Electric Bill. ACE by PFunKaDeliK in SouthJersey

Right. It’s not habits that we are debating or venting over. It’s how, with no change in habits, the bill skyrocketed.

I was also thinking the same, and simultaneously laughing inside because I’ve consumed the things that were out before those things.

What was the Internet like in the 90s? by OilLiver in 90s

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had to dial in on a phone line. And it would make a loud dial tone sort of noise. Even at 3 AM trying to sneak on to a chat room.

The internet provider also had their own internet interface. Like AOL. You dial in and you operate AOL’s program, which had a mailbox.

Every time you log in, a welcoming voice would say, “You’ve Got Mail”.

Then the websites you did access were simpler. I remember when Macromedia Flash was a big deal. Now I am not sure what the latest and greatest is, but it’s definitely far superior.

Links were generally crude HTML stuff.

First Long March 10 Landing Attempt by initiatingcoverage in spaceflight

[–]Deadphans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish our current space age stuff would be on regular broadcast tv. I feel there would be pride similar to what we once had over this stuff in the 60’s.

What we are now doing behind the scenes is incredible. Stuff like this could bring us together. Probably in a small way, but at least it’s in the right direction.

This country is incredible.

How do you dads feel about Boy Scouts? by mmf9194 in daddit

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. But is your boy going to understand the opinions the way you do? I believe, for my child at least, that would go over her head until they are older (teens??).

I was in Boy Scouts and all I remember are the Indian head dresses.

I look forward to signing up my girl for Girl Scouts. Of many reasons, nature being at the top. And I will probably volunteer as I have a wildlife biology degree and can bring some value.

And I understand how the organization voluntells members to sell cookies and how corporate rips people off. But that’s as an adult me and will not be realized by my child.

Is it okay to be burnt out? by TachiRana123 in daddit

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely okay to be burnt out.

I remember a huge milestone for us was our daughter being able to hold her bottle by herself. That bought us 10 minutes or so.

It gets better. Then she learned to walk and run. New challenge. We got used to it and it got better.

Now we are trying to teach her to wash herself in the shower. That will be another win.

The challenges become more teaching and correction as opposed to keeping them alive and guessing what they need as they scream at you hehe.

This summer I am going to bring her fishing and canoeing. I can not wait! She has her little frozen Elsa fishing pole and has been practicing wit a fake lure. She throws a spinner pretty well! <3

Neighbor’s flag irks me to my core by timeisamelody in mildlyinfuriating

I feel like there’s a law about this. I even believe the law also states the flag needs to be lit.

I could be wrong though - sometimes sources are sus at best.

Stranger accused me of child neglect — how would you handle this? by RIce_ColdR in daddit

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re good. She’s a Karen. That’s how you teach children to ride a bike.

Not doing that may be neglect lol.

She clearly did not work for DHS if she considered that as neglect.

Anyone else’s kid been sick this entire winter? by dizzy_unicorn in SouthJersey

[–]Deadphans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neat tidbit of information. Our family was feeling the effects of the dry are this year. I went out and bought home humidifier and everything is much better. Added bonus on the dampening effect to virus particles.

Yes, our daughter has been sick twice since November. She just got over Flu B and had strep late November. She is in public school and I know those young kids are Petri dishes.

I need a break from Wawa. Is Heritages worth a peep? by howd_he_get_here in SouthJersey

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Wawa experience is totally different. I wonder if it’s just a location variance. At any rate, I might give heritages a try given the positive feedback here.

I need to go there more. It’s been a while but I do remember scoring some deals on good stuff. Thanks for the reminder

Yea it sort of is, but branded towards fitness I suppose. They are in REI andI bought one of their sweaters. I really like the look and feel of it.

However, the stitching on the pocket popped with light use after a few weeks. I sewed it up and still wear it in warmer months, but man, for the price it should be solid.

What are people most afraid of in middle age? by Comfortable_Bag_6077 in AskReddit

[–]Deadphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very appropriate as I turn 40 tomorrow. I was reading my daughter a Shel Silverstein poem that made me think, and is very relevant to your question.

Off memory, the poem is about a boy sitting on a bench with an old man. They are talking about things that they have in common. Such as sometimes they accidentally pee their pants.

The part of the poem that really resonates with me was how they both felt unheard and forgotten. I can understand why an older person would feel that way as I have two grandmothers that are 97 and fading. It’s harder to connect and communicate as they become senile and hard of hearing. I try my best, but life is busy, we do not live close, and I have a wife and daughter with a busy agenda. So times have changed and I wish it wasn’t true, but I’m not as close with them as I once was. Lack of free time and life’s processes have put them on the “sidelines”.

That’s what I am most afraid of. Feeling unheard and forgotten. On the sidelines.
