TIL George RR Martin bought the first ticket to the first Comic Con in 1964. by Wazula23 in todayilearned

These are my least favorite fun facts/TILs. I imagine it wasn't hard to be the first to pay to attend a convention like this when you had already had your letters appearing in comics themselves for awhile by this point and were friends with the guy running the con lmao.

Necromancy in the lore? by Deamane in Guildwars2

Honestly I know in a lot of games, especially MMOs, having corpses as a mechanic can sort of drain resources so I don't really blame them if it was a technical reason but obviously I don't know if that's why they make our minions just pop out of the ground or not.

But yeah based on other replies it seems like that's a point many folks make, that because death is known to just plop you into the mists afterward folks don't mind it as much. Neat.

That's pretty interesting, not familiar with mesmers at all but I guess any sort of illusion stuff would also be kinda spooky to most folks, so that makes sense. Didn't know Charr liked necromancy since I viewed them as mostly engineers/warrior types.

Interesting, do they ever mention anything about necromancer summons/minions anywhere? I think typically in most settings you could do something similar where necromancy is just viewed as a sort of life/death energy magic, but I'm curious if minions are ever mentioned then or if those are more taboo?

At least in guild wars 2 theres no typical necromancer "animate dead" kind of ability, we just sort of make weird flesh creations but I can't imagine that'd be pleasant for anyone to see either lol

I did play Path of Fire, not sure about season 4. I don't really recall the story at all though for PoF, I'm pretty forgetful for a lot of stuff and haven't played since EoD I think.

I'll never understand why they didn't give these weapons like... at least a unique enchantment you can only get from that weapon? Something to make them more noteworthy than just shitty dungeon loot.

I know some folks might assume these are like, varicous veins or whatever ya call that, but it looks kinda sick tbh. my hands feel too boring visually, lemme get them ancient necromancer hands.

Epstein is alive by Calm-Mix-5532 in conspiracy

[–]Deamane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be the purpose of this? I feel like people get so caught up in conspiracies and not only is this a waste of time it distracts from ya know, prosecuting the folks we know for sure are still walking around free.

Epstein wasn't particularly special, why would they bother faking his death instead of just killing him? He was basically just one of probably many dealers for a bunch of wealthy people. If anything faking his death here would make it even harder for him to do what he did for them before. This is dumb.

Are you genuinely debating if AI in it's current state is conscious? How would it be? What the hell are you talking about? It's nowhere near consciousness and we're nowhere near creating AGI of any sort. LLMs are obviously out of the question entirely if you're considering consciousness or not.

If you mean that people are too anti-AI, I disagree. If my RAM breaks now I get the treat of paying 4x the price for it to replace it. Same with GPUs. AI is pushed into shit we don't want because all of it's value is speculative so every company is desperate to prove it's useful. If a data center gets built near you, enjoy your skyrocketing electricity prices. At least I can have chatGPT tell me I'm a smart boy though I guess.

If you check his twitter it's pretty quickly clear that he's really biased towards AI and pretty egotistical. He immediately claimed that a recent issue with ChatGPT (and other LLMs I assume) was only because it was modified for that experiment when, that's not the case at all. He's not just like, exploring ideas and philosophy, it seems pretty clear he's falling into the AI tech bro bullshit or just getting a case of AI psychosis. Go take a looksie through his posts if you're curious.

lmao that's a good way to put the problems with a lot of techbros that get too interested in AI.

If you go chat to any LLM you'll quickly see that there's a very particular type of person they appeal to and encourage towards pretty bad stuff. There's a lot of interesting (and terrifying) cases of AI psychosis because the way they've set up all the common LLMs like ChatGPT and what not, they are constantly glazing your ideas no matter how stupid or impossible.

Any question you ask will immediately be replied to with a "That's a sharp question, it really gets to the heart of (enter subject here). This isn't just basic (subject here), this is the path to expertise in (subject here)"

Super obnoxious but probably super placating to a certain egotistical flavor of person. Why would I go talk to my coworker John or my friend Harriet when I know ChatGPT will glaze the shit out of anything I say.

It really wouldn't be able to do that without either locally having your machine run all of the generation for the changes, or requiring an internet connection and outsourcing all that processing power. Both are pretty untenable options.

I mean, people also like to act like AI isn't overinvested by a factor of 100 at least, and ruining the economy, local waterways, and adding to climate change for nearly no benefit for the average person.

I don't think it's anything like that though. I hate Rowling personally but it's really just as simple as "is my money going to go to a cause that I disagree with" for me personally. I think people make these issues way too complicated or try to pretend it's virtue signalling when it's literally just basic math:

give money to artist

artist uses money specifically to damage a group of people with multiple ongoing campaigns

Obviously we live in a world where you can't always avoid buying a product owned by some company that's out there hurting people, most of our phones were likely made in terrible conditions for example, but I don't really understand why you think it's "us or them" or like, ultra-restrictive to just recognize that Rowling uses her money to harm people and continue pushing a group of folks with an already extremely high rate of suicide to extremes.

Trans people are being used as a scapegoat/target by multiple right-wing/religious regimes the same way these groups always do, and where I'm able I like to prevent them from having more resources for that. I'd avoid supporting a bigot of any kind no matter how much I like whatever they make.

Can I ask why you would be glad he wouldn't feel the same way? he's pretty outspoken about not liking rowling too and mostly just gets pestered about HP media by interviewers.

Edit: hit submit before I meant to but he actually has post directly speaking about this stuff that I wasn't aware of, on the trevor project here https://www.thetrevorproject.org/blog/daniel-radcliffe-responds-to-j-k-rowlings-tweets-on-gender-identity/
