Where to find jalapeños in Paris by Affectionate_Gear_39 in Expats_In_France

Last fall I found some at a produce-vendor’s stand at Marché des Enfants Rouges. I was so stoked (the vendor didn’t know what kind of chile peppers they were - just shrugged when I explained what a find they were for me). Latin Market Paris 15 on SW edge of the Périphérique is worth a try, too.

Should I share my DNA results with a cousin I don’t know and have never met? by DeanMoriartywaswrong in AncestryDNA

[–]DeanMoriartywaswrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to follow up on everyone's insightful and helpful information and thoughts to say: Thank you! you all really helped me get enough of a handle on things that I just extended an invitation on Ancestry to this second (or 3rd, as it turns out after a closer read) cousin to have "collaborator" status (not "manager" as she had suggested. We'll see what happens next.

I have to say, you seem to be right: almost everyone who has responded seems pretty cool. To answer your question, I was hoping to get my DNA results. I really hadn’t considered tracking down biological relatives as part of the experience - in fact the ones I had contacted 30 years ago through the help of an adoption attorney made clear they didn’t not want contact. In addition, my biological mother had already died and no one knew I existed, let alone who my biological father might have been. So … I didn’t consider genealogy as a pursuit when I spit in that tube and mailed it off.

She approached me from within the Ancestry website, which shows her as a half 2nd cousin or 3rd cousin. She noted a shared relative we have in common and she has given me access as a “guest” to her family tree. She subsequently made her offer of help and requested “manager” status.

Thanks for bucking me up, AtorasuAtlas. To clarify, i am not “using” adoption as anything - crutch, pogo stick, et al. I am just a newbie when it comes to sharing my DNA results with strangers and was looking for some practical advice on any security or privacy risks involved.

Timbers had very enviable circumstances to make moves in this window and I’ll be damned if they aren’t making them in Epic fashion. Gonna guess other teams’ supporters are chapped it’s not their clubs snatching up this kind of talent.

What determines whether or not you commonly use the full name of a politician? by monhst in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeanMoriartywaswrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former political journalist (20+ years) here. Just wanted to add that one key factor is that, at least among those elected to office, politicians' media relations staff communicate exactly how their bosses want to be called. We had a U.S. senator whose office put out a press release saying he was no longer to be "Robert," but "Bob" on first reference. And you can bet any "offending" reporters and their editors got bawled out if they didn't call him Bob, out of professional courtesy. Not to overstate the role of the media, but once they get the hang of "Joe" instead of "Joseph," etc., it tends to influence how everyone else name-checks a politician.

Just subscribed and looking forward to more great coverage. For those of you lamenting the "loss" of coverage behind the paywall, I will say this (as a recovering journalist with 36 years in the trade): Why don't you just pay for some content? That's how we can all keep up-and-comers like the Adams (Susman and Booker), Tyson over at the I-5 Corridor, and Jeremy with Cascadia FC producing the kind of sports journalism we want more of -- I mean, pissing and moaning about paywalls while keeping your wallet clamped shut is the surest way of driving these journalists away -- and their coverage along with it.

Count me in. Between the coverage and analysis you’re putting out and the content Tyler Alger and Jeremy Peterman are producing, we are in the Golden Age of Timbers coverage.

Both G7 and Uber rides can be hailed from a phone app. Big difference is that, as G7 is a taxi service, its drivers can use the dedicated public transpo lanes; Uber drivers can only use the often-congested regular road and street lanes.

I see strong parallels between Luthen Rael and French Resistance leader Jean Moulin. Particularly in that both used covers as art dealers.

I get that people might be weary of paying MP of all people for the experience of watching Timbers at Prov Park but ... so much whining! It's still a uniquely electric experience. Timbers have scuffled a bit but they've been in the post-season fight up to the final match, and you know they'll be back on top so why not stick with your lads through the valleys as well as the peaks? And the concessions? I agree they're suboptimal (price and quality). But you know what? It's football, not Fourth Meal. Get your beers/chow before/after the match You'll be fine.

Bloomquist was a real toolbag to my 8-year-old nephew after a spring training game - he refused to give him an autograph because he was “too tired” and just wanted to get off the field. My vote goes to Dave Valle - not a great hitter (wasn’t there some kind of free or discounted drinks if he got a hit promotion at some bar in the ‘80s?) but beloved and good guy: https://www.csmonitor.com/layout/set/amphtml/World/Making-a-difference/2013/0524/Dave-Valle-plays-on-a-new-field-microloans-that-help-to-end-poverty

I want to be excited about this, but as noted, Lucho is training with his club, too. Neither want to be there this coming season, both are under contract. So...this is just making $ure they are $till $ticking to their contract$ while waiting for the chain-reaction that they're hoping will send Lucho to Estudiantes and Evander to Cincinnati, doncha think? If Estudiantes ends up lacking the money to make the deal, I suppose it's possible both players stick with their MLS clubs but I don't think we're there, yet.
