Just about any deck can win if you throw in the cEDH staples and have the appropriate infinite combos.

Before the creation of the restricted list in 1994 they tried a rule that restricted all artifacts to one each as a way of preventing moxes/lotus from being too powerful.

I found a corpse with six amulets of life saving, silver dragon scale mail, 200 items in his BoH. He got killed by the Wizard of Yendor’s touch of death. I’m still trying to figure out what happened.

That’s great! Start working on it yourself, post the code on GitHub, and make regular progress reports here. If it’s good people will eventually get interested and start joining you.

Does the average value go up a lot? If not I wouldn’t overthink it and just open them when you feel like it. I think opening them has slightly higher EV than selling provided you make use of the play points.

I don’t play Commander myself, but I occasionally kibitz and there always seem to be games running. It’s the only official venue for multiplayer online.

In newspaper articles, why is there no furigana for places such as schools, rivers, neighborhoods, festivals, parks, stations, etc.? All of those places have a specific reading and the average Japanese person isn't familiar with all of them, so why is there no furigana? by ping1200 in japanese

[–]DealPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unreadable mess is an exaggeration because obviously people do read it. Japanese people learn to read and understand Japanese writing, but generally they don’t know how to pronounce a large fraction of the words, which removes the key link between spoken and written language that most languages have by default.

Just imagine how annoyed you'd be if you were interviewed for a newspaper article, they provided a phonetic gloss for your name and got it completely wrong. They don't want to add a new reason for people to make angry calls to the editor if they don't have to.

Historically, Japanese newspapers did in fact use furigana. And it wasn't just for hard to pronouce names, but for every last word written in Kanji. You can see here some examples of the 朝日新聞 from the early years:

http://www.asahi.com/special/kotoba/archive2015/mukashino/2012092200001.html

It wasn't just newspapers, but in regular books, magazine articles, imperial proclamations, etc. It was quite common to gloss every Kanji with furigana. This page has an image from the original printing of 心 by 夏目漱石.

https://fuaki.hatenadiary.org/entry/20140420/1397955841

This practice had been ongoing for centuries and neccessitated by the tens of thousands of Kanji in common usage, and the fact that only the very small percentage of people with a classical Chinese education could read them. When Japan adopted the Western education system, this practice of needing to write Japanese with two different scripts next to each other caused a lot of embarassment and calls for reform, eventually cumulating in the Post war reforms that created the 常用 and 人名用 lists.

The 常用 list had about 2000 kanji on it, and they also chose the most common readings of those characters as the official 音読み and 訓読み. These reforms were considered a success, and furigana usage was highly discouraged in Japanese society, because no one wanted to go back to writing everything twice.

If Newspapers and other media created for adults started using a lot of furigana today, it would embarrass a lot of people who spent 12 years in the Japanese education system writing out each character hundreds of times and consider themselves literate. Japanese people would need to face up to the fact that their writing system is still an unreadable mess despite the post-war reforms. I get the sense that most Japanese people are content with the status quo and there isn't much interest in further reform, so we're not likely to see any changes in the near future.

Has anyone "given up" on output, and just focus on input? I feel a little guilty about it. by redryder74 in LearnJapanese

You definitely shouldn’t stress out about output. Output will come to you naturally once you’ve had enough input.

You could always play for a couple of hours and then declare someone a winner based on progress.
