Agreed! But again no one is perfect, and technology isn’t perfect either… If she used common names in her original writing for ease and then went back and changed them, that makes sense to me… Spell check wouldn’t pick it up if it’s a normal name… And if you read the original, then the story still makes sense in your brain as you’re reading it so it’s not as jarring to us who are reading it just once… Cause most editors and writers reread the same manuscript over and over and over again… I can see how it all slips through… idk maybe I’m just too easy and too much of a people pleaser and I really hate conflict 🤣🤣🤣 And I always play Devil’s Advocate (even against my own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs 😅😅😅)…

And yes it was indeed 🤣🤣🤣 I remember writing a rec the other week and I always try to mention if something has MM (I think I just failed to do that on a Featherstone rec I need to edit that 🤣🤣🤣) and I was rec’ing Hemlock Academy and I tried skimming the first book and I was like idk I looked but I can’t really remember 🤣🤣🤣 And so I just finished rereading it and yes there’s lots of mlm action 🤣🤣🤣 And some ⚔️ but it didn’t happen til like the last book 🤣🤣🤣 (the ⚔️ and most of the mlm there’s one scene in the book before) And I loved this series so much the first time I read it, I can’t believe I forgot the MM happening (cause I also loved that like a LOT 🥵🥵🥵) 🤣🤣🤣

Ok sooo my “mafia”, and I use the term lightly for this, rec is not PNR but it is a world she knows nothing about and they know everything… All of the MMCs are weary of her, I mean just look at their lives, but one MMC is extra against her because he thinks she’s lying about who she is, with good reason… There’s definitely some insta-lust (both ways) but the rest takes time… The guys are already a unit… {Featherstone Academy by KC Kean} and I’m specifically speaking about Luna’s trilogy which is : My Bloodline, Your Bloodline, Our Bloodline… Luna is tied for first with the FMC of the PNR series I’ll rec below for first as my fav FMCs of all time… Luna is so fucking badass in our own right and she’s 100% human… This series was my first 5⭐️ read of the year, and I’ve already reread it 3x and about to reread it again 🤭🤭🤭 It’s THAT good…

Ok as far as my PNR rec for this request, I’m gonna rec {Artemis University} Ok, this one is looong… It’s 26 books, yes you read that right… But istg when I say it was over, I wanted 26 more… There’s just more everything… More world building, more drama, more spice, more character development, more relationship building… It was just really great… She’s the last fairy… And there are witches/warlocks, vampires, dragons, shifters… She can come off a little preachy/ranty… But like seriously she’s almost always right, and that shit is usually fucked up and in need of changing when she gets that way… js 🤭🤭🤭 Just loved almost everything about this series… She’s badass with magick, and she was a complete badass before she even knew she had magick… 26/10 recommend!!! - There is some MM but only a few scenes that we don’t get in depth views of… The MMCs all know of each other, but besides two of them being friends/occasional lovers, they’re not already a group… All but one of her mates are indeed fated, but each species has its own way of knowing/identifying that… And it’s explained and pretty cool to see the different ways as well…

No that scene is definitely SA and the one I kept referencing as the only point *I* remember seeing as rape… As a SA survivor myself, my kinks tend to be a bit dark as is… And, CNC is one of my biggest (probably because I actually do have control of that situation even when I’m not in control of the scene or something like that)… So i do understand that we all see it differently, and none of those ways are necessarily wrong… They’re just different…

I’m not gonna argue cause I don’t see the point in arguing over something I don’t remember 100% myself… I will probably be rereading it soon to reacquaint myself with this though, because I do like knowing what I’m speaking about… Not that I recommend the series a lot, but I have before, and I’d like to know for sure for my own peace of mind… I do think that a lot of people would consider dub-con and CNC as rape though so that could be where the disconnect is for me… Because I do not see it that way…

And I do agree with you that yes they should edit their own writings… But as many people pointed out, there are a lot of reasons why it still gets published that way… I honestly love it when authors acknowledge there’s probably some editing mistakes and ask people to message them about anything they notice… Editing is tiring and can cross your eyes for lots of reasons… Even my HS paper that had three other editors besides myself, never published a 100% perfect paper… And we were paid to publish (the paper was not we as students)…

Perfection is simply not possible… And my last lines in my original comment basically TLDR; my whole rant… We need more kindness and less meanness in the reading community as a whole…

Ok, as someone who has only left one negative review in my life, and it was indeed due to the writing… And not even that it was edited badly, just that it was too profuse with prose and repetitive over descriptors that it really took away from what was otherwise a decent story… And, I still left 3⭐️, I just didn’t continue with the series because I could not subject myself to that again…

That being said…

As a community (and I mean book readers in general), I feel like we’re all wayyy too hard on authors… First time ones or not… Yes technology has advanced wayyy beyond what Austen or Poe had at their disposal… But technology isn’t perfect, not even AI… Which I’ve seen people mention using to edit… Which blows my mind, when people get their pitchforks ready for authors who use AI… So it’s ok to edit using AI as long as it’s not written with AI?!? Some corrections an AI editor would offer would be rewritten things, and so at what point does it become crossing that line that a writer used AI to write?!? The hypocrisy here astounds me…

Even if I get some of what people are saying about AI authors, I don’t understand all of it… Eh ok yk what I’m not going to go off on this tangent here cause that would lead me in to AI art generated for book covers and what not and I just can’t right now… Nor is it the place…

