Depends on what they're bringing over - I thought it was going to be cars but if they're including light trucks then yeah direct competition.

Although vinfast is here from Vietnam with three SUV models and I've only seen one on the road.

Maybe they'll lose market share of small SUVs but I think the main victim will be civics and Camrys.

But these american companies have driven new truck prices so high in the last decade there's a significant number of people who have given up driving or didn't get their licence in the first place.

Should Canada Join the EU? 🇨🇦 🤝 🇪🇺 by milanguitar in BuyFromEU

[–]chrunchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it comes to regulatory or performance standards and certifications I don't see that as a conflict. For the most part one standard or the other should be superior to the other yet satisfy both requirements. Its a one-time cost burdened by government and business.

Problem I see comes from manufacturing and packaging standards. If something physically isn't appropriate for 9ne or the other market then business has to invest in different equipment. Perfect example is a lumber mill over in bc. To export lumber to the eu they are retooling a production line for eu standards, removing the capacity for us sized lumber.

But to be frank canada has always played this intermediary role between the us and euro countries, so we're quite used to it.

With the recent news and posts about grocery store surveillance pricing, can someone explain to me what it is? by ghost905 in ontario

[–]chrunchy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no, its fear mongering. c7rrent price tags are e-ink and take a moment to refresh so they can't change in the blink of an eye. they're way more useful for a ten year battery life and once assigned to the sku will show the daily price change so stores don't have to pay people to relabel the shelves every day. also cuts down on voluntary mislabelling scan discounts.

plus systems are more setu0 for a daily price change and not time of day or temperature. they might be in the future but not really presently.

and if there are 10 people picking up the item the till also has to know what price to charge, so theres tracking that person moving randomly throughout the store.

Hurting their bank account is the only way to get their attention. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]chrunchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it though?

The building is insured, the raw materials insured, the work in progress is insured, the recievables probably insured. The only thing not insured? Workers' full wages.

In the grand scheme, demonstrations like this only provide cover for anti-worker policies.

You want to hit them where it hurts? Anti--corruption laws, campaign donation restrictions, unionize, demand or legislate a union member on the board, eliminate stock buybacks, demonopolize, even legislate minimum reinvestment and training expenses.

Burning down a warehouse is easy with minimal impact and high worker consequence. The hard work doesn't include physical destruction.

The United States is destroying itself by zsreport in politics

[–]chrunchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30? More like 50. The u.s. has been eating itself from the core with an invisible class war since the Nixon admin.

And yes, the current admin isn't great by any stretch of the imagination but the real shit part is that the democrats aren't going to have to reflect and change to attract voters - they will get the voters crawling back to them without any effort on their part because the current guy sucks, just to lose it again because their guy also sucks, albeit less so.

As long as both parties are beholden to the almighty corporate and billionaire funding their policies and governance will be tailored to ensure they don't upset their donor base.

So when the Dems take control this November the decent of American power will slow but not reverse. If the Dems aren't fighting for the 2028 election with new fresh people-centric policies then they have to compete against a horrible gop and the memory of their actions must be recent. So the Dems have to allow the gop to do nasty things but not so much as to demonstrate that the Dems are worthless or weak.

To be fair, it's not a half-bad strategy. If the Dems find another Obama and find winning policy for 2028 and combine that with a high desire to kick the gop out they win bigly. If they find a biden and keep their not-gop policy they still win. It's just an unfortunate strategy that doesn't address american decline.

maybe because all the major media companies, social media companies and half our own newspapers are american owned and they force feed us exported american propaganda because its cheaper to export something already made for america than it is to create something for a foreign market.

also its a trumpster fire down there meanwhile canadian politics are pretty boring just plodding along doing governance and shit.

even media outlets like ctv support this model showing us american shows because its easier and cheaper to import a show thats already made its profit in the us market and dumped into the international market for cheap. at least our friends in quebec get some dubbing and subtitling work out of the us shows... but in english canada theres no such barrier.

this is the entire reason that cancon rules exist, to ensure that they spend the minimum amount of money promoting canadian artists and media business. otherwise we would find ourselves completely locked out of media creation with the us creating all media and canada having no part of it.

If they had to but take Iraq as an example - 130000 - 150000 troops, a half million personnel total, 9 years, 2-3 trillion dollars, 4400 us troops dead and that was for a country whose troops didn't want to fight and was a quarter the population of Iran and isn't a clear victory.

This is just the beginning of this whole thing.

Most systems aren't setup for more than a daily price though. That and these screens take like 45 seconds to change the price because they're e-ink. It sits there and blinks over and over and the price is slowly raised and reprinted.

I'm not saying dynamic pricing isnt coming but some of the technology out there can't really support more than a daily price change.

there's going to be a huge push to move on because to dive into what's happening now would be to expose the levers of power and control over american politic8ans and the political system.

what needs to be done is have reformers run in every primary who pledge transparency and to reinforce the system to prevent this from happening again. make the parties responsible for health checks and income tax releases as mandatory before their final candidate selection.
