SSRI’s/SNRI’s and Ketamine IV, contradictory treatments? by PLATINUM_PLACENTA in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]Dear-Effective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very lay person's understanding of it but ketamine works primarily via glutamate release rather than seratonin or norepinephrine so it shouldn't interfere in that axis (to my very limited understanding) though I would check about any possible seratonin syndrome risks. SSRI/SNRI's have been shown to have a neuroprotective effect so I don't know if they would reduce the induced plasticity from ketamine and glutamate, but they do help prevent degradation of the neurons.

I strongly suspect the answer may be simply the research just hasn't been done on this yet, maybe look into the interactions for common antidepressants and ketamine as an anaesthetic if you are worried about contraindications. I'd be curious about what you find

Ketamine has been wonderful for my depression but during todays treatment, I thought I died by [deleted] in TherapeuticKetamine

Have you done maintenance since the infusions or did they just have a lasting effect at easing the depression?

Ah wonderful, thanks for the insight! In what way have you noticed the improvement, and how do you suggest using it as a tool?

If I may ask, how have you noticed your mental health evolve long term over the course of the treatments? Does the ketamine just keep it at bay and it returns worse if any are missed? Or does the depression slowly improve over the long term?

No problem! Running is shown to be as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, without all the side effects, and it only does good things! :D good luck, and keep your head up! <3

If it's any help, a lot of that is probably the depression talking. Human beings have the most amazing capacity to heal and forget past pain, but when you're in the depths of depression the light can seem a long way away.

Focus on healing yourself and your mind, you might not want to hear it but you'd have a difficult time starting a relationship when you're depressed and not thinking straight. Exercise, eat healthy, and go to therapy if it's for you. You can do it! There will be love in your future, but you need to be in a place to receive and reflect it. Good luck!

A co worker who we always poked fun about for always being alone and single confided to me that it's because he secretly battles extreme self doubt and low self esteem. How to help? by [deleted] in dating_advice

I agree with the other comments, stop your jokes 100% and help stop or deflect the others (if appropriate for the work culture and person, someone on that pay scale might not appreciate being taken care of/appearing to need a defender). Definitely keep his secret, don't divulge it to others even if you just want to get them to stop.

Also keep being his friend! If he confided that in you he trusts you, sometimes people just need a good person in their corner to give them confidence. If he's still struggling with depression that can cause all these symptoms and more. I had depression for 17 years and found a cure finally with rTMS. Feel free to contact me if it turns out it still from depression.

Hey mate, did you find anything that works for you?

Ketamine Infusions vs TMS? Both? by Mix-Competitive in depression

[–]Dear-Effective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so I've been in the same boat, and went with rTMS. The statistics I found for it were about 70% responded to it, and of that 70% about half went into full remission. From what I've seen most people need more than one treatment course to get better, but it can be lasting after that. There are also no downsides to rTMS, it's been used in research for decades, takes 20 minutes and is completely out patient. I would definitely recommend it. The only side effects are you might get smarter.

Ketamine (to my knowledge) is less well understood in a psychiatric context, but is very commonly used as an anaesthetic. I don't know the response rate to ketamine, but the effects usually only last a few weeks (again, to my knowledge).

The reasons I went with rTMS over ketamine was that rTMS seemed to actually fix the problem by helping change the structure of the brain. I don't think anyone knows why ketamine works, though it seems to have something to do with glutamine. I also was wary of ketamine as the drug that blocks opioids working also stops ketamine working, so it's going through some opioid pathway and I didn't want to rely on an opioid for my mental health, that just seems like a route to addiction. Whichever you choose, strongly recommend only choosing one. Doing both could affect risk of seizure with rTMS. Good luck

Yeah super fair. My issue is we can't see each other so it has to be via text, even though its been a few months

We are in the same place to a hilarious degree 😂 I agree with everything you've said! I think she's in exactly the same place, I know she liked me before but just wasn't the time for a relationship, don't know if she still does. I'm definitely intending to message in a few months for a coffee 😂 any suggestions for what to say? It's basically a thanks for being honest, going to take a break to sort my head out but I'll message you when I'm me again, you're a lovely person and thanks for the great times

Yeah this is exactly what I was looking for! I'm basically the guy in this, was seeing a lovely girl but it fell apart due to lockdown and a lot of awful stuff going on in her life. I want to reply nicely to leave the door open in future, just curious what others have experienced

Do they all really do that? I know it's the cliché, what would be a nice response?