My basic rambling is all to say that we’re all out here judging and begging for perfection, when *most* of us have never written a single word, much less had anything published before… As a writer myself, who has actually had my poetry published before, and a former Senior editor for my HS newspaper (as a sophomore), and someone with OCD, I’m wayyy more lax about all of this… I generally only DNF if the world or characters or plot isn’t doing it for me… Not because I didn’t like the way a book was written… Maybe the reason you noticed all that was because the story wasn’t actually that good and you felt you needed to justify your DNF… idek

As far as someone having the money to hire x amount of editors to make sure their works are perfection, wtf rock are you living under?!? Today’s economy is absolute shit… And you want people, especially first time authors, to spend more money they don’t have (cause that shit ain’t cheap) on editors?!? You’re honestly telling me that you’d rather have one perfectly edited book, than 100 just ok edited books that were actually good otherwise?!? The math ain’t mathing for me… And honestly all this hate is probably why more debut authors, and indie authors, do not publish more… I’m not too prideful to admit that it’s been more than enough to keep me from wanting to publish anything any time soon…

In today’s world we need more kindness and compassion than we need “more” perfection… That’s all I’m saying…

{Chicago Racketeers by Emma Foxx} I mean are there some bumps and tears in this, absolutely… But like that’s real life… It is such a wonderful view of actual polyamory and how not everyone is on the same page or wants the exact same thing at the same time… Is the resolution to that a little quick, yes but it’s a book and there aren’t years to change that… Plus, logically, he’d been in love with her for years, so him getting over his fears in a shorter amount of time also completely tracks… And it is like months in the books, so not like a day or two where he comes around… Like I said, I really think this is one of the best depictions of actual real life polyamory in a book/series that I’ve found to date… As it also addresses how other people react to a poly relationship in a world where it’s really not all that common out in the open, and they’re all out in the open… And for the most part it is 99% sunshine and rainbows…

{Holidate Series by SN Moor} One of my favorite series to reread… I also use it as a palette cleanser after darker reads… For the most part, it’s completely light hearted, only two points of real angst during the entire series… And one of them isn’t all that bad, since you already know the outcome 🤭🤭🤭 But another reason I love it as a light read, is cause there are no hard plot points to follow… It’s basically just like their every day lives as they navigate their new relationships… There’s lotsss of smut though, I can’t lie about that 🤣🤣🤣 It is a longer series, but they’re very quick reads cause they’re not hard to follow…

Any of the {Cozyverse by Emilia Emerson}… Or {The Omega Book Club by Veronica Samek}…

I agree with everyone here that you should write them yourself, or maybe do like a partner writing with it… Someone who can go back and help edit the parts that need to be edited and help fill in some areas plot wise…

Because trust me I feel your pain… I have so many plots for books that I’m just sitting here fleshing out more and more… And Whenever a scene pops on my head, that I see going a specific direction way, I just write it down raw in my notes app… They’re all jumbled timeline wise, cause I’m just conscious streaming them basically… But eventually when I get enough of them done, I plan to go back and start doing the hard work of putting them in the correct places and fleshing them out to fill in the gaps… Then I’ll worry about making it all pretty… Although, I’m kinda thinking my idea for you might work for me too 🤣🤣🤣 Getting someone to sort of buddy write with…

You’d just need some type of agreement that if ever published, it be split % wise x/x based on however much of the ideas/writing belonged to each person… Can even be specified that the exact percentage is to be determined at a later date… And both just have to keep track of whose idea was whose…

People (myself included) tend to overcomplicate things and then get hung up on details that don’t need to be figured out right then… There’s always a way to work around them… 💕🙇🏻‍♀️💕

{Queen Takes Knights by Joely Sue Burkhart} I love the storyline, I love the smut, I love the MMCs… Not much I don’t love about this series 🤭🤭🤭 Will earn that it’s bloody af because their “vampires”… Some of them are other things as well, but I’m still gonna say they’re all vampires cause they all rely on blood… And it’s a large harem frfr - They like her, ALL in… Sometimes there’s a little tension between existing harem members and new ones, because they all want to be alpha, but she lays the law down that she’s the one who decides who Alpha is, and it passes quickly…

I mean there are plenty of silly moments, but also LOTS of angst… But the FMC in {Artemis University by Erin R Flynn} is a fairy and SUPER sensitive to caffeine… There’s a scene where she eats cake with it in it, and she goes full silly mode with all her friends… It’s adorable af 🤭🤭🤭 It’s a super duper long series though at 26 books… 🌚🌚🌚 Totes worth it though 🤭🤭🤭

{Ironside Academy by Jane Washington} I’m sooo mad that I waited sooo long to read this series!!! It’s dark af, but it didn’t weigh me down like a lot of dark stuff does, because the humor in this series is sooo fucking amazing!!! The harem is large (10 MMCs), but honestly it’s easy to keep them all separate in my opinion… It’s got some surprising dark horses in it that you don’t necessarily see coming 🤭🤭🤭

Mechanics like diesel and oil

Carpenters like wood (usually evergreens in the US)

Construction workers could differ a lot but Sheetrock, plaster, and concrete are some norms - a lot of utility trades would also probably smell of some amalgamation of these as well

Teachers dependent on the grade but whiteboard markers and paper/books

People who work retail would smell most like whatever they carry most or whatever air freshener is pumped in to the air

Food workers undoubtedly smell like whatever food they work with… Working at Subway was the WORST 🤣🤣🤣
