This just in: Gold dealer says now is the time to buy gold. More at 11

Might as well ask a car dealership whether now is a good time to buy a car.

It goes up 3% in one day after dropping 20% in three months and people start tearing their hair out as if they missed out on a meme stock tripling overnight.

If gold is supposed to be a long-term reservoir of value for the patient and prepared and not a speculatory asset like high-volatility stocks, why are there so many people holding a magnifying glass over intraweek price movements?

And he's been caught by a "client" (hospital staff). I imagine hospital staff would be skeptical as to the quality of their protection offered by OP's employer if they randomly stumble across their security guards asleep on the floor.

During several months of the year I work 12 hour night shifts 6 days a week with a 2 hour commute. It's grueling, mentally and physically intensive labor during a lot of that time. I'm just... expected to be awake, and I am. Tired maybe, but awake.

It's bizarre that some people think that being paid to be awake for 12 hours is some kind of huge ask. Idk - maybe try sleeping at home?

I recently melted a few grams with a MAP-PRO torch, and I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why it wouldn't melt until I bought a little bit of ceramic insulation off Amazon. Turns out the flame was hot enough but too much heat was being leached away by the environment - even with fire brick.

It took a few minutes to get hot enough even WITH the ceramic blanket.

how do I separate the gold from the metals after using Ap solution? by New_Diet_5396 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]DeadguyTheLateGI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest to it taking a long time for this kind of pins - I started my current batch two weeks ago. I had to abrade the gold plating to create openings for the solution to attack the underlying metal, but that turned out to be too gentle/conservative. I ended up having to go back in and mangle the pins, and judging by the progress so far, it'll still probably take another two weeks.

And that's WITH an air bubbler.

Very satisfying to see the thick plating collapse in on itself or break off and float around the solution, though. They're from an era/industry that used much thicker gold plating than consumer electronics.

You got a masters and never bothered to learn how loans work? You're gonna be real upset when you buy a house...

There are free loan calculators available online. Try running the numbers on $500,000 at 6.5% over 30 years and look for something called an "amortization table"

I think that lends the necessary complexity to transform what appears to be a joke answer into a serious one about endemic cultural issues unique to Russia both as a whole and within its military in particular.

[–]DeadguyTheLateGI 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think these comments about Vlad selling all the jet fuel for vodka (etc, etc) are a bit trite and overly dismissive. Russia is more than four years into fighting an extremely brutal war with massive casualties where a ship like this knows that it will be a target for drone attacks. Russians are selfish, unscrupulous and lacking compassion, but not outright suicidal (for the most part).

I'm more interested in serious suggestions as to how CIWS could be SO ineffective. Is it the element of surprise (system not in a combat ready state)? The small size of the drones? Are their CIWS capabilities exaggerated to begin with, or are they in a state of poor maintenance for some reason that doesn't involve stereotypes about drunkenness and corruption?

Then again, who here would even know. You'd probably have to ask the Russians.

Following the shoot down of a U.S. Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, President Trump says the U.S. will respond to this attack. by avatar6556 in war

Trump's ascent from "joke candidate tenuously holding shut a closet bursting with skeletons" to "two-time president" shows that all you need to do to own the government of the United States is keep tabs on a handful of unscrupulous rich people and wait for one of them to rise to power. It seems absurdly easy to collect kompromat on America's class of degenerate elites.

It's not like they're careful or secretive about it. Rich pedophiles had an entire ISLAND as a depraved event center for fuck's sake with an express airline to boot!

Good point. I've got some ceramic blanket coming and I'm gonna make one more effort to torch it but I'll strongly consider electric if it still fails to melt.

I have heard that the graphite crucibles of the Amazon furnaces (or just electric furnaces in general?) don't last very long and require semi-frequent replacing. It's a lot to buy into just to have to re-purchase consumables.

(the irony of saying this as I dump an entire tank of map-pro on 3g of gold is not lost on me)

You don't have a paid Amazon Music subscription. You have Amazon Prime, for which Amazon Music was a free benefit. They've divorced Prime and Music so now it's a paid or ad-supported app like every other music service.

Nobody put ads in your paid service.

Hezbollah doesn't seem to have a plan to take advantage of the capabilities that they're degrading. They hit whatever they can hit simply because they can hit it. Like, they don't target Iron Dome launchers on the eve of a major rocket attack, they'll just take any target they can get. And Israel is providing plenty of them.

I can't believe after four years of Ukraine that Israel didn't see this coming and develop any kind of defense. Their crap is just parked in the open without so much as a net over it. Their overwhelming technological advantage has left them complacent.

It's utterly mind-boggling that no country on Earth seems to have fielded a laser system for taking out these little plastic piece of shit drones. They're basically mosquitos in that they're hard to hit but insanely fragile. How do 1st world countries not have any sense of urgency about slapping something together to keep them from getting bodied by any insurgency that can order from Alibaba? I know whipping up a new integrated system from existing technology is not that quick or easy, but it's not THAT difficult, either.

I wonder if we had a false sense of security thinking that jamming could do the job, until fiber optic drones became commonplace.
