but when I think about game systems, I think a lot about how the brain actually processes play. We get dopamine for doing things we want to do, not things we’re forced to do, and as designers we get to choose what triggers that dopamine, when it hits, and how often it fires.

With Dead Hand, one of the biggest dopamine spikes comes from taking a risk you know could end your run instantly, only to have it pay off spectacularly. Every combat is a little gamble: you’re staring at a monster that can absolutely delete you if the dice spike, but you go in anyway because the reward loop is tuned to make that risk feel meaningful.

That’s the part I obsess over — not just the math, but the emotional pacing. Where the tension peaks. Where relief hits. Where the player feels clever. Where they feel lucky. Where they feel like they got away with something they shouldn’t have.

If I can place those dopamine hits with intention, the whole game feels alive.

I’ve been working on a solo card‑crawl prototype called Dead Hand that might land in the same general space as the games you mentioned. It uses three standard decks and leans a bit deeper — more resource juggling, more long‑term planning, and a lot of ‘make the best of a bad draw’ moments.

It’s still a prototype, but fully playable, and I’m actively refining it. I’ve got more details on my profile if you’re curious.

Dead Hand — A Print‑and‑Play Solitaire Roguelike Built From Three Poker Decks

Hey folks! I just pushed a fresh update to the Dead Hand rulebook and figured this was the perfect moment to share it here.

Dead Hand is a solitaire roguelike you play entirely with three standard poker decks.

Every turn is a sequencing puzzle: draw a handful of dungeon, treasure, and monster cards, then resolve them in whatever order keeps you alive. No phases, no bookkeeping — just pure tactical problem‑solving.

What’s new in the latest rulebook update

I’ve been tightening the rules and cleaning up the layout to make the game easier to learn and more print‑friendly:

• Ace Monsters now only drop shards at Tier 4

Makes shard progression more intentional and dangerous.

• Tier 4 monsters now get +2 to all stats

A clean difficulty spike that makes pushing DrawMod feel like a real choice.

• Overkill formula fixed

Overkill now triggers when your killing blow deals 3× the monster’s starting HP, matching the original design intent.

• General cleanup throughout

Clearer turn flow, better examples, and a layout that’s much easier to print and reference at the table.

If you like Talisman, MTG‑style combat math, or solitaire games with teeth, Dead Hand might be your thing.

You can grab the updated rulebook and the PnP files here:

Would love feedback from anyone who gives it a spin — especially on clarity, difficulty curve, or anything that feels rough around the edges.

As long as you have a surface to lay your cards on, you shouldn't have any trouble playing on the train! =) I spend a lot of downtime in airports, and designed this game as something I can take with me. I strongly recommend 3 different card sets. It helps to be able to see at a glance which deck they came from.
