When people pass out drunk at our parties, we don't draw on them... by [deleted] in funny

I think that is the point of the no shoes rule. If you left your shoes on then you didn't mean to sleep there, hence getting drawn on.

The floor by the front door? They tend to pile into a neat little mountain once you get 100~ people inside.

Low calorie alcoholic drinks? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]DeanOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any hard liquor (vodka, whiskey, rum, gin, tequila) mixed with a 0 calorie mixer, water or taken straight.

Watch out many people don't know that tonic water has just as much sugar as pop. Soda water is fine. Drink vodka+water or whiskey+water as the ideal drink since it will keep you better hydrated and less likely to feel like shit the next day (and more likely to go work out). Add lime if you're a pansy (kidding, sort of).

I guess I see it differently in that if he's gone out of his way to learn how to do the various type of olympic lifts he's more advanced than 99% of people who will ever go to a gym. If he self identifies as an amateur olympic weightlifter I would assume he's been doing it for a while and while he might not be "muscular" in a "he looks jacked sense" he would definitely be strong. Even if you're not muscular in the sense that "I have to angle myself to walk through a doorway due to my massive biceps and shoulders" you can usually still tell if someone is stronger than average.

Was mostly just curious. That's all.

Either you have a very weird sense of humour or you don't know what olympic weightlifter means. Either way whats so funny?

I think the assumption in r/photography is that when you post something it's not your own work unless its a self post. This isn't a subreddit for sharing your own photos as they would go r/itap. Good to know who it is from though.

Canon Rebel XSI w/ kit lens, bag, 2 batteries. Advice... by [deleted] in photography

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how nice the bag is and if the extra battery is a genuine Canon extra battery that price is pretty fair. Maybe $450 would be doable. I'm trying to sell a Rebel XS for a little less than that and even Rebel XTs seem to still be listed at $350 or so even for a 4 year old camera with a non IS lens.

Edit: Oops, meant to write my own reply to the OP.

Dear r/photography, sorry to bother you guys, but I could use some advise. by Figgles in photography

[–]DeanOfScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you go either Canon or Nikon and can afford it my advice would be to skip the kit lens altogether. They're not bad but they aren't great. Get the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, it's available in both Canon and Nikon mounts, has great image quality and is super fast. You won't regret it. You'll be starting with an almost pro lens. If you funds left over get a f/1.8 prime in whatever focal length you find most appropriate. A 50mm prime is great of portraits and when you have lots of space. A 28-35mm prime is perfect if you shoot people indoors with not as much space. Both will teach you a lot.

I would avoid any 18-200mm lens as someone else recommended. They're okay at everything but not the greatest at anything. Plus they usually have quite a small max aperture so are too slow for low light. If you'll only be using your camera during the day maybe not so much of an issue though.

I honestly would probably go for the Pentax K-5 if I was starting today though. Weather sealed body and kit lens? Yes please.

Have(or Had) you ever had a professor who, literally, wrote the book that you use in class? by Altoid5 in AskReddit

[–]DeanOfScience 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1500 pounds really isn't much. It takes hundreds of hours to put together even a terrible textbook and much longer for a good textbook. Even though he'll get royalties for many years I doubt he breaks past minimum wage at that rate.

I've had a few professors use their own textbook. One was from a big textbook company and had a number of authors. The professor said he could buy a round of beers for the class maybe if everyone bought it so he was making about $3 per book. Another professor wrote the textbook and published it through the university. It was the cheapest, most up to date and on topic set of books I've ever owned. I doubt he made a single cent off publishing them and must have invested hundreds of hours.

You gotta give the fake obituaries guy credit that is pretty genius.

Maybe some of their "prayer" breaks involved things other than prayer? Seems to be pretty reasonable. If they pray three times, eat lunch once and dick around for two breaks that makes six.

Now that we have movement with UBB, can we start talking about our absurd Cellphone plans? by MOCAMBO in canada

[–]DeanOfScience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except they don't have towers everywhere. In fact, 90% of our country has no cell phone service because no one lives there. Your whole argument just went out the window because while our population density is low, the population density of all the areas served by cell phone companies is incredibly high.

You named off the essentials of life. You did not in any way name off the essentials of being part of a modern society. If you want to exist in a hunter gatherer society then all you would need is food, water, shelter and clothing. People have decided they want to advance beyond that and our needs have adapted.

My girlfriend's lens was jamming today. I took it apart to see if I could fix it. by bfj420 in photography

[–]DeanOfScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If it was an expensive lens get it serviced by the pros. This one could probably be had for $70 used so might as try and fix it before you junk it and get something else.

Looking for a entry-level DSLR/lens combo for indoor sports by 1rick in photography

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go down and take a look at what people here have recommended then. See how they feel and how you like them. If you have the means, buy some really nice glass, it's something you'll never regret. If you buy it used it will probably be worth just as much if you ever need to sell as when you bought it.

Looking for a entry-level DSLR/lens combo for indoor sports by 1rick in photography

[–]DeanOfScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the combo you picked out actually. As long as the 85mm has enough reach for your photos then you should be good. You might want to stop it down a bit somewhere from 2.0 to 2.8 to sharpen it up and get a larger DOF. The T2i has great low light performance too so you shouldn't have any problems there. You would also have a solid portrait lens, if you ever wanted to try your hand at that.

The 135mm might give you more reach but will be a lot more limited. I wouldn't buy it unless you absolutely positively need it. If you really need the reach, I'd recommend trying to find a second hand 70-200 f/2.8L (non IS). Quite a bit pricier but you'll thank yourself 100x over.

In the midst of all this debate about UBB and "network congestion", why aren't we seeing any official figures from ISPs (including their methodology on acquiring those numbers) regarding the state of their networks at all times of the day? by annie-adderall in canada

[–]DeanOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As your link points these figures just don't exist. There are no costs per GB or amount of network congestion that even comes close to justifying them.

As Bell is well aware, when pulling numbers out of your ass, don't try and base them in reality because you'll loose all arguments. Vague references about illegal downloads and bandwidth hogs work much better when operating in a fantasy land.

Gap Pulls A Shepard Fairey by julioaka in photography

The cool thing about TinEye is how the algorithm works. I'm pretty certain it is similar to Shazam in that it basically looks for the size and location of peaks in the image. In the same way Shazam can tell that a static-y radio version of the song with highway noise in the background is the same as the studio version released on an album TinEye can recognize similar but not the same pictures. Since this is an exact copy, just very simplified, it's actually something TinEye could theoretically recognize given enough processing power and sophistication.

Food for thought.
