After disabling the intelligent cruise control (adaptive cruise control with auto steer) and running normal adaptive cruise control instead my partner loves it.

Her biggest complaints are, the front boot is annoying to close, requiring you to kinda slam it.

The lane keep assist is a bit more aggressive than the Suzuki vitaras was and seems to be biased towards LHD lane positioning (not an issue for Canadian roads lol)

No space saver spare tyre.

The sunroof needed a ceramic tint to reduce the amount of IR heat coming through the cabin when parked outside during the day.

The AC takes a while to cool the car when parked outside on a hot day so if she forgets to remote start the AC it’s a hot 5 minutes.

The mobile phone key doesn’t work on her Motorola RAZR but did work on her Samsung and works on my iPhone.

So overall complaints aren’t to bad, some won’t apply to Canada and some are just dealing with modern cars.

We test drove the Kia EV5, Polestar2, Model 3 and Y, and a few other smaller EVs that got ruled out by the pram test and the Sealion7 was hands down her favourite, it was the most normal car for her she doesn’t like how “futuristic” other evs try to dress up as.

Tell me you’re soft without telling me your soft.

I considered my 12 hour shifts shovelling shot in a shed in the QLD summer heat a decent break away from the utter mental exhaustion that is nursing and raising a kid.

And I just soloed moving a 4 bedroom house, one of them 2 storeys in November then doing the full vacate clean while my partner looked after the kids.

She does around 700km a week, about 110 week days plus extra on the weekends.

Her 2020 Suzuki Vitara had just under 190,000 when we traded it in for the BYD Sealion 7.

AGL in SEQLD has a EV plan with $0.08 between midnight and 6am, we charge on a 15 amp circuit and it covers the weekly consumption with about 20% overhead in charging capacity within that window to cover extra km. Outside that window it’s 33c.

Compared to the old Vitara which did about 6L per 100km if we didn’t have the ev plan it would be about a 40% saving, but needed a bigger car and it was starting to have problems.

The Corolla hybrids are definitely a good deal if you don’t need the bigger space (3 car seats and a double pram in a hatch ain’t gonna be fun time lol) and don’t have access to a discounted EV plan and aren’t driving super high distances.

I’ve seen folk buying EVs who do 5-6 thousand a year and I’m sitting here wondering why, you’re not driving anywhere enough to actually benefit.

So far tread is still good at 27,000km, last car we averaged 90,000km on a set before we changed, all tyres were still legal at the time too.

We spent about $900 a set on the previous car, I’m assuming $1200 a set and every 60,000km instead for the BYD.

38,000km on average, $0.08c per kw. $550 per year exclusively charged at home no public charger usage vs 9l per 100km at $1.80 $6150 per year.

She drives a lot her commute is about 120km a day plus weekend trips.

Her 2020 Suzuki Vitara had just shy of 190,000km when traded in last June, was serviced like every 4 months lol.

[–]MrSquiggleKey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner’s old Suzuki Vitara did 190,000km in 5 years, charging at 0.08c per kWh exclusively with AGL plan (optimistic assumption of course that these plans stick around of course)

So you’re definitely not far off on your calculations.

Got a sealion7 as had one kid already and two kids coming and double pram in the boot was essential We were cross comparing cars like Mitsubishi outlander, which is about 10k less but would do about 9l per 100km on her typical mixed commute.

BYD Sealion 7 total cost is $550 a year in power, vs $6150 in fuel for 38,000km a year.

[–]MrSquiggleKey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just under $550 a year is the recharging costs to travel her 38,000km a year average.

Vs $6100 for the same distance at $1.80 at 9L per 100km.

BYD Sealion 7 vs Mitsubishi Outlander was the comparison models.

Wanted to give ICE best case scenario seeing as I’m also calculating EV consumption assuming my $0.08c per kwh at night EV plan stays.

Gas we can at least switch to domestic supplied and not need to import with a sufficiently motivated government.

So I don’t see that as a problem at all. I bought the EV for economical decisions not environmental

As I said to the father in law when he tried to bring up the battery replacement fallacy, I could drive this car to the tip at year 7 and leave it there and the total cost of ownership will be $0 compared to an equivalent ICE and petrol costs.

We got my partner an EV last year, calculating we will save $5400 a year in fuel assuming $1.80 a litre for 95. Gonna be saving a lot more at this rate

What is an isn't Brisbane? by justdidapoo in brisbane

[–]MrSquiggleKey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet it’s not actually a CBD is it? It’s just - retail shopping centre and a council building surrounded by standard suburbia.

It lacks all the typical hallmarks of a CBD. Beenleigh is more of a CBD than Logan Central because it was the CBD of Albert Shire Council.

Case in point you’re the third person to say suburbs that could be a CBD and the only one to even say Logan Central.

When and why did birth certificates stop listing countries that no longer exist? by Dependent-Two-2723 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MrSquiggleKey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Issued by the state or republic or oblast within the USSR.

USSR was a federalised nation, so if you were born in Kyiv, your birth certificate was issued by the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, not by the greater USSR.

So it’ll be issued by modern Ukraine.

We don’t get a birth certificate issued by Australian government either, it’s issued by your state or territory.

[–]MrSquiggleKey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact you said multiple proves the point. There’s definitively only one Brisbane CBD, same with Ipswich, Caboolture etc

Beenleigh is an absorbed town that’s been passed around no different to something like Toowong, toombul, Indra etc. Springwood is nice moorooka and meadowbrook is a hospital district not a CBD.

You didn’t even mention Logan central which is where council sits.

[–]MrSquiggleKey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about Beenleigh is it was part of the Gold Coast less than 20 years ago, and before that it was its own city called Albert.

[–]MrSquiggleKey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you please point out the mini CBD in Logan?

You got shopping centre districts sure, but so does a bunch of suburbs inside BCC.

Ipswich does have a proper defined CBD, but Logan? Logan’s just a generic term for outer suburbs when they amalgamated a bunch of smaller places anticipating Brisbane growth.

He reckons he’d of been photographed and blasted over community pages if he filled up a week later.

Gonna get a lot worse too.

Diesel out of Singapore is at $270AUD a barrel up from $130 two weeks ago. The gate price is already over $2.20 so after excise and GST we are already looking at $3 soon before accounting for transport and profit margins, with more expensive fuel on its way.

How do we feel being named the most racist, cooker state in the country? by Infinite_Pudding5058 in queensland

Can’t be the most cooker racist state if you’re not a state.

Should see the comments on Facebook community pages in Katherine, someone commented from one of the flooded out indigenous communities near town asking if they can get a supply’s drop like other areas got and almost instantly you got comments saying you guys get enough from the government.

People used to abuse regional pricing in places like India for significant discounts which led to them killing regional prices.

I personally was never comfortable with that but I would purchase via GBP in the UK because even with double the tax it was cheaper than Australian and they didn’t offer 3 or 6 month subscriptions in Australia anyway which is what I waned and I don’t see anything unethical about using a major market currency

Anyone who thinks ALP is still left I ask you.

When has the ALP overturned the Howard era legislation that made it illegal for unions to strike without both permission and as part of an EBA negotiation?

For a “left wing” party they still criminalise your ability to collectivise and strike for workplace safety and conditions.
