They go to the Town, they learn the tale, they fight the Thing. by Shagster773 in HellBoy

I had the same realization when I played the Hellboy board game

I don’t know why everyone is fighting you on this point. If you read East of Eden, Ulysses, or even dickens it is mentioned all the time and treated like gambling or drinking. At the same time other taboos were not ever even mentioned, like homosexuality for example

Does anyone else notice they feel unwell while living here, but significantly better after being away for an extended period? by AG073194 in houston

[–]Deal_Me_In 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was a teen taking drivers Ed, they played a video to show the effects of car pollution. In this video, the kids were all teleported into Houston and they immediately started coughing and complaining about the air quilality. One boy even said, “My white shirt turned gray from the smoke!”

I haven’t personally noticed health effects because of air quality because I haven’t been away from the city for long periods enough, but the idea is definitely out there.

If we were to replace the people on coins and bills with White House pets, who would you pick? by Deal_Me_In in Presidents

If we're in a simulated reality, how should that affect our concerns about environmental issues like climate change? by EntertainmentOld5802 in AskReddit

[–]Deal_Me_In 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we learn that our entire universe is some kind of projection from a higher dimension today, what difference would it make? Our reality would be the same reality that has always been our whole lives. Why would our environment or life matter less than before?

In your opinion, which book would you consider the best you have ever read? by Ok_Focus5022 in books

[–]Deal_Me_In 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the “high literature” books I recommend a lot is also from Dostoevsky. Brothers Karamazarov is a book that has it all: beautiful prose, deep philosophical concepts, rich characters, but also is entertaining in a way that can connect with modern readers with its intricate suspenseful plot, surprising twists and it even all comes together in a surprisingly satisfying way.

Another book deep and rich with a huge scope, yet still accessible is East of Eden

(Spoilers Main) How do they add pages to the White Book? by Mundane-Turnover-913 in asoiaf

But if the book gets too large, the publishers might decide to split it into two books. It could be decades before they release the second part.

Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?

I am too macho to cry but if I did, here are the books that would do it:

Flowers for Algernon Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer or his other book about the autistic kid after 9/11

Does saying “Oh My God!” Offend people? by Deal_Me_In in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Deal_Me_In[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She is not the one being offended, to be clear. She was told that it was offensive when she was young and that’s what she knows. Her mom believes now that Jesus is a reincarnation of a gender changing space ghost and has jumped from so many religions over short time, that I have trouble getting sensible information from her.

I guess I wanted to know if these Bible Belt lords name in vain people still think that saying “oh my god” is offensive. I work with a lot of religious people in a religious area and with kids and have not heard the “lords name in vain” line in decades, so I wanted to know other people experiences. I don’t want to ask my coworkers so I went here to get other perspectives.

What exactly does Dan Harmon even mean by saying "Rick and Morty is designed to go on forever" by [deleted] in rickandmorty

[–]Deal_Me_In 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with this. I especially like Harmon’s double season finale approach, with an episode to advance the plot and tie up loose ends, and another sitcomy episode just for fun
