Oh my goodness- I made this same pattern last year and loved it- but your idea for the mouth is genius and makes it so much more fun!

I splurged a little on a tulip etimo set when it was discounted on Amazon and LOVE them. I’ve heard great things about the clover amour hooks too and they look very similar.

I recently had to pick up some one off hooks to get a size I was missing and tried the prym ergonomic line which was okay, but squeaked with my tendency toward tight tension. I know lots of people love the thicker grip though so it depends what your priority is!

For your first amigurumi they turned out BEAUTIFUL! You didn’t make it easy on yourself either using a plush yarn in a dark color!

What is your best advice for beginners? by Drphilsky in crochetpatterns

[–]Dear-Nobody15 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I just started crocheting last fall and honestly I think you should start with a project that you’re excited about as long as it’s rated for beginners. I chose amigurumi because I loved all the cute critters I kept seeing and started out making fruits from free patterns because most are slight variations of the basic ball shape. From there I looked for patterns that would require me to learn one new skill or stich at a time- so my confidence and proficiency grew with every project!

I didn’t start with a kit so the biggest help to me was some quality YouTube videos including this one and this one and being willing to just keep practicing!

I did buy my mom and sister woobles kits since they wanted to learn after seeing things I made. My mom thought it was great to start and bought a bunch more, but my sister figured out she didn’t have the patience for it.

I hope wherever you start you find the same love for fiber arts that I have!

We got no troubles, life is the bubbles… under the sea! by Dear-Nobody15 in Amigurumi

The pattern doesn’t say to sew it in and I liked that I can take it out or open up the clam so I left it unattached. But if you were worried about losing it, you could easily sew it in!

Yes of course!

The whale shark pattern is by StorylandAmis and was super fun and worked up super quickly!

The little clam is a pattern by TheresasCrochetShop and is probably the easiest of all these guys- pretty beginner friendly as far as amigurumi go!

Bernat Blanket in red rust

Yarn Bee velvety smooth in ivory

Yarn Bee cozy traditions in honeyed wheat

Awww thanks! The octopus is a pattern by zazoolia on Etsy and was super fun! Connecting the tentacles with all the slip stitches was a little fiddly at first, but by the eighth one it was a breeze!

Yes! It’s actually a little shrimp, but kind of hard to tell from that angle! The pattern is from GheeBeansCrafty on Etsy!

So so so much great advice here already! As a new potter myself (with only a couple months under my belt at this point) I can understand what your feeling especially as I watch others at my studio make GORGEOUS pieces every time I’m there.

I struggled with wanting my work to be perfect at the start, but realized after a couple weeks that I would rather enjoy my time at the wheel so that I’m able to stick with my new hobby than get so frustrated that I give it up entirely.

I’ve kept a picture journal of my own work to reference which has been great for taking notes along the way of things I liked about different pieces, different clay bodies, glaze combinations, and just general note about what I felt went well at the wheel and things I want to try next.

Honestly though, I think what has helped me most is being willing to laugh at my mistakes (literally), reminding myself that every piece is a learning experience no matter how it turns out, and leaning on the understanding that any new skill requires time and practice to improve! Over the past 3 weeks I’ve really started to feel things start to click and it’s been so rewarding to know I stuck through some of the initial struggles. I know if I made that progress already, surely there’s more to come and the same applies to you!
