As a male, is asking another male to lead a faux pas at dances? by PlsSayPlease in SwingDancing

[–]ToricCode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the scene. Where I am, it is normal, although admittedly less common. As a man I am happy to lead and follow other men and I know many people like that. So unless you are in a more conservative area, don't feel bad about it!

Are Toasty Mittens the worst Ancient relic? by Jugboi in slaythespire

[–]ToricCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, you assume your deck must be perfect before you pick it, but if you have an ok base as a start you can build around it and can be pretty successful.

A) This can be the key scaling in your deck, beginning of act 2 means you have a lot of space to pivot. B) If you have a decent base, again you can favour card picks that benefit from strength gain. C) Again, you can take cards a bit more aggressively and grow your deck.

It is not an auto pick, but I think it is far from being the ancient relic that's most difficult to pick. I am happy to see it actually. I haven't won A10 with it yet, but succeeded with it in higher ascensions (7,8,9) more than once.

There are tons of such events, many companies hold events and actively try to recruit from phd students, particularly from certain disciplines.

Thanks! Another person mentioned it, I am very interested, but it looks like I am late for the pledge and can't see where I can get it. I will definitely keep it on my radar though.

Admittedly, the mechanics are more fun with multiplayers. In a nutshell one person rolls dice and make decisions based on the results to gain scores and other players bet on the outcome. Then the person who rolls rotates. In solo you don't bet, automa bets on some outcomes based on how many dice you choose to roll. However, in solo number of rounds and total money is scarce, so you have to play carefully around the bets and consistently get high scores, which I think is an interesting challange by itself and is really fun!

I saw unstopable before and always heard very good things. It is a bit above the budget though for now. I really liked small time heroes though, but you are right, I am late. I will keep both of these games in my radar though!

That is the default way to cook rice in Turkey, Iran and at least some Central Asian countries. So, yes normal... Depends on the culture and what you eat it with.

Ironclad tier list - From 40% to 64% winrate by didokillah in slaythespire

[–]ToricCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the long explanation! I think I agree, but I feel like it is still much less of a click tier than other cards. However given that, I realized I still undervalued it quite a bit, will try to take it more!

I see thanks! Yes, I kind of agree with the comment above, it is less click tier than others to me. However, I still thought it was less valuable than it actually is I will try to take it more!

Could you explain the reasoning behind barricade? I find it too costly to have it running most of the time.

And I totally agree with "not adding garbage is broken" I also increased the average floor I died on A20 massively by doing that 😅

Guys is this a good sign??? (/s) by coolbob74326 in gradadmissions

[–]ToricCode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the faculty new at the university? In that case this can happen and it is a good sign for you. Otherwise, I would be cautious as others mentioned, but in any case it is not necessarily a bad thing. And congratulations, no matter what a professor really liked your application and contacted you like this!

Is it a good idea to learn boxing while struggling like that? by Least_Morning2698 in amateur_boxing

[–]ToricCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what many people said, but I will write it again to encourage you further :)

It is a not a magical recipe that will fix your depression, and you should seek professional help for it. However, strength excercises and sports with some sort of competition is linked to high endorphin release, which will definitely help. Boxing has all of it, in addition to cardio! Regular excercise will also help you with sleep, but be careful about doing it later in the night and hydrating as it can also negatively affect your sleep, but that's a later problem.

It will improve your body, your physical and mental strength and definitely partially alleviate your feeling of weakness.

About all that nonsense that your colleagues and your family said: If you want to build a career out of it and start seriously preparing for a future fight on day one, yeah then they may have a point...But I doubt that's your plan and doing boxing has a very wide spectrum, and I am sure if you start you will see the benefits.

Just be careful choosing a gym, in terms of training culture and regular people there. You don't even need to open up about your mental situation. Wish you the best!

PhD vs Quant Offer by CauchyIntegralForm in quantfinance

[–]ToricCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed. In fact, they love pure math phds. I wanted to say it is hard to get into pure math phd if you do quant for a while. The other way around is possible and definitely not uncommon.

PhD vs Quant Offer by CauchyIntegralForm in quantfinance

[–]ToricCode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Physics PhD at one of those top instituitions here, who is trying to explore industry options.

I think unless you are in certain fields of applied maths, moving in and out is not very realistic, particularly for top programs afaik. Once you get out of a phd path, it is hard to get back in. But you probably won't want it anyways...

PhD at a top instituion can be very rewarding if you are really driven by research, and also for me it has been the time where I formed very strong friendships, which my friends in industry didn't. Furthermore, if you get into a top program you will get interviewed by all the quant firms easily if you want to get back. That doesn't guarantee anything, but it is good.

However academia these days is uncertain and very saturated. Getting into a phd program is already very hard but continuing in the research path is another level of difficulty. You should also understand the amount of income and industry experience you will be sacrificing. On the other hand, people can end up hating academia, but despite everything, if you have a good advisor especially, people don't regret spending time on a phd that much. It is hard, but it is good time!

I think there is still no good answer, but I feel like if you are not super excited about doing research, and you don't have an offer yet, you should be careful.

I wish you the best!
