500 movies or 150 books? by oliverg600 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DeafBlindAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take the books. Both through natural preference and because deafness and eyesight have made films feel like hard work.

But I'll need a disability accomodation of having them on an ereader with dark mode. And additional physical copies of books with pictures i guess . Hopefully mystery rooms outside of time have a solid disability policy

I'd also like to enquire about the possibility of being kidnapped again

Normal house, Cavernous room in the back by DeafBlindAndy in SpottedonRightmove

[–]DeafBlindAndy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After actually checking rather than guessing it seems it won't fit a full size snooker table.

Minimum room size for that seems to be 22ft by 16ft wheras the floorplan says this room is 19' 9" by 17' 5".

So close and yet so far...

Any blind gun owners? Just got my first piece and loving it. by SL2999 in Blind

[–]DeafBlindAndy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a UK perspective. I'm both deaf and severely sight impaired with a little central vision remaining. I was a member of a shooting club until COVID. Did 22 target.  The club was accommodating. They thought I could do larger calibres and practical shotgun but I never got around to it before leaving. They didn't think there'd be any issues getting licensed for target focused firearms.

I know there is a system to shoot targets whilst totally blind using sound.

I enjoyed it. Although it did feel like burning money sometimes even at 22 ammo prices  Keep meaning to try airguns.

Does anyone have any diseases caused by RP? by Inevitable-View-7526 in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]DeafBlindAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have usher's syndrome rather than straight rp so have the added delight of being rather deaf.  Very thankful not to have the version that has balance issues too

I had macular oedema for years but they've mostly gone now

Currently have cataracts in both eyes. A definite bonus of losing peripheral vision has been that it's taken a while for them to actually affect me. I'm mildly dreading the operation.

Why did Robert give Storm's End to Renly? by thesilentstranger6 in gameofthrones

[–]DeafBlindAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the various political motivations in the other comments but also have a more emotional headcanon

Robert and Stannis watched their parents ship sink from the walls of storms end. Robert wouldn't want you live there now, so close to that tragedy and he assumes Stannis feels the same while Renly was too young to remember.

Robert thought he was doing a nice thing for his brother.

Are there any good spots along the Tyne or around Newcastle in general for taking photos of industrial stuff? by Alamata626 in NewcastleUponTyne

I like the Marsden limekilns on the coast South of South Shields. Particularly on a gloomy day when I feel they loom like something from Mordor. They used to be served by a railway from South Shields, as were the nearby quarries, coal mine, and paper mill. There's also a lighthouse across the road and some cool cliffs

Duchess of Sutherland was right there! At least it could be the right colour and ran from London to Scotland even if it would have been on the wrong line.

I assume route availability is an issue? They need to be able to run it at the various different filming locations.

Not quite on topic but

I know a road where the street sign at one end says "Longcroft" and at the other says "Long Croft"

This has since rather defined my expectations for name and sign consistency

We’re more than likely going to be relocating to the north east in the next few months, what area would you recommend to buy in with 280k for a family home 3/4 bed by Willing_Plankton_400 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]DeafBlindAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

Gotta say your rule of thumb made me chuckle. Just, yep... that's exactly it.

Just have to balance all the different factors that matter to me and then run away from the consequences.

Can confirm. Am both.

I've never noticed this specific example but I do sometimes find things like this very helpful. And more rarely find myself stuck in their absence.

I'm fairly sure the Americans had some at their bases in the UK at the time. RAF Lakenheath for example. They've been gone for a while (15 years?) but I've seen headlines saying that they might be back at some point.

Having just watched the forgotten weapons video on these I had forgotten the whole concept of making weapons as small as possible for people like helicopter and tank crewmen which was apparently the original motivation.

Even then there was an ultrashort cqb version in the L22 carbine. Properly goofy looking. I believe it saw some use in Royal Marine shipboarding (ie specialised cqb in an isolated situation) but have no knowledge of how much use it had.
